Tizanidine

Post by budgie »

Hi all

I thought I'd let you know that as well as the Neurontin and Tramadol which i've been on for over 2 years, I have recently started Tizanidine at 4mg per day and then up to 12 mg if I need it. It is to relax the pelvic floor muscles. This new drug is excellent and has helped my pain no end to the point where I can travel all day with little or no pain. Yes, NO pain!!

Worth checking out with your pain specialist!

Tizanidine (tye ZA ni dine)
Brand Name: Zanaflex

Why is this medication prescribed?

Zanaflex, with it's key ingredient Tizanidine, a muscle relaxant, is used to help relax certain muscles in your body. It relieves the spasms and increased muscle tone caused by medical problems such as multiple sclerosis or spinal injury.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

Budgie,

Out of interest, did you or do you experience any side effects from Neurontin?

I did have a little tiredness at the beginning but now it is no problem. I'm currently on the maximum dose of 2700mg per day!! This was originally prescribed to reduce the nerve pain in my right leg and also in the urethra. It is a very good drug and helps me a lot.
If you take it it is recommended to start on a low dose, say 100mg then after a day increase to 200mg etc etc. to reduce any tiredness effects.

I now take 900 mg at midday and 1800mg at night.

The Tizanidine on the other hand does make me very tired though!

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Budgie. That doesn't sound too bad. Like all of us, I'm very interested in the treatments for nerve related pain. I'd heard some bad things about Neurontin from a female-oriented IC forum though, some of them had problems with it slowing down thought processes and the like. It seems to have a lot of supporters from this forum however, so I'm sure side effects like that are rare.

I myself am going to try Milgamma for nerve related pain initially, but Neurontin is always an option.

I tried this medication a couple of years ago, but I couldn't tolerate it; it knocked me out. I'm glad to hear you've found a regimen that is helping you though. :-D

It does get a little easier the longer you take Tizanidine but it still makes me very tired even now. I had to increase the dosage very gradually I must admit.
