Work less, live longer (and cure CPPS?)

Post by webslave »

(CNN) - Working long hours every week could be bad for your health

Full and part-time employees in the United States work an average of 40-hours a week, according to 2017 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Working more than that has been linked to negative changes to your health, while working fewer hours each week could help make you healthier, according to research from NYU Langone Health.

Four ways a shorter workweek could help improve your health:
  1. Less stress — A study published in the Journal Psychological Medicine in 2011 found that working more than 55-hours per week was associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression among people ages 44 to 66 who were employed full-time. Those who worked less had a lower risk of those symptoms.

  2. Sleep more — A lack of sleep may lead to poor performance, memory and difficulty processing information. Getting the right amount of sleep can improve your health.

  3. Improve your heart health — Working less could lower the risk of coronary heart disease among adults.

  4. Spend more time with loved ones — They can help combat loneliness and encourage a person to engage in leisure activities and exercise.

Sadly Webslave, we as Americans seem to be going backwards. People are expected by their employers to work longer hours, work until they die, and if they don't, they are left to pay an unaffordable amount for Health Insurance if they leave. Who can do that?

But I agree with you. I would leave in a heartbeat and I could in a couple years, but retirees where I work were just hit with a cost of $68,000 a year to continue their health coverage to keep others from retiring. Yes - that was $68,000 a year while the average pensioner earns $40k a year. Yes they can find something cheaper, and that raise was done deliberately to get them off the plan to save the current workers money with their costs. However - even at half the cost, a person with a pension avg $40k can't afford that. So somebody like myself is forced to stay. If I didn't have to worry about other health issues and this shit ailing me with pelvic pain, I would have the confidence to leave, and do something with my life - a job, that I could enjoy.
Age: 52 | Onset Age:49 (but I may have had warning signs 25 yrs earlier)| Symptoms: Pretty much all the usual suspects. Frequency, urgency, inability to always empty, burning and numbing uretheral, penile & perineum pain. Frequent urination at night.| Helped By: Internal PT. Myrbetriq helps but is by no means great. TENS to help sleep, and hand held massages of the lower back, hips and buttocks. Standing and physical labor help. Stretches and hot baths. Occasionally use gel iced pad on the perineum. Worsened By: Sitting (being sedentary), driving, sex, bowel movements, tight clothing and underwear. | Other comments: Currently trying L-Theanine

The problem with this modern world is the managers and bosses that demand that you are online 24/7. That they can always email / text / call you. If you don't, they just keep calling till you answer the phone or your email.

I think this has largely attributed to my condition (together with relationship problems). It gives me a lot of stress. The need to be "on" 24/7. I just want to be offline during evenings and during the weekend. Sad that this is getting much harder the further we go with future technology.

@MrDavid - I'm sure many of us can attribute at least part of the problem to our jobs. I put the brakes on lately at work, because I was putting in a lot of hours the past year, and I could have done more. Believe it or not, work had actually been a blessing for me in some regards. Things got so bad at times that work was the only place I was able to push forward. Home leaves me with entirely too much to think about this shit, and that has been counterproductive to beating this. I am finally in a place where I actually am loving my job and what I do. It's helped keep me from losing my mind.

I don't want to get political, but that is horribly uncivilized. The US is so broken. I retired outside the US because of this. I pay nothing for excellent medical care. I'm retired now, and loving it.

I envy that you were blessed to do that Webslave. That is pretty awesome. My job wasn't very good to me the first 22 yrs. I am in a good place now, but can't appreciate it for what it's worth because the damage is done. I can only move forward and try to fix this. When I do, I'm going to find a more laid back fun loving job until I reach medicare age. These people were promised healthcare for life, albeit it wasn't free. It was enough to bankrupt most people last year, and they just TKO'd everybody for 2019. Yes they can find a cheaper plan on their own, but it's still crazy. It appears that perhaps you keep some sense of personal matters private, but may I ask where you retired to? I may have to retire there - LOL! Or to Costa Rica...

Let's just say I retired to a first world country with single payer universal health care, which means somewhere in Europe, Canada or Australia/NZ. A civilized place.

Americans need to vote to change things. You get the government you deserve.

Can't argue with that statement! Healthcare and good quality access to it is definitely getting worse. Maybe because the whores in Washington, The Insurance Companies, Big Pharma and the ever growing hospital systems that keep swallowing each other up have sold us all out in the name of worshipping the almighty dollar!
