Rectal Valium Suppository or Gel-Muscle Relaxant

The women on the IC network site are using vaginal valium suppositories and are having success. There was small study done on it. I am going to try a rectal valium suppository, and some rectal valium gel, to relax my pelvic muscles. I think doing putting it in the rectum will reach the pelvic floor muscles better. The pharmacist, Kevin, at http://www.dakotarx.com faxed the prescription request to my doctor and the my doctor signed it and faxed it back. Then they will send them to me in the mail. You can choose u.s. mail or fed ex. Some insurances will pay, even if you are out of state, but mine will not. I pay for myself, symptom relief is well worth it. The pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy, is in North Dakota but you do not have to live in North Dakota to get a prescription filled from there - I don't.

It is best if you call and talk to Kevin first and figure out what you want him to fax to your doctor. And, then you have to call your doctor to let them know that Kevin will be sending over a request that you asked him to. Then you have to call Dakota Pharmacy back and tell them you called to let your Doctor know and he will send your Doctor the fax. This is all because if Kevin just sent over the request without you being involved it would be him "initiating therapy" and he cannot do that. Or, you can just go to your doctor and ask him to write you a prescription for what you decided on with Kevin and go see your doctor and have him write a script and then have the front desk fax to the pharmacy.

With your doctor's prescription, this type of suppository can also be made at a compounding pharmacy. It would be worthwhile to see whether you have this resource nearby, rather than going through the trouble of doing it long distance.

I can offer no remarks as to the efficacy of using Valium in this way, as I've only taken it orally in the past.

The pharmacy I was referring to is a compounding pharmacy. And, all compounding pharmacies are different, I have gotten compouded prescriptions from a local pharmacy and Dakota Pharmacy. Pharmacies use different drug delivery ingredients, some use preservatives and coloring (which is bad), some suppositories are made much bigger than others (you want them to be as small as possible so they do not leak out)....It is not regulated and standardized.

Also, you want them from a pharmacist with a lot of experience making them for patients with our condition because it is often trial and error to get the right dose for you since we are all unique. The pharmacist I mentioned has lots of experience with pelvic pain patients. So, in the long run, it can be worth it to go the long distance route and it really is not much trouble, you don't have to drive to the pharmacy to pick it up.

I am not saying where I go is the only place that is good, surely there are others, I just do not know of any.

About my post. I can understand your point, and I am sorry it came across as advertising. But, I do disagree with you that in this case - there is a need to recommend a business and benzo compounded supps are very unique and can be hard to obtain.

I was a patient of Dr. Brookoff's since 5/98 until he quit practising about a few years ago now (you should delete him from your doctor list, he is not practising as far as I know). He called me after I first started seeing him and asked me where I was getting my compounded prescriptions because he wanted to send his patients there, then at one appt. he called the pharmacist "my guy". He later found used a local one, and since I was right by it I got them and I had a bad experience with the supps and a staff person there.

I have read bad things people have posted at other forums about their supps. so I was trying to spare someone else. Some compounders use ketamine (it is for nerve pain) and that can CAUSE IC and this guy knows that. Some use it suprapubically (which my pharmacist disagrees) and I would hate for someone to have it combined with their valium supp like other things some docs are adding to the supps.

I had two bad experiences with compounding pharmacies. So, yes, I am totally "advertising" this place. I do not get anything from the pharmacy for posting, the pharmacist does not even read the boards, he is way too busy. In one way it has been bad for me since now when I call I have to wait over a half hour on hold just to place my order because he is so busy. But in another way, I gain from his wisdom from treating so many patients, we all do.

Does anyone know if taking valium or a benzo like Ativan via suppository might reduce symptoms that appear when you take them orally? I can see how the drug might more directly hit the pelvic floor muscles via this route, but I'm wondering about how systemic the absorption is. Any thoughts appreciated.

I have same question as critthinker. I often wonder about something that could be applied or even injected directly into the pelvic area to bring relief without the side effects of medications orally. Does anyone have experience with valium as a gel inserted into the rectum?

I talked to a urologist about this last week. He said it would likely have less side effects but would not eliminate them entirely. I think something like this might also be different for different people.

This is an interesting thread. In the past I have not done this in a good while now but I used to when things got really bad. I would insert a regular type of suppository in the rectum because I would find that it helped relieve the tightness down in the pelvis I was having. No-one told me to do this and I did not read it any where, I just kind of came up with it and I told my PT at the time about it and she said it is ok but don't do it as a regular thing because it could make the rectum muscles weak.

But this valium suppository kind of ties into a conversation I had with a pharmacist one time when I was asking him about why I was using these suppository and he said there are ones that have narcotics built into them to help relieve pain I don't know if he meant valium or some other drug because I did not push him further with it, I wish I would have. But he did warn me that you have to be careful using these types because there is a chance of addiction with them.

Being that this is Valium and that it can be addictive. How addictive can the valium suppository be less addictive, more addictive, or about the same as the oral valium

I would definitely be cautious about the use of suppositories since it's possible it may be as addictive as the oral version. However, I have no firsthand experience with this. I have noticed that 5 mg of Valium isn't enough to affect me, but that 10 mg basically knocks me out. I'm hoping to try out 10 mg of the suppository version to see if the effect on sleepiness will be lower. Here's an interesting study on the use of vaginal valium suppositories:

Just wanted to let everyone know. I got off the phone with Kevin a few hours ago and he was VERY helpful. I would recommend calling him if you're interested in suppositories to see if this might help you. He gave me the impression that it's a very trial and error-oriented process, and that's okay with me.

I'm about to begin using a diazepam suppository as the oral version has not given me tremendous benefit. My PT thinks that applying the suppository closer to my levator-ani trigger points could be of significant help.
