Accutane a Cause?
I've used opiates, accutane, and steroids.. At one point, I used all three at one for a couple weeks, and this was exactly when this whole thing started.....
Age 21.. | Symptoms: Extreme discomfort in bladder, and lower abdomen.. To the point that I can't sit still, and sleep, can't do anything.. The only that will help is getting into the bath... Urinary frequency, Urinary hesitancy, sometimes taking a few minutes to get just a little bit out.. Sometimes lower back pain when I lay down at night.. Never have the golf ball feeling everybody talks about, and never have a problem sitting down.. Helps: Hot baths, Xanax (but makes me extremely tired), stretching (it seems like only sometimes), pain killers (ex: Percocet, but if I take them, they end up making me worse the next days following, probably due to the urinary retention they cause).. Makes worse: Stress is the main main thing, caffeine and spicy foods too, but not really a whole whole lot.. only a moderate amount..

accutane? Hmm...that's interesting. You know...I was on that drug when I had my first episode of this when I was 17. I started taking that around November of 1999 for some teenage related acne and had my first bout with prostatitis-like symptoms in February of 2000, which didn't get better until that summer. It worked quite well for acne but it had some nasty side effects. Has anyone ever thought that this problem we all here have might have something to do with all the medications our pill loving society takes all the time?
Age:23 | Onset Age:22 | Symptoms:Urinary hesitancy, moderate frequency, urgency and retention, slight perinneum, rectal and leg pain, frequent abdominal/bladder pain. Red/white spotty irritation on penis | Helped By:hot baths or showers, walking and moving around, pain medications | Worsened By: sitting for a long time, holding urine too long. I'd say I'm about 75% better naturally so far.

Re: Accutane a Cause?
Of course, one can never be sure, but I doubt Accutane played a significant role in your developing CPPS. Over the years, I have read almost no reports of sufferers' conditions starting or symptoms being exacerbated by that particular med. Interesting idea though.BG0013 wrote:I've used opiates, accutane, and steroids.. At one point, I used all three at one for a couple weeks, and this was exactly when this whole thing started.....

Thanks for the replies.. When I went on the accutane, the dermatologist office made me read a 14 page book on the side effects, and than sign that I understood they were possible.. In these is: IBS, IBD, urinary fluid retention, frequent urination, liver problems, Crohn's disease, depression resulting in attempting suicide, committing suicide, etc etc.. Its is a very hard drug on the body.. While on that, I know I developed chronic constipation, but thought it would just go away.. I'm thinking that when your constipated, especially all of the time, that you tend to tense your muscles, no mater who you are.. Maybe that is what brought this out of me (although I probably was already prone to it due to weak pelvic muscles or for whatever reason). I don't know, and I know I shouldn't worry about what caused it, but instead worry about how to help it, but I would feel so much better if I could figure it out, I guess we are would.. Thanks..

BG,
I'm not sure what type of steroids you are talking about but if they were oral anabolic steroids, I don't recommend you ever take those with Accutane again. Both are EXTREMELY hard on the liver.
When I developed my issues I had just taken ephedra and an over the counter designer steroid. I say that because it was legal (1-test), but I gained about 14lbs in 5 weeks on the stuff, so you can't tell me it wasn't potent.
My point is, I think introducing chemicals into our bodies only set the thing in motion. It was there all along. For me I had experienced spasms and shooting pains in my pelvic floor about 2 years prior to taking these substances. So I think my pelvic musculature was getting knotted and stressed way before. My symptoms started with what seemed like an inflamed prostate. It took 5 months of destroying my GI with antibiotics and tensing my levator ani to hold in incredibly bad gas for the full blown tightness and urinary problems I experience(d) to occur. Just a really bad set of circumstances that occurred one leading to a worse effect.
Would it have shown itself then and there, maybe not, but at some point probably would have. I try not to beat myself up over it, but I do sometimes.
For me doing stretches, taking warm baths, doing mild internal TPT on myself, and using .5 of Ativan sparingly has help remarkably. But, I'm still not normal, and deal with this thing on a daily basis. I still can't go back to the hobby I love, so until I can, I am not healed in my opinion.
Good luck!

THat is a long list of side-effects.
Just for the record, me and my twin brother have chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome (neither of us have any bad pain these days) and neither of us have used accutane.
So if it is a contributing factor, its not causally necessary.
If you ask me, the predominant factor in common is a need to perfect one's body and image, and other things in general. High achiever with significant self drive through anxiety, etc, etc...

This is not medical advice, and I am NOT a doctor of medicine or a related field.
* Age:33 Onset: February 2004.
* 99.9% IMPROVEMENT in 2.5 Years with the first year being the really hard part
* Current Symptoms: Mild irritation of perineal muscles on occasion. Relieved for days at a time by a specific stretch (see below).
* Initial Symptoms: Terrible penile, urethral, rectal, and perineal burning/aching with addition afferent sensations.
* Current Treatments: Deep stretching of the legs and pelvis. Most effective: Deep psoas and levitar ani stretch using the first phase of the "pigeon pose" from Yoga. When a deep pulling is felt in the middle of the pelvis next to the upper rectum, symptoms are completely alleviated for several days.
* Past Treatments Hyperprotection of the perineum for 1.7 years, Walking, Rectal biofeedback, Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, Conditioned deep relaxation practice, Men's Multi-Vitamin and an Extra B-complex pill, all seemed to help.

