Re: Flare Question

Post by garyholc »

Unfortunately I am back near square one the past week or so, I had a rather mad sex session a fortnight ago, I knew I would regret it but hey, I gotta live my life, the past two weeks I have had horrible burning pain up my ass and the frequency has come back, :62_58_40: so yeah it comes back really quick, pain in the ass (xcuse the pun) and I am going to see my PT on the 11th - just one of those things I guess. You can either live your life like a saint and do nothing wrong, or life it as you want to and just suffer the consequences afterwards! But, dam, the girl was hot!!!!!!! :) :) :)
Age: 33 | Onset Age: 32 Initial Symptoms: Frequent urination Current Symptoms: The odd feeling of frequency but not much else Helped By: Not thinking about it, hot bath, red wine, light exercise, Bowen technique seems to help, getting on with my life Worsened By: catastrophic thinking, worrying things will get worse, feeling depressed, reading websites too often! Work! Sitting in work all day isn't good!! Current Progress : Since 1st Sept 08, no pain!!! :)

heading out to see Wise

Post by gmccormack »

I'm scheduled to go out to the Stanford/Sonoma clinic in 6 days. I spoke with Dr. Wise today because I am feeling significantly better over the past 2 months, in fact my symptoms don't bother me anymore although I do still have mild back pain and urgency. He said I should still go to the clinic because it will inevitably come back at some point in my life and I need to be prepared. I'm actually glad he made the decision for me, I was torn. My fear was I would get out there and he would say "why are you here?" He said I was feeling better because knew I was going to get help, I disagree. I think it's because I have been getting PT and using his protocol but why argue at this point.

I will update you guys will anything from the clinic that is not already on these boards. You can let me know if there's any questions you have and I will try to ask them.

Hi there,

Have a safe trip! Please do report back and let us know how things went. People are always curious about others' experiences at the clinic.

Re: I'm back from the clinic

Post by gmccormack »

Well I'm back from the clinic. It is now held at the Flamingo in Santa Rosa, CA, it has changed throughout the years. The whole thing is there, very convenient, Tim has a room with a PT bed and everything.

I was skeptical heading out there but after the first day I absolutely knew this was a muscular issue, not diet, not an infection, not inflammation, not urine going back into the prostate, merely muscular.

Dr. Wise was incredible as was Tim, I have the wand which is a new version for this clinic, it measures the amount of pressure you are putting on the rectals walls etc, I think they had issues with guys just ramming it in there in the past. The wand is very easy to use, I had internal PT before although nothing like Tim so I was not as apprehensive as most were. Some men claimed to be pain free by the time they left the clinic, those were the ones with just 1 or 2 symptoms though. I had what Dr. Wise called "garden variety CPPS" I'll take that as a good thing at this point.

One of the most beneficial things was a visit from a guy who's a laywer in Mississippi, he was a mirror image of me. His onset was at 28 struggled through law school and went to the clinic back in 2004. Dr Wise said he was in the most pain out of any of his patients, according to him he was in real bad shape. It took him 2 years but he is PAIN FREE not a twang here and there, PAIN FREE. There are hundreds of patients like these who have gone to the clinic. This guy is just your everyday well spoken guy, he comes every month or does his piece on Skype because he feels so grateful for Dr. Wise and crew. He helped not only as further proof but because Dr. Wise tends to be intellectual and sometimes you get your doubts.

Let me know if you have any questions, I think the PM thing is no longer available though. Also, I want to thank those of you on this forum who convinced me to go, it was well worth it. I have a lot of work to do, the relaxation are very frustrating now but in time I know I will get a good routine and be pain free.

FYI, there were a 2 guys there who had TURPS and ended up worse, and 1 who had pudendal nerve surgery, no help. Do not even think about these procedures.

How much did it cost you?
Age 32, onset 32 Onset Aug 07- frequency was main problem in the beginning-really bad. Now 1 to 2x per night when frequency flairs up. Sore and tight lower abdominal muscles. Occasional burning after bowel movement and full feeling. What helps: Healthy diet(this is huge for me) Started drinking super greens supplament and almost going totally vegetarian to get body more alkaline, starting Prosta-Q, quercetin/zinc tablet in morning helped frequency problem I believe. Massaging abs and doing stretches helps calm down frequency when it is acting up. Wine or vodka after long day. Flexeral and melatonin at night. Swimming and light weights. .5 of Elavil every other day helps with frequency and healing process. Trying to stay positive and not stressing over this!

This is great insight...Thank you for the update and the wand is something I would like to know about as well...I have a slender 7 that I don't want to use because I can not tell where I'm at and what pressure I have on the area I'm working on...

Best :-D

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

I am very curious what Tim and Dr. Wise advised you to AVOID from an activity perspective. For example, you mentioned some people left the clinic pain free - were they told not return to cycling or weightlifting, etc... for fear of bringing back the issue.
Common sense certainly would suggest to avoid the activities that may have caused the problem - but I am interested in hearing how they advised...

