Lidoderm Patches

Post by Jay »

Hi guys,

I, like some of you here, occasionally suffer from painful skin (allodynia) associated with my CPPS. Depending upon where it's located, this can be a very troublesome symptom. For instance, I've had it on my lower buttocks, such that it made laying down bothersome!

My pain management doctor suggested that I try Lidoderm patches, and they do seem to help me out quite a bit! They're basically big patches with a sticky side. You can cut them up into whatever shapes you need before removing the covering on the adhesive. Once they're on your skin, they release lidocaine (a numbing agent) over a gradual period.

You're allowed to wear the patches twelve hours at a time, with twelve hour breaks between. I've been able to wear them for that entire period, even while sleeping, so the adhesive will definitely make them last. They seem to do well wherever they're applied, but I don't suggest the genitalia. That glue is really quite sticky.

So far as I've been able to tell, the side effects are mostly quite benign, and the patches are non-habit forming. However, I've heard they're quite expensive for a 30-patch supply (in the area of $150-$170), but insurance often does cover them. So, it's a thought for you to try, if you have skin pain!

Cigna PPO covers these, not sure about other insurance plans. Dr. Weiss gave them to me for quieting my pelvic nerves, but they didn't seem to help much. Do you know if they have much use for non-skin issues?

They seem to help me to some degree. I actually put them on the lower sacrum, around where the nerves emerge from the spine, and that seems to be beneficial. The sacrum is also where quite a few pelvic muscles anchor, and I've had issues in that realm, so that may play a factor.

Can you describe in greater detail where the lower sacrum? Would like to try this out. Are you essentially talking about the area below the small of your back?

Hi,

I cut the patches in half so that I have two smaller rectangles. After that, I take one part and apply it to the sacral area. It's tough to describe where. If you feel the two 'knobs' in the area that mark the back of your hips, the corners on the upper half of the patch are just barely touching the bottoms of those.

Hopefully, that makes sense. :)
