Long terms use of Aleve (naproxen) or other NSAIDS to curb pain
Luckily through about a year and a half of dilligent work with the SP protocol I have been able to reduce my pain to very managable- my symptoms only really bother me after urination/defecation/ejaculation, like many here. But I have found that one or two Aleve (naproxen) spread out over a day can eliminate almost all of the discomfort I feel from chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome even after urinating, etc. What I am wondering, and I guess this is a question for my doctor too, is how safe is long term use of NSAIDS like this, especially Aleve (naproxen). Besides chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome I am a healthy 20 year old, with no other real problems. I know Aleve (naproxen) is not a 'cure' but it keeps my morale up to be out of pain, and I think it helps limit the noxious stimuli feedback loop of chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome by letting me forget about the pain and relax. In this way I think a long term pain-prevention technique not designed to fix the problem directly can in actuality help me get better. Thoughts, comments?
Age:22 | Onset Age:16.5 | Symptoms: Pain with extended sitting, Pain shortly folllowing urination, mostly above pubic bone, Pain after defecation mostly around external sphincter, Pain after ejaculation mostly in Urethra | Helped By: Progressive and Moment to Moment Relaxation, Stretching, Bed Rest (laying down and relaxing muscles), Hot Baths, Hot Showers, | Worsened By: Alcohol (variably), Ejaculation, Urination, Defecation, Stress, Extended Sitting, Sleeping in the wrong position, tensing my muscles while writing or doing anything else stressful/intense, Progress: 65%, basically only dealing with post-ejaculatory pain, onset after about an hour, peaks for 3-6 hours and then remains sore for a day.
There are lots of posts on this forum (and site) about NSAIDs, and their effects, so be sure to do some searching to get a complete picture. Many people find NSAIDs to be hard on the stomach. They have been known to cause ulcers if used excessively, and there was even a recent post in the last few months containing an article detailing damage to the intestinal lining by NSAIDs. The point is, I wouldn't look at long term use as the optimal solution. I think you are doing the right thing getting yourself out of pain and keeping your morale up. That's highly important. But as you get older, your stomach will just not be able to handle what it used to. I used Ibuprofen heavily for many years until starting the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, and at this point, I can only barely tolerate it whereas early on I could tolerate 1800mg per day. So I am sure my stomach lining was harmed a little bit after all that use.
There are other NSAIDs out there, and some of them may be better on the stomach and have fewer long term effects than others. If you are using it for the anti-inflamatory effects, there may be some natural remedies you can try as well that wouldn't have the same effects but may be able to meet your needs since it sounds like you are only using them at a minimal level now.
Either way, keep up the good work! I hope you make a 100% recovery soon. There are a lot of young posters on this board (18-25), and your story is a good one for them to read so they know their life isn't over when they come down with CPPS.

My stomach couldn't take serious NSAID usage - so I'm using Tramadol for long term pain management. I've been on around 100-200mgs a day for the past 14 months.
There's others on this board who have been on 400mgs a day for 2-3 years without any issues - but of course I'd rather be medication free. Some day soon I hope
Richard.

CppsDad,
You mentioned long term problems with using NASIDS on the stomach you said there are some ones that are better on the stomach then Aleve (naproxen) and do not causes ulcers I was wonder what they were if you know?
You also said if you are using them for anti inflamatory effect that there might be some natural remedies like herbs that if the same effect without the stomach problem side effect if you know what they are can you give me some info on this? This could help because in the going on three years now that I have had this problem I have never been a big pill person in my life and I am 24 yrs old and I have hated ever time I take the different medicines I have been given by doctors to help me.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GOOD IF YOU CAN HELP THAT IS?

Overall, pain killers besides the NSAID's will be easier on your stomach. I'm not very knowledgeable of the various pain killers out there, but there are a lot of posters on the forums who are. I'd post a separate topic to get more visibility.
Do a search on-line for natural anti-inflammatory medicines. I don't know how well they work, but they are probably easier for you.
I'm currently going through hell due to the NSAID's I took - they've ruined my stomach, and now I'm paying the price. Ulcers, IBS, and sensitivity are killing me. I just took the NSAID's for too long.
I don't know if I'd do things different, but I wish I had been given other choices or better drugs to battle my pain. Fortunately, my pain is at a reasonable level now that I don't take the NSAID's any more.

I have never taken pain medication for this even when it was at its worst. I just felt that though the pain was terrible at times, at least I knew that everything else was working well. I had fears that if I took medicines for pain it could mess something else up. ex vioxx-heart advil- aneurisms

what I wrote in a previous posting - and then regretted, thinking it hust have seemed patronising - about the body's natural inclination to heal itself, I'm sure it must be more positive if you're not taking pain meds, anti-inflamatories etc. Personally, I'm not so brave. I do reach for NSAIDs or neuropathological medicine or diazepam. But I'm concerned sometimes that, in numbing sensations, I'm concealing healing clues from my body with which to heal itself.
Age: 44 | Onset Age:41 | Symptoms: abdominal pain and discomfort, urinary frequency, low libido | Helped By: quercetin, diazepam, neurontin, Elavil | Worsened By: sex, alcohol, caffeine
I have use ibuprofen, naproxin, celabrex, bextra, meloxicam and found that the doses that I required to help with pain was greater the prescibed dose and I end up with stomach pain from them. The pancreatin supplements did next to nothing, I see them as a waste of money because the cost of them are very high. Mabe they might work better for you. Now all the seems to help me is oxycodone and bladder instillations. If I had to do it again I would not use so much nsa inflammitories. I have been using ibuprofen for joint and back pain at least ten year before I got CPPS.
I HAVE NO MEDICAL TRAINING JUST CPPS

I've used Naproxen and Ibuprofen for about 4 months. They help a lot but I got some lab tests that showed my liver enzymes were elevated. I'm gonna go off them and see if they return to normal. You try to fix something and you damage something else, what a drag.
