Bentyl ( Dicyclomine )

Post by skypro »

Has anyone tried this medication? My GP prescribed it to me today as an "experiment". I did some research and it seems to work for IBS - which isn't a problem for me. He wants to see if this will relax my anal tension. It isn't too bad recently. It varies from a 0-2 throughout the day.

This blurb below concerns me as I do Bikram yoga 2-3 times a week. That is yoga in room with a temp of 105 and 40% humidity for 90 minutes.

This medication may make you sweat less which can increase your risk for heat stroke, a very serious condition. Avoid activities that might cause you to overheat (such as doing strenuous work/exercise in hot weather, using hot tubs).

Thanks in advance!

I have taken Levsin which is more or less the same type of medication (anticholinergic) but it works faster. It did not really work for my rectal tension but its worth a shot. It does quiet the GI tract but also can work to quiet the pelvic floor. I only took it once because it made my urinary retention worse, but I have a weak bladder to begin with. Tricyclic antidepressants also have some anticholinergic properties. Let us know if you have any luck.
Age: 31. Onset Age: 30. Symptoms: Severe rectal pain and voiding dysfunction, pelvic pain, urinary urgency and retention, low back pain. Symptoms started after a cervical spinal cord injury but have progressively worsened over time. I believe that some of my symptoms are not entirely from nerve damage but a result of chronic tensing/stress from my injury. Meds Gabapentin 1200mg, Flomax, Valium, Effexor, Oxycodone, Baclofen (just starting), laxitives.

I didn't fill it yet, but I spoke to the pharmacist. She said no issues with my hot yoga. Yeah, easy for her to say... :P

I will give ya'll an update in a couple of weeks.

Update - I have been taking this for a few weeks now. I am not the most consistent with it but overall it seems to help me relax my pelvic area. I notice my clenching is reduced for a few hours and it lifts my mood a little bit as well.

I will keep it up and check back in a few more weeks.