Me too! I have to say that my largest source of motivation from the time I was 6 years old was fear of failure.scoobysnacks wrote:Man that about describes me to a T. Damnit!LightningTree wrote:THat is a long list of side-effects.

No, I didn't take oral.. I was on finaplix though, which is a very strong steroid.. I was also on test enanthate, and EQ.. The ephedra thing reminds me.. While on the juice, I was also drinking about 3-4 speed stack energy drinks per day.. These had a lot of ephedra in them, and were MUCH more potent than any stacker 2 or xenadrine I've ever taken.. Sometimes I'd drink two back to back (which I know how stupid it was now, but I had no respect for my body).. I was truly living like an idiot, and like I had nothing to lose, even through I had everything.. I guess now I'm paying for it.. Today if I drink one of those energy drinks it will make me piss 8 times an hour, not even exaggerating.. That also probably helped cause this..

Also, some nights I would be going to the club, and Id eat a few pain killers and drink one of those drinks, this way I felt real good but also had a lot of energy, than I would drink A LOT (around 6 beers min, and a bunch of shots) while in the club.. All while I was on juice.. When I was on the juice I felt invisible, that was probably a lot of the problem.. When I was on the accutane, I actually didn't do any juice, I did it right right after I was taken off the accutane.. When I was on the accutane, alls I did was drink a couple of times a week at the most.. Accutane was the one thing that scared me because I actually felt very depressed while on it..l

Re: Accutane a Cause?
Interesting - I've been wondering if Accutane had something to do with this as well - I was on it for about 9 months in my teens...of course it is just one possible cause in a complex network of things including that highly overachieving attitude to life that in the end did me in :)
Age:29 | Onset Age:29 | Symptoms: ORIGINALLY - rectal pain, penis tip pain, perineal spasms, golf ball feeling in perineum, painful ejacualation ONGOING - rectal pain, penis tip hypersensitivity, urethral pain at beginning of urination, ejaculatory pain, burning skin around legs and buttox | Helped By: warm baths, NO catastrophic thinking, Physical Therapy; Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol; Mirtazipine (Remeron) for anxiety and sleep, dry needling of TPs (NOT injections), PAIN PSYCHOLOGIST (CBT and Commitment and Acceptance Therapy), diet changes - so far eggs are out doing an elimination diet now :) | Worsened By: ANXIETY, FEAR, STRESS, CATASTROPHIC THINKING,heavy weight lifting , sitting too long

Re: Accutane a Cause?
I was on Accutane for over a year during my late teens. It hit me pretty hard. Side effects like aching muscles/joints, muscles over the head tensing like crazy, making it feel like I'd fall through the pillow every night when I laid my head down, headaches, extreme skin dryness and nightmares every single night had their mental hits, which in turn exaggerated the effects and found others, or so it seems now. While I did have aching loins/thighs often then, and even quite painful testicle ache once or twice, I never had any urinal issues, nor any other pelvic pain, so I don't think that <rat poison> caused my current chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome symptoms.
Age: 27 | Onset Age:25.5 | Symptoms: Intermittent: nocturia, hesitancy, ache in testicles, thighs, perineum, back. Shooting pain in lower abdomen. When sitting: tense/taut feeling in buttocks, underside of thighs.
Occasional dribbling. Occasional sharp pain in bladder area when bladder has been rather full for a while.
Constant: Somewhat increased frequency. Weak urine stream(less than 50%, change was sudden). Ever present, mostly not variable. Helped by: Not thinking about it. Made worse by: Drinking a lot of anything and then going to sleep (sometimes), sitting (muscle tightness) (sometimes)

Re: Accutane a Cause?
I must agree with the medication causing the condition to begin with. I know I had taken small doses of propecia for 8 months prior to this thing starting. Then bam it hit me one day with extreme pain in the prostate and swelling. I then took a few antibiotics including cipiro and this seemed to change my symptoms and bring on much of my other issues. This has gone away over the years and the pain has been manageable. I have a few stubborn trigger points but I'm working those out as best I can currently.
Age: 33 | Onset Age: 28
Flare | Symptoms: burning after urination/defecation, post-urinary dribbling, low libido, low arousal, pelvic aches and pains.
Helped By: Physical therapy of the levator ani muscle group, Relaxation, Diet
Worsened By: Eating refined sugar and gluten, coffee, beer, stress

Re: Accutane a Cause?
Hey everybody.. Its been a while since I've posted, I was just browsing and started looking at my old posts. Overall, I made improvements, but am still far from "cured," or even better. I still deal with some pain and lots of uncomfort on a day to day basis. As far as this post, I figured I'd let all of you who took accutane know that they took it off the market, and that there is currently a lawsuit against the makers, for it causing IBS, IBD, Crohns, UC, etc. I figured since most of us also suffer from IBS or IBD also, I'd let you all know. Just google accutane lawsuits and the a lot of the firms involved will come up.

Re: Accutane a Cause?
Intresting post! I have also been prescribed Roaccutan (Accutane) against acne in my teens.
How long from that you took Accutane did your chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome symptoms come?
One funny thing about my acne is that it have never been as good as now. Nearly no acne at all, just some few rash. I think from excluding wheat and beeing on non inflammatory diet plus taking Quercetin helped a lot.
