Quercetin, PGD2, pain and MPB

Post by ppp »

Guys,

I remember when I used to come on this forum everyday 7 years ago, many mentioned that their first symptoms started at the same time as their first symptoms of Male Pattern Baldness (MPB). Of course many lucky folks here are "immune" to MPB, by virtue of genes.

The reason I mention this, is that there is a new "discovery" in the world of MPB that links hair loss to prostaglandin D2 (PGD2):
http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/dermatol ... _Garza.pdf

Then looking up the internet a bit I found that Quercetin inhibits PGD2. This link and others:
http://www.mastcellmaster.com/documents ... h-IJIP.pdf

Of course my usual uneducated guess wanted to make the connection, that somehow an increase in PGD2 should be doing both things.
Is PGD2 something linked to pain in chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome ? Or is Quercetin aimed at inhibiting something else... ? Haven't heard this on this forum so I wonder.

Did those who took Quercetin see a slowing in hair loss :62_58_40:

Thanks

I tried to email Dr Jordan Dimitrakov to get him to comment on this, but his Harvard emails are not working anymore. Does anyone know if he is still in the US?

Interestingly, mice cannot develop allodynia without PGD2

Thanks very much for following up on this.

I think it could be interesting and I am looking forward for any comments. The reason I got slightly excited about this is because not only my onset of symptoms of both chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and MPB happened during the same year (and I remember this was the case for many guys here) but also because times of serious hair shed (which happens 2-3 times a year now) are also the times when I am most susceptible to pain. Now one can say this is stress or coincidence. It could very well be but we know it could be very well be more than that, and I have reasons to believe it is not that simple. Last time I had a flare up I was not particularly stressed, and hair shed followed after a week or so. Also I've been through pretty dreadfully stressful periods while my chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and MPB were kept at bay throughout and after that period.

On a side note, did anyone try quercetin injections locally (in the pelvic area) ? I am wondering because some people say that quercetin is only a weak form of PGD2 inhibitor and thus larger doses locally might be more beneficial. I don't know.

Thanks

I didn't know about this: "PGD2 is a type of prostaglandin, or a hormone-like substance known to be involved in many body functions, including regulating the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle tissue".

So was Quercetin used for the specific objective of inhibiting PGD2 ? (or the association of PFD2 and chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome has never been made..) I am sorry, new to this.

Mast-cell–derived prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) and leukotrienes do induce inflammatory processes. Any accredited quercetin product inhibits mast cell degranulation. We've known that for a long time. So yes, that is one of the specific aims of Quercetin.

So I am seriously thinking of trying Quercetin, as I am more convinced that PGD2 could be at the root of something. I haven't tried it even 7 years into this illness. Things have gotten better with time, but never fully recovered. I was one of those whose sexual life has gotten severely affected by this, at 24. While saw palmetto is only a weak 5-alpha reductase, it worsened my sexual function severely, I was quite sensitive to that. I took it again couple of years later, milder doses, and started feeling the effect again so I stopped.

Bottom line I need to avoid Saw Palmetto, so no any accredited quercetin product for me. Any recommendations of other high-grade quercetin ?
