Questions from a Newbie

Post by gmccormack »

Hi All,

I just saw my urologist this morning he admitted that I do not have an infection and took me off antibiotics, they were not working. He prescribed Elavil, Cardura, and Elmiron. He said they should relax the muscles and increase blood flow.

He did another DRE and to be honest it didn't hurt as much as the last time (1 month ago) and he said it was a good sign.

I almost broke down a few times with tears during the appointment but I have not lost all hope yet. The urologist is my second and I think he actually does care as he seemed more annoyed with himself rather than my issue. I have had this for 2 months and 3 weeks, I have spoken to a few people who have had this before and they say it eventually "passes" but then again I have many doubts.

This is ruining my life, I want to go out to Stanford but the urologist said to wait at least another month.

The urologist said I will get better, he has seen patients with this for a full year who recover and it is extremely pre mature to lose hope.

I hope these medications work but I think its just to mask the pain.

Any thoughts?

My experience with alpha blockers is they do not work at all to help ease the discomfort. I took alpha blockers for over a year...

The Elavil will help with anxiety and mast cell protection and is a good choice in healing. Low dosage 10mg is good...I now cut the 10mg in half with a pill cutter every night before I go to bed.

Elmiron is old school...Just my opinion...I'm not a doctor... :-D
Good luck...

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

I went on Alpha-blockers in 2002--and I think it actually did help my symptoms. If you have issues with poor urinary flow and muscle spasms, Flomax should help.

I am going to see a urologist next Friday--it will be interesting to see what he says..

Hey Silas,

Hope all goes well, I know you had said you hoped you had CP rather than something more serious.

Good luck...

This is true...Alpha blockers help relax the smoothe muscle of the prostate and bladder neck. So this will help empty your bladder...

BUT...for CP/CPPS pain and discomfort, this is not the way to go. You will not be helped by alpha blockers...Infact, I wish uros would stop prescribing AB's and Alpha Blockers and get caught up on more cutting edge theories that are talked about in this forum...

I'm not a doctor...

Best, Carl..
