IBS, Quercetin and FIBER

Post by webslave »

I will make a longer post about this in the future, but just a heads up for all those with IBS and other food-related problems: quercetin and fiber may be the answer.

IBS is much more commonly found in CPPS patients than in the general population.

I am a lifelong IBS sufferer, and it's getting worse as I age. Yet recently, when taking any accredited quercetin product on a whim (I had a sample bottle sent to me for photographic purposes and did not want to waste it), I found that it greatly improved (in fact stopped) the diarrhoea and stomach pain that typically accompany the ingestion of certain foods. Note: I have no CPPS symptoms and have not had for over 20 years. At the same time, I increased my soluble fiber intake (Jerusalem artichokes, i.e. inulin).

I've suggested that Quercetin suppliers conducts some open label pilot studies with IBS patients with the help of gastroenterologists, and I suggest that if you have food-related problems that are not fully controlled by a low acid or FODMAP diet, try any accredited quercetin product or any accredited quercetin product and increased soluble fiber in the diet.

I'm going to continue this experiment for a while and write this up at length if the improvement continues.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

Update: basically, my IBS-D is gone, cured, kaput!

I combined the any accredited quercetin product with a diet high in soluble fibre (lots of Jerusalem artichokes, pumpkin and split peas, for example), and now I no longer have to take Quercetin, and the IBS symptoms, for the first time in my life, have completely GONE. It's a miracle, really. I cannot remember the last time I had a problem with IBS.

The any accredited quercetin product helped to calm the bowel by combating inflammation and mast cells, and the high fibre diet changed the microbiome in the gut (the bacteria living there) so that there were less pro-inflammatory bugs and more of the good bugs. There is a lot of research available about gut flora and the microbiome that supports this. I am extremely happy about it and can recommend it to anyone. So the cure for me was Quercetin PLUS a diet high in soluble fibre (or fiber as it's spelled in the US).

Hope this helps someone else.

That's great webslave congratulations! How many years had you suffered with IBS? It's interesting to see pumpkin. When my dog has had diarrhea its recommended to provide a diet of bland chicken AND mix with pumpkin paste. There's something to it that helps with binding as well.
Age: 43 | Onset Age: 43 | Symptoms: burning in tip of penis/urethra has mostly faded; mild pain in right testicle; main pain comes from anterior levator ani spasm | Helped By: hot baths, healing time days after PT, klonopin .25-.5mg, meditation (trying to learn) |Taking: 100mg zoloft (recent onset of tinnitus), Omega-3s, VSL3 Probiotic, Q-Rol, Zyflamend, Chelated Magnesium 500Mg | Worsened By: anxiety, depression, thinking about it too much | Other comments: sitting and pireneal and most penis pain/burning is gone from PT but just developed pain after ejaculation coming from levator; some pain from sitting too long depends on spasm; listening to Jon Kabat Zinn helps; need to de-stress my life; my PT says I'm at rock bottom and it's a long journey so I try to tell myself to be realistic about how long it will take and that this takes time so I try not to let it affect my social life

Many years, almost all my life really. I still can't quite believe it's gone.

The soluble fiber is the key thing. It feeds a different set of intestinal bacteria, the ones you need.

The effect of fiber supplementation on irritable bowel syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dietary fiber in irritable bowel syndrome (Review)

Quote: "Fiber supplementation, particularly psyllium, is both safe and effective in improving IBS symptoms globally. Dietary fiber also has other health benefits, such as lowering blood cholesterol levels, improving glycemic control and body weight management."

Good news that some of the suffering is lowered for you. I think what helps might be the Bromelain inside it, if this helps, some daily intake of Papaya might also help too (based on personal experience)

Note: I buy INULIN by the kilogram off eBay. It's derived from chicory root.

Be careful with psyllium husk (also the chief ingredient in Metamucil), which is quite allergenic.
wikipedia wrote:Health care professionals at geriatric care hospitals, who are frequently exposed to psyllium in the laxatives administered to patients, are commonly IgE sensitized to psyllium (13.8%), and 8.6% have clinical allergy to psyllium. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18564629
