No I have diverticulitis infection and on antibiotics. I'm laid up on the couch on liquid diet. Haven't been able to exercise for a while.

I'm hoping the shrink will give me some pointers for my anxiety control and obsessive thoughts. But what's getting at me know is the diverticulitis infection. It's truly horrible. Doc said that my swollen and inflamed colon could be causing most of my urinary discomfort and that at some point since I'm so young I would need the offending colon piece removed. Said its been going on a while.

So far the psychologist has been a great help to me in understanding where my anxiety stems from. We are just getting started but doing well.

Another thing. Because I have diverticular disease and IBS supposedly I have been keeping a food diary.

Large proteins give me trouble with digestion. Every time. Also when I go to high fiber I get the bad spasm I'm left side which fires up horrific cramps in left side which I have been taking Levsin (hyoscyamine) for. It has been working.

However I am going to get colonoscopy because of the diverticular disease to assess damage. As my symptoms from my bladder are now 100 percent correlated to my bowel.

Surely I will have more interesting results to share with you all.

Glad to hear that you are making some productive progress, Brett, and especially with the psychologist. When you have the mental front under control, dealing with other things you're facing doesn't seem quite so daunting.

Yeah aint that the truth. Learning new things I never really thought about or dealt with. Doubt it will help control my symptoms 100% but anything that can get me to understand the way I am and how I can better help myself and not freak out, is a good thing.

Well I've been good for a while, working with my therapist and what not to deal with stress an anxiety. I've been making great strides... until the last week or two. After a long process of dying my grandfather finally passed away, and not sure if its caused issues but my IBS/CPPS/bladder pain started around this time.

However, the last couple days have been very bad. So three days ago I decided to try an anti depressant to see if it would help. Lexapro is the one I used. And now I'm fearing permanent side effects from this evil drug.

Yesterday at work for no apparent reason I had a complete and full blown panic attack, I passed out on the floor in a cold sweat, vision went blank, just like you read about. absolutely horrific I tried to call 911 but couldn't function. And what I think brought this on was an obsession over one of the side effects of this medication I'm experiencing. Urinary retention.

I cannot stand that side effect in any medicine, to me its just the worst feeling. and ever since I took those pills it started up. I took a pill Sunday, and Monday, but none Tues or yet today. However the urinary retention is still here today, shouldn't this be out of my system? I'm fearing some kind of permanent damage and its causing horrible panic and anxiety. I never had this kind of panic and anxiety until I took this awful medication. Has anyone experienced something similar? I'm at a loss for words on this. Everything was going fine until I took those dam pills.

Brett,

The retention will pass but the anxiety and panic is also contributing to the muscles clenching and your whole pelvic floor and nerves are likely goosed up. Just my laymen opinion...Panic attacks are terrible. I have had many in my life...The OCD you clearly exhibit over the many posts of yours I have read needs to be addressed here. Break the vicious cycle by talking to a doctor to get a script for benzos to take carefully to calm you. It will all pass but the cognitive work needs to step up big time!!!!

BTW...Had you not read the side effects, I doubt you would be in this situation. You freaked yourself out. Been there done that!!

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

The funniest thing is that the anti depressant has magnified my anxiety. I had it all under control going on 2 months working with my therapist. But that panic attack and retention was unreal. I still having trouble getting over what happened to me. Just shocking. How long you think the side effects will last I read clearance was 5-6 days so I'm assuming that.

SSRIs are all different. You should drop this one and try another.

Think I'm done with ssri's I was doing very well without them this last two months. I thought they would help with my bowel issues and general sadness about my gramps but nope. Just going to push through and hopefully these symptoms go away and continue to work on my stress reduction. This was like 2steps back. Just hard to deal with these symptoms. I'm able to pee but damn it does not want to come out all the way. I had a bad trip with Zoloft too. Felt like I smoked pot .. Got the same anxiety.

I couldn't believe the half life was 30 hours. That means its effects stick around a while. So well see what happens. I figure by the end of the weekend the retention will have improved.

My question is this...Maybe I missed something? If you were doing well, why did you start taking SSRI's? Was it due to your loss of your grandfather? My feeling is we sometimes need to just grieve and feel sad when we loose a loved one...That's part of life. So if the sadness you were feeling, which is normal, made you decide to take the medication, I think that could of been a hasty decision...

Hang in there!

I read it could help with ibs so I tried it since my ibs was getting worse. That's the initial reasoning behind it. I'm just fearing permanent damage at this point. Doesn't seem likely but the fact the side effect is still there leads evidence that I created a ling term issue. Very disheartening to have difficulty pissing. I don't feel pain anymore just inability to go on command unless I seriously have to piss. Feels pathetic. Hope I diddnt wind my anxiety up... But there is no question tgat right after first dose the hesitancy started and I thought that was only possible on trycyclics which is why we went for this one.
