Currently reading David Wise's new book on Anxiety

Post by carld »

So far, I think his book is truly excellent and should be part of our protocol...

Note: That I do not get any type of compensation from this website or from Dr. Wise...I'm only here to help!

There's nothing ground breaking or earth shattering here...but the way it is written and it's repetitive narrative on important aspects on relaxation is great for someone like me who can become distracted so easily...

The most important thing I have confirmed in this text so far is something I have said many times in the past in this forum...The accepting of your condition and the fact that if you try hard to rid your self of it by fighting it...it only makes it worse. The road to recovery first starts with not fighting...but letting go that you have this condition, so that you can create the environment to begin healing and easing your anxiety...

Remarkable book from a remarkable man!!!

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Does the book explain the actual practice of Paradoxical Relaxation sufficiently, so that someone who cannot visit the Clinic, can start practicing the Relaxation routine daily on his own?

I hope they would also release the Paradoxical Relaxation tapes/Cds to the general public, as well as write a more detailed book about Internal (Self-)Release.
Age: 26 | Onset Age: 16 (but got much worse around 22) | Symptoms: hard, cold flaccid penis; reduced sensation/numbness; diminished erections; premature ejaculation; urinary frequency; burning urination; urgency (bladder and urethea inflammation); painful ejaculation | Helped By: Exercise, cold shower, internal massage, massage of inner tights, abstinence, stretching | Worsened By: sex/masturbation; working on the computer too long | Other comments: I am always worrying it is nerve-related and cannot heal naturally.

Once I complete the book...I will report that...Either way, I strongly support either paradoxical relaxation and or autogenic relaxation. So far for me autogenic relaxation worked for me because it takes less practice and effort. Which is why I believe in the long run, paradoxical is the way to go for many of us...

The style that the book was written is very repetitive in explanation which for me is GREAT! Dr. Wise explains why he chose that route...I think he nailed it by doing so...

About 80% through it - it's excellent...Particularly enjoyed the chapter on attention training - "Attention is the joystick of the nervous system."

My over all opinion on this book is very positive...It describes how to attempt Paradoxical relaxation through-out the book and how anxiety can cause so many ailments in humans... Make no mistake...It's not an easy just lay down get quiet in your head and do it...It takes a great deal of effort...What intrigues me the most is the comment..."Rest with tension" That is a very profound paradox in progressive relaxation.

When I relax and drop my jaw and go to the place in my body and focus on sensation and what ever thoughts come in...comes in...I don't fight those thoughts, I just carry on and re-establish focus on sensation. This is the jewel of the book in my opinion.

Got to agree profusely on this. In fact, my GP traces many medical conditions back to anxiety and treats it accordingly. Unfortunately, the world is going in a direction that actually promotes anxiety by not giving people enough time to relax.
Age: 49 | Onset Age: 36 Initial | Symptoms: Pain in perineum and rectum, urinary symptoms (esp. frequency). Current | Symptoms: Pain in perineum/rectum when sitting, burning in feet. | Helped By: sleep, yoga type stretches, relaxing, walking, yard work!, jogging, positive thinking, changing life outlook. No help: antibiotics, alpha blockers | Worsened By: Sitting too long, diet: unidentified food triggers, obsessing over it.
