Trigger Points for Tailbone pain

Post by MajorSky1 »

In the past month or so, I somehow developed an ache/pain around the tailbone. It's not quite on the tip of it, but close.
However, when I palpate to see if I can find the pain around the tailbone area, it eludes me.

Just wondering if there is a known TP location for tailbone pain, and if so, where it is.
Age: 49| Onset Age: 47| Symptoms: Pain locations: Intermittent left and right front pelvic floor lateral to urethra; occasionally left side tailbone pain (rarer); left spermatic chord pain (become rare); Post BM-Pain helped by distraction during Bowel Movement.| Current meds: None. Helped by: deep breathing, mediation, hiking, distractions, exercise. Approximately 98% improved, varying depending on stress levels.

Hi Major,

If its pain around the tailbone and (lower) sacrum it might come from tension in the gluteus and spine muscles. I have it. What helps is massaging the spine muscles left and right from the spine from halfway your back down to the sacrum and massaging the triggerpoints in the gluteus muscles (see youtube). I go to a myofascial release therapist 2x a week to release all exterior muscles since the last 2 weeks and it seems to help, but its still early.

If its tailbone only it might be a misaligned tailbone. No TP's for that.. It was the first thing my pelvic PT checked, but is was ok.
Age: 44 | Onset Age: 43 | Symptoms remaining: Irritated left Pudendal nerve, stiff muscles throughout the Pelvis, 80% better then onset | Helped By: Pelvic PT and Myofascial release | Worsened By: things that stress the left PN like sitting| Other comments: 2 weeks Cipro after 2 months, tried Lyrica 150Mg, didn't help at that doses, tried the Randy Peterman cocktail no diff., Quercetin, Magnesium, Ceterizine, Amitriptyline 10mg, Baclofen Cream 5%, PEA; currently no meds. PSA 0.9, Cystoscopy OK, all kinds of blood test, all ok, HIP MRI, Lumbar/sacral MRI ok; Ultrasound, ok, injections with cortisone helped sitting

Hey thanks.
I don't think it's the tailbone itself. Pretty sure it's CPPS muscle related. I sat in a metal folding chair for too long about a month ago, and it just won't heal now. I'll talk to my PT about it on Thursday. I'll check out youtube too, thanks.

So it seems like my pelvic floor tightness has gotten better toward the front, but in a way, the tension seems to have moved toward the back, with tightness in the sphincter/Levator Ani, on both sides, but especially the right, next to the tailbone.

The trigger points there are very uncomfortable when I palpate and stretch them with a finger. The pain takes my breath away and gives me that sick feeling in my stomach.

Should I keep working on these spots until they loosen, or do I leave them alone? I'm just wondering if they're merely stubborn spots or if it's more of an area you shouldn't mess with.

I'm not sure how it sort of sneaked its way back there, but it's causing me constant discomfort. I try to work out the TPs, but they seem to tighten up again within a short time. Does that mean I just need to keep at it?

The quercetin supplement I'm taking has 50mg of magnesium in it, and I take it about twice a day. Is this enough? Or should I go ahead and take a 200mg magnesium supplement too? Would it help?

This particular tailbone area pain seems to have a strong connection with my anxiety as if they feed each other.

I've tried massaging the lower spinal muscles, but it doesn't seem to have an affect.

Keep working the triggerpoints, and 50mg mg 2xday is enough.

Can't really find any definite trigger points. Should I assume this is part of the CPPS? I haven't had this until about 6 weeks ago. The only thing I can think of that may have started it was sitting in the metal folding chair for a couple hours.

I know CPPS pain moves around. It's been going on for some time now, whereas I would think coccydynia would have resolved by now, maybe?
It's just an awful feeling. Really dragging me down, making me feel sick even.

I saw my therapist yesterday, and she checked thoroughly around the tailbone, the glute, and the rotators. She found some TrPs under the glute and worked them out, and it feels a bit better today. She also realigned my sacrum, which was off a little.

Mountainmac,
How is your tailbone pain doing? Have you had progress, and if so, have you or your therapist found any other Trps or spots to palpate to help it?
As I said, my therapist worked on the glutes, and the rotators underneath and it seemed to help the next day, but the pain is back today. I tried working them out with a tennis ball, but it didn't seem to help.
The pain seems to radiate from just below the tailbone, but it's hard to pinpoint the exact spot. Just trying to find a way to resolve this pain. I'm afraid it's not going to heal because it's taking so long to see any improvement.

Hi MajorSky1,

It's better (20/30%) since I started with Myofascial release therapy two weeks ago. Lengthening the muscles etc. Next to that I went to an Ultrasound clinic yesterday, they injected at least 15 places in the Gluteus, Piriformis, Adductor magnus, Rectus ab, and Trochanter area with Cortisone. They said there were some old injuries and/or tp's visible and that the left Piriformis was slightly inflamed.

Ride home was fine, everything sedated for a few hours. Irritated penile feeling was also lower for that period.

Very painful experience, I hate injections... I hope to see some further improvement over the next weeks. Could sit all day today at the office, that was a first in 9 months.Wasn't painless but acceptable.

Thank you, sir, for the update. Glad there is improvement. That's a lot of injections.
I hope I don't need injections. I don't remember ever injuring it.
I'll have to look up which is the prirformis.

This tailbone thing is starting to drive me crazy. It's the right side of the tailbone, and I've been working on trying to find trigger points at the back part of the anal sphincter muscles. It's hard to tell if there are actually trigger points there, but there is some global tightness. Still, not sure if I'm on the right spot or area that's causing the deeper discomfort.
The strange thing is that yesterday it was not really present. But this morning, it started up again.
It does that. It will go virtually away for a day or so, and then reappear in the morning and last for a few days.
Is it correct that this IS part of CPPS? It's definitely an instigator for anxiety and nausea.
Can anybody please help me with this, and give me some clues as to how to resolve it, heal it? It's getting really hard to tolerate.

Hi Majorsky,

Since I cannot sit up straight for longer times due to irritation of the PN nerve and then penile irritation etc. I tend to lean back onto sitting on the upper buttocks. This is the Tailbone area as well, not designed for sitting very well. Also lying down for longer times on a couch stresses this area in my experience.

Perhaps this contributes to the pain in the tailbone area? Is this something you recognize?

Yeah, that's how I sit often, on my bed, laying back. Not sure how to avoid it.
Thing is, sometimes it will be gone for a day.

Is it the pudendal nerve that if irritated causes nausea? It's hard to tell where the nerve is located from the diagrams.
Does it sit right behind the coccyx?
