I know that you will most lilkely delete this post, but I am seeking advice/answer for if this doctor treating IC with antis is a quack. Can anyone provide me with info on this? Also if you read the forums at icsucessonline a lot of people seem to have been helped by the "right" antis. I myself dont really believe in antis for IC, but I am willing to do whatever to get this thing under control.

I don't think Dr. F. is a scam. He uses a broth culture to search for bacteria in urine samples, that do not normally show up in the normal doctor's office test.

Currently, there is an IC research study going on, administered by the Virginia Commonwealth University, that is trying to validate his testing techniques. The study is called the STAR project.

I've had very extensive tests, broth included, to rule out bacteria. No bacteria involved for me. But I'm sure it'd prove very lucrative for certain people if a new bacteria theory could emerge...

PCR techniques make Mr Fugazzotto's protocol look antiquated. And PCR has discounted bacteria as significant in CPPS. I think Fugazzotto's approach is therefore entirely pointless and wrong-headed.

I'd like to add that he was educated before 1950 and retired over 22 years ago. To take his advice on medical issues is just absurd, considering all the medical advances that have happened since then.

I notice they are asking for money to be sent to them, not to Virginia Commonwealth University. Nor do they name the people at VCU are who are supposedly leading this "study". :thumbs_down:

I tested negative for bacteria with Dr. F. about a year ago. Although a true caring gentleman, he is quite elderly (I think he is pushing 90) and his specimen gathering procedures left me with some questions.

Regarding the STAR project study, I am a participant. I am dealing directly with VCU. I am participating primarily because part of the study is "to isolate DNA followed by a PCR test specifically designed to identify specific bacteria" (their words). The other part of the study is to test for bacteria via broth culturing (I presume following Dr. F's protocol).

They specifically state that there is no cost to me. If Benton's and Michelli's websites are asking for money, it must be for something besides the study.

Thanks for the data. I see no point in the study they are conducting at VCU. They are traversing issues already covered numerous times elsewhere.

The person you mention is not a medical doctor. I will not comment on this post (for legal reasons), except to say that I think you are going in the wrong direction. The vast majority of IC researchers feel that interstitial cystitis is NOT a bacterial infection of the bladder.
