New sufferer - some advice?

Post by scotsman »

Hi

Around 7 weeks ago, after sex, I passed water and started to get burning sensations and the feeling to pass water again.

This feeling, which was intense but didn't really have any other pain, continued for 4 days - when more pain around my anus and perineum flared up. Couldn't sleep and went to the doctor. Took blood and urine samples and put me on antibiotics, anti-inflam and pain killers. Blood and urine tests came back clear but still had bad pain and the terrible feeling of always needing to urinate.

I didn't have pain urinating (just a slight discomfort), always felt my bladder emptied, and had a good strong stream.

7 weeks later I'm onto my second course of antibiotics (got a reaction to the first batch after 5 weeks) and whilst the symptoms have reduced slightly it's still terrible.

I only masturbate once a week (to clear the tubes) as after I do masturbate the sensation and burning feeling is worse for the rest of the day. I don't have problems or pain getting erections - or have pain when ejaculating.

I'm back to my doctor in a couple weeks - when I guess I'll be referred to a urologist.

Anything I should do? Questions or tests I should ask for?

Now I've had this for 7 weeks and antibiotics don't work - I'm I in this for the long haul?

I'm 33 and in a long term relationship (my wife has been a pillar of support).

Richard,

Welcome to the Discussion Forum.

There are numerous treatment options you can discuss with a urologist, depending on your symptoms and the uro's diagnosis. Read throught the previous posts for a lot of usefull suggestions. Look at the https://ucpps.men for other suggestions.

Also do a search in "antibiotics" on this site for more information. See viewtopic.php?t=941&highlight=antibiotics

Other than the burning sensation after mastubation, what are your current symptoms? What kind of pain-killers and anti-inflammatories are you taking, and do they help any of your symptoms?

That's exactly what happens to me . I went to condoms for sex and started taking care of my prostate and my pain was almost gone . no flare ups . I had unprotected sex with my wife about 3 weeks ago and have been suffering ever since . Follow the protocol on this web site . It helps relieve the pain . And you may have to try protected sex for awhile . It works for me . Try one thing at time and write down what works and what does not work . Read as much as you can on this site so you can ask your uro the right questions . Good Luck .

Thanks for the welcome :)

I'm on Diclofenac 50mg (two a day), Trimethoprim 200mg (two a day) and co-codamol 30/500mg for pain. I don't really feel anything works apart from some relief with the pain killers.

Symptoms are :

increased frequency of urination
urgency in urination (constant needing to go which can get painful)
burning sensation between the legs
pain in the perineum
pain just above the anus
in the early days I had lower back pain and pain down my legs

I'm lucky in that I don't have pain when urinating. I find the constant urgency to urinate the hardest to cope me - takes me ages to get to sleep. Thankfully I don't wake up during the night.

One weird thing is that the moment I wake up in the morning I 'almost' feel symptom free - but it all floods back within the first few minutes of being awake - is this a common feeling?

Yes, when I wake up I feel pretty good until I pee, then my pelvis starts to ache. I always hope that this will be the day when peeing doesn't start the ache cycle but so far it still aches everyday off and on during the day.

It's as if the subconcious manages to tune the feelings out when sleeping

Dear Scotsman

I had exactly what you describe. It started in april of this year. Today I feel much better, mostly thanks to this website and the friendly users here. This might sound strange, but go for skilled relaxation as an initial approach as well as streching. Search this website for more info and look for posts from "JD" in this matter. Also ask "Webslave" for info on what you put in your body and what kid of supplements to take.

Look more on this site, I bet that will help you.

In the meantime, look around and read everything you can. Some great information is contained within this forum.

Scotsman,

It sounds like you have pelvic pain due to muscle spasm, rather than a bacterial infection (your uro may still keep chucking antibiotics at you without fully investigating). You need a full pelvic exam consisting of a manual exam, and a computerised assessment of your pelvic floor muscles - these are both simple and straightforward)

You should read these pages for a start:
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=808&p=3954
http://www.pelvicdysfunction.ca/usd.htm
http://www.pelvicdysfunction.ca/

I know a good physio in Edinburgh who may be able to help. Send me an email, and I'll get back to you.

It is important to get treatment for pelvic pain ASAP to prevent a chronic pain condition from occurring, as this is more difficult to treat.

This is not Medical advice - Consult your Doctor!

Age:39. Age at onset:31. Symptoms prior to treatment: Golf ball in rectum, severe urinary frequency (2-3x/hr; 5-10x/night); weak stream; painful ejaculation; coccygeal pain; tip of penis pain; general pelvic pain on left; testicular pain; supra-pubic pain. Current | Symptoms: Urinary frequency 1x every 2-3 hrs and 1-2 x a night; mild pelvic pain on left hand side (all symptoms still improving!)
Helped by: Trigger point release; avoiding exercise; pelvic floor relaxation; Neurontin decreased bladder sensitivity somewhat. Worsened by: Exercise; frequent ejaculation; ibuprofen irritates bladder. Made no difference: Diet; biofeedback; quercetin; Steroid anti-inflammatories; Elavil.

****UPDATE*** I am now able to sit again at work all day, and can perform moderate aerobic exersise again for the first time in 8 years!!!

scotsman,

I would re-consider the antibiotics. Has you doctor specifically told you that you have a bacterial infection? Or is he merely taking a proactive step? If antibiotics are not helping, I wouldn't take them.

For many of us, chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and even IC comes and goes. Some months are bad, while at other times you forget you have it. Some things that set me off

1. Sex -perhaps from pressure applied to the area above the penis. Especially if the sex is intense.
2. Weather -cold and damp, especially in the fall
3. Beer -although symptoms may appear days after consumption
4. Stress

Look into supplements like Algonot and Quercetin, or just Glucosamine. These help me.

I have been convinced for some time that this is some kind of auto-immune disorder and not related to bacteria. My sister has IC, so the genetic componant is there.

She's doing much better. After going on Vistaril, the condition seemed to clear up. She suffered for about 2 1/2 years.

She found that diet had nothing to do with the condition (for the most part)
and that antibiotics were useless. Invasive medical procedures only made matters worse.
