Gelco GSeat review

Post by webslave »

A local store gave me a product to review, called the Gelco GSeat made by gelcoproducts.com, which is an elastomer seat pad with a perineum-saving gap. We have it for sale here (thinner, cheaper version) or here (thicker, more expensive version)

First impression is the smell, a strong chemical smell that means it is banished to the shed for a week or two. It seems comfortable and very durable, with no pressure at all on the perineum, but until that smell outgasses, it's not staying indoors.

It's also got a carry handle in the middle, so it can be folded and carried around like a small briefcase.

I can't beat my donut cushion that is covered with a tartan cloth that makes it look like a flat cushion. I drive to work with it and carry it in a little bag to the office. People think I just want a soft chair. It buys me hours sitting down.
CPP since 2005. Prior to CPP always overly fit and active. I am female. Had two natural births: singleton 1998 and twins 2000. 2002 emergency back surgery - L5S1 herniation. Then recurring UTIs. Usual antibiotic overload. Then constant debilitating burning bladder and reaction to many foods. Australian Pain Clinic 2007. Turning point was Dec 2009 Attended Wise Clinic in Santa Rosa USA.
Was helped by strict diet but now eating normally after years of restricted diet - wonderful. Helped by: stretching, relaxation, yoga, trigger point, warm baths. Worsened by: stress, sitting, abdominal or glute exercises and salicylates
Medication: Now off all pain clinic meds no more Endone or Elavil only Lyrica 50 mg as Dec 2010 just reherniated L5S1disc and had discectomy. Its taken years but I feel I am over it.

I've now started using this product, and despite my initial misgivings, I have to give it 2 thumbs up. :icon14: :icon14:

PROS:
  • There is no pressure on the perineum at all.
  • It folds up small.
  • It can easily be moved around and looks cool and sporty. It has a built-in handle for carrying.
  • It is made of an amazing softish rubber that will never lose its spring the way foam does.
CONS:
  • Terrible chemical smell when new. I left it outside in the shed for a while, and the smell went down 90% and is now not noticeable.
Note: I have the "Ultra" version. There is a cheaper version too.

From the manufacturer:
Gseat Ultra The Gseat Ultra is an ergonomic gel seat cushion that effectively relieves pressure and improves your level of comfort when sitting for long periods of time. Designed for individuals who may be seated in excess of 12 hours a day, this unique gel pad is constructed from a premium visco-elastic gel and features a center relieved groove that address the point of contact. This helps eliminate soft tissue pressure and suspends the tailbone (coccyx), which eliminates direct pressure on the spine. The visco-elastic gel used in the Gseat Ultra is special because it maintains its shape and cushioning properties better than most polymers or foams, and will not break down over time. Along with the pressure concentrated gel, the larger dimensions of the Gseat Ultra accommodate the seat pan of most wheelchair and motorized scooters, and helps relive back pain and stiffness in the lower legs. It also features an integrated handle and foldable design that make it extremely portable and ideal for use at work, during traveling, or while attending school or sporting events. Does anyone have a link to a cushion that DOESN'T have a perineum hole but that IS super soft? I've tried the TheraSeat and one of the cushions in the Amazon store, but the problem I have seems to be that I can't sit on anything hard. For ex. it's easy to sit on a soft couch or a mattress, but hurts to sit on a dining table chair.

Just buy a piece of softer foam from a rubber dealer and make your own hole. That's enough for home use anyway.
