Re: Proscar for treatment of prostatitis
Completely useless in treating CP/CPPS...Early on in my onset, my first uro put me on avodart for 3 months...I did not last the 3 months before I had to stop, I was an emotional wreck!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a horrible drug in my opinion. Buyer beware!!!

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Funny you say that, I was just about to post the same thing.carld wrote:Completey useless...Early on in my onset, my first uro put me on it for 3 months...I did not last, I was an emotional wreck!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a horrible drug in my opinion. Buyer beware!!!
I took 1 mg of finasteride in a generic form for hair loss and in the hope that it would also work for the prostate. Proscar contains 5 mg of finasteride, Propecia for hair loss 1 mg.
It certainly has its value for people with BPH or to halt hair loss but IMO it's useless for CPPS.
On the emotional thing: keep in mind this drug messes with hormones since it's an antiandrogen, it inhibits conversion from testosterone in DHT, the stuff that causes prostate hypertrophy and hair loss.
In some people finasteride it is known to cause mood swings and depression. I'd say the majority of users do not experience this if you look at the trials vs placebo but nevertheless I didn't feel emotionally right on it.

Re: Proscar for treatment of prostatitis
My sex drive was OK, my emotional state wasn't. I'm always a bit weary about taking pills on end and in the case of hair loss you have to continue taking it or you'll lose all hair that you retained or even regained.carld wrote:I cried more in those few weeks I took it than I did in my whole life...I had no desire for sex and I usually have a monster sex drive...thank god I still do after I stopped taking that sh*t....
It did nothing for the chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome though and I just didn't feel normal. Mind you, I am kind of an hypochondriac and as I said most of the people do not have too many side effects and over time it has a pretty good safety record:
http://www.rxlist.com/proscar-drug.htm
Nothing on there about emotional side effects but I talked to a Dr. and she told me she'd seen it before in some patients. Some studies confirm this:

Not a valid option for chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome patients, check back when your prostate is the size of a melon

Didn't do anything for me.
Started: Spring 2003; high urinary frequency and pain associated with bladder filling; urinary hesitancy; pubic/prostate/perineal discomfort; Helped by: trigger point therapy, Afrin nasal spray, Cymbalta, hydrocodone (small doses), distraction. Makes worse: sex.

Re: Proscar for treatment of prostatitis
Thank you to those who responded and detailed their experience with Proscar. I am still not sure how reducing the size of the prostate reduces inflammation or what the relationship is between BPH and Prostatitis?kevin wrote:Didn't do anything for me.
It seems like I should try saw palmetto or any accredited quercetin product first before Proscar. I need to gather more information before I make a decision. It appears that Proscar may or may not help reduce inflammation in the prostate and there could be side effects when taking Proscar. I may take it because I need to do something.
There was an interesting artivle in the Buufalo news which basically said:
“Healthy men older than 55 who are concerned enough about the risk of prostate cancer to undergo annual PSA screening should consider taking the drug finasteride daily to reduce their risk of developing the disease, according to a prevention guideline released Tuesday. “If a man is interested enough in being screened, then at least he ought to have the benefits of a discussion” with his doctor about taking the drug, Dr. Barnett S. Kramer of the National Institutes of Health said in a news conference announcing the guideline.

I wish there was a prostatitis center in the Buffalo, NY area.

Hi Joseph,
If I were you, I'd first consider taking a trip to NYC. There are a number of physical therapists in the area who treat male pelvic pain. Stacey Futterman is in NYC itself, and Marilyn Freedman is (I believe) a bit further along.
Best,
Jay

Re: Proscar for treatment of prostatitis
I took Proscar for a year when I was in the *kitchen sink* mode. My Uro prescribed it, so I added it to all the other stuff I was on. It didn't do a thing for my pains, but I had zero side effects. I'm currently taking a low dose of Effexor daily, and have felt well for a long time now. This condition brought me down and it wasn't until recently that I realized chronic depression had set in though my pains are virtually gone. The Effexor does effect my sex drive, but not horribly, and it was the cause for my initial onset anyway, so I'm happy to have a little less.

Sobot,
Why did you take proscar? Did a uro prescribe them to you for CP/CPPS and your symptoms got worse?