Thanks
Age: 44 | Onset Age: 43 | Symptoms: Steady burning in the perineum. Left side (Pudendal Nerve?) worse - almost no pain on right side. Mild ED. Urine often is split stream at start. Unknown cause - Profile seems a bulls-eye for this issue - I am serious cyclist, weight lift, and suffer mild constipation, and sit all day at office. Bicyclist for years without a problem - started frequent hard weight lifting - then suffered perineum pain. | Helped By: Sleep - I wake up every morning with NO symptoms. Symptoms present everyday while sitting, after BM, etc.. Hot bath helps. Moment-to-moment relaxation helps ( I tend to clench my pelvic floor when concentrating or stress). This board helps - reading other (PNA) boards make things worse. Being distracted helps. Sex is OK. Have only had external pelvic floor PT - only one Pelvic floor PT in my area. | Worsened By: Bowel Movement, sitting for extended periods, some weight workouts, sometimes cycling .

To respond to you all,

Calguy - the cost was 3,750, the hotel was 100 bucks a night. So the total cost with hotel, food, car, and clinic was probably $6,000. Pricey, but it was worth it and I now have the tools. In addition, if you don't have health insurance you have to pay for the uro eval which is $700 for the big dog Anderson, or $200 for Smith, these are randomly assigned.

Carl and Raptor- The wand was $100, we had to sign tons of forms for it, it is patent pending. It is shaped like the Theracane but much thinner obviously. You insert while sitting down with your back up on pillows rather than squirming around with your finger which was also a way Tim and Dr. Wise had us try. The wand hits the trigger points and sore areas deep inside next to the prostate that cause symptoms like pain on ejaculation and pain at the tip of penis. It is extremely easy to use. It is hooked up pretty rudimentary to a device which digitally shows the amount of pressure, we are not supposed to go above 50 for example, how many lbs that is? No clue, Dr Wise did give us the math at one point . I would call Dr. Wise and ask him about purchasing, I have no idea what the cost is because I think some of it may be included in the clinic although not everyone got the wand, those who didn't have internal trigger points obviously didn't get it.

JTC1 - I was a big weightlifter and 10 K runner, my pain is worse and I have a flare when I lift heavy weights. I asked that exact question. He said that he recommends jogging and light weights, you need to find your tolerance, for me it's about half of what I was doing. Tim did make a point though that he has seen guys get better and go back into it pretty hard. Those guys I mentioned that left with no symptoms, they are far from out of the water, they are still going to have to keep up with the protocol or else it will be back. None of them seemed to be big time atheletes or weightlifters though.

FYI - there is going to be 6th edition coming out fairly shortly, it will include more about women which no one here cares about and some about diet but I think more about IBS diet rather than chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome being caused by diet like Webslaves was. Funny note, one of the guys there was a video game designer he was thinking about making a Wii "game" which shows an image of the pelvic floor on the screen and the wand would be the remote and you can see exactly what muscle you were on.

That is an incredible idea. My Wii would finally get some use and it would help with my "Wii Wii" so it would feel normal and I can start to use it again...

Just to clarify: my chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome was not caused by diet. But diet, and in particular gluten, made it much, much worse and also compounded the chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome with CFS. There is no question that I was (am) a person prone to anxiety and sensitive to stress, and at the time I developed chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome I was under intense work stress, complete with sweating and panic attacks. I got better by
  1. Changing my job and lifestyle to strictly limit stress
  2. Internal massage with a homemade wand (not recommended!). In those days (1991) nobody else was doing it, so it was entirely an intuitive move on my part.
  3. These above two points got me 50% better, but only when I stopped eating the nerve poison gluten that I started, finally, to move towards full health.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

Gmccormack, does the wand have a brand name yet or any other identifying info on it?

Calman,

No brand name, just a patent pending sticker. The design was created by Tim Sawyer with I'm assuming the help of David Wise. I think once they get enough for the FDA or whoever would sanction such a tool then it will be available for sale to the public. I would call Dr Wise, talk to one his assistants they are all very nice, they're the ones that were keeping track of trial ID's etc.

It is really convenient, perfect size, and has a length-stop so you can go in too deep, measure pressure. But it not a miracle, I bet with some work you could make the same thing maybe out of some kind of aluminum, heat and bend it, sodder a handle...? It won't tell you the pressure but I have had it for 3 days and don;t even look at where I'm at anymore, you just can gauge. You put a lubricated gloved finger over the end of the wand (very important).

I tried attaching how it looks and works, don't know if it willl go through. My drawing are pretty poor but hopefully you get the idea.

No, I use it two times per week, internal work 3 times per week. I am actually seeing a great therapist now as well, Randy Payne (thank you MikeinLA), who treats me once a week. I will say that my big issues are not internal but external, and may phase down the internal work in a few months. I cannot find the trigger point to relieve the last dull pain in my right testicle which spasms all day everyday.

The wand is simply a very convenient tool, Wise and the lawyer who was healed said it was a game changer, not sure I would go that far.
