Re: Introduction:Mon. Dec.15th JoVo Chicago
haha -
Well then I have the best Doctor in the world for this because he's really good at whipping out his prescription pad...and not much else.
I had been doing pretty good at living my life with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome - although lately it has been more difficult (perhaps due to the cold - it is 18 below tonite here in Chicago) - but for the most part - only my Wife and best friend know I have this - I put on my brave face around friends - and nobody is the wiser.
One good thing about being an Artist - is that friends don't think it's too weird if you drop off the map for a bit - they just assume you're working on new pieces or whatever.
However, whenever I get a worse than "day to day CPPS" pain flareup - I find it hard to not get caught up in the Anxiety/More Pain/More Anxiety/Pain cycle.
At that point I feel like I'm making a big mistake by ignoring it - like pain exists for a reason - as a warning of something serious - and then the obsessive Dr.s visits begin - which result in ultrasounds, blood tests, and rectal exams - that leave me with healthy test results, irritated genitals and a depressed dispirited mood (because it does get draining living a life with this - as well as other health problems).
Since I've found this board - I'm working hard to live from the viewpoint that chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome is just another symptom of living with an Anxiety Disorder and the *cure* is Stress Management, the stretches & tips found in A HEADACHE IN THE PELVIS & staying calm.
It's still very easy for me to get wrapped up in the catastrophic thinking & I still get anxious when I think about the possibility that I'll have to live with these symptoms for the rest of my life.
I've read a lot of the success stories past posts from Panicked beginnings to calm, proactive, functioning now's.
That's encouraging stuff and I hope to be one of those inspirations myself.
Thanks guys...
Joseph

Age:46 | Onset Age:42 (first occurence Age 17). | Symptoms: A belt of pain that wraps around my waist radiating down my groin & into testicles. Also: Radiating from hips down thighs, Urinary urgency even after voiding, lightning bolts of pain that shoot through my rectum, penis & perineum, muscle spasms in my bottocks, fear of sexual arousal or erection. | Helped By: Hot Water Therapy, RSA Breathing, Pacing more than sitting, Avoiding Negative People, Painting & Writing, Painkillers. | Worsened By: Wearing Pants, Anger, Panic, Depression, Stress, Vigorous Sex, Prolonged Sitting, Constipation, Abrupt Movements, Lifting/Carrying anything more than a Gallon of Milk, Forgetting to do the above things I'm helped by. *Ejaculation is a Mixed bag: It definitely relieves pressure & pain in my Abdomen (as well as a good emotional release) - But, causes bigtime burning in my penis & perineum for 10-45 minutes after.

Re: Introduction:Mon. Dec.15th JoVo Chicago
I've saved up enough money to make an appointment to see Rhonda. There is a physical therapist named Rhonda Kotarinos in your vicinity, and she is considered to be one of the authorities on treating chronic pelvic pain/pelvic floor dysfunction.
Here's her info:
Rhonda Kotarinos Physical
1 Tower Ln
Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181
(630) 368-0177
Jay
She also told me she knows a Therapist who teaches Paradoxical Relaxation as described in HITP not far from my home.
I'm hoping I can see them atleast 1 or 2 times - get some "homework" - and save more money so I can see them again as I progress.
I'm working with my Theracane, & carefully doing stretches - etc.
My progress is pretty slow.
But, I am having more bearable days than unbearable - so I do consider it progress even though it is all still pretty much my entire life right now.
I cannot seem to wean any lower on my pain meds and accomplish anything with my days (or do any therapies) - and that's frustrating - but, I am managing on 1/3rd of what I'm allowed to take - so I'm kinda' proud of that.
I spoke to my Accupuncturist who now lives in New Mexico & he said to go back on the Broccoli Therapy - he said that in most people it can take 3 months to make a real difference.
Taking regular Magnesium has helped with the Abdomen Tremors considerably.
So far though - the RSA Breathing has been the most immediate relief I've found for this.
It really really helps me get through the worst times.
Wish me luck guys...
Thanks...
Joseph

Joseph, keep it up. Progress can be slow, 2 steps forward then 1 step back. Simply persevere.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

Hi Joseph,
It's great to hear of your progress. I'm really glad that you made contact with Rhonda, and that she knows of some resources close to you. Your posts suggest that you benefit from your own attempts at relaxation, and so I'd think that the guidance of a professional can only improve upon that!
Regarding your pain medications, don't force it. I know you're concerned about taking them, but if you can only wean so far, that's okay. Take what you have to take, and the rest can go once your symptoms have improved.
Please let us know how your appointment with Rhonda goes. I've kept track of your story and would be very interested to hear her assessment!
Best,
Jay

Re: Introduction:Mon. Dec.15th JoVo Chicago
Well.
Last nite was filled with pacing and an inability to sleep from the anxiety associated with my appointment with Rhonda as well as my DSPS (Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome) - which gets set off by stress.
I was going to reschedule my appointment with Rhonda because I couldn't imagine getting much help walking in her office full of Anxiety & sleep deprived.
But - She encouraged my Wife to come anyhow.
We had typed up a detailed list of my symptoms to bring with us so we'd not forget anything and Rhonda and her spoke for a long time in her office.
She said she was convinced that all of my Pelvic symptoms were trigger point related - as they were textbook, however severe - even the pain/hypersensitivity in my front teeth (that have been repeatedly X-Ray'd) - the "Arthritis" in my knees (for which I underwent Hyalgan injections - with no improvement) - (even though repeated X-Rays show nothing but minor age appropriate degeneration) - as well as my "Peripheral Neuropathy" (for which I've undergone the painful EEG testing twice - and the results were that I have a *touch* of Neuropathy - but nothing that would indicate the severe pain I experience).
So my Wife comes home and tells me all of this and we're ecstatic - we literally wept with joy & relief.
All of the years of unexplainable pain finally begin to make sense.
How could any one person have all of these problems and not show results in test after test?
So we call my wife's parents and they agree to loan us the money for the Phys Therapy sessions with Rhonda.
(We've never asked them for a loan or anything like that).
I even start to think that I might be able to sleep normal again (since most often my sleep is interrupted by pain).
Hope!
So - I call Rhonda to make my first treatment appointment - and she says:
"I'm glad you called - I'm not going to be able to treat you - I ask why - and she says - I can't treat people who are disabled - I say - no, no, no - I'm going to pay you cash - and she says "no you don't understand I cannot treat you at all because you're disabled".
So - I'm pretty despondent right about now.
I really had the rug ripped out from under me.
Thanks guys...

Is their some rule that prevents a PT from treating someone who has an official designation of disabled?

Hi,
I'm a little confused as well. Did she offer you no more specific reasoning than "because you're disabled"? My physical therapist has said no such thing, and has actually been the most forthcoming of my treaters in my efforts to get SSI.

Re: Introduction:Mon. Dec.15th JoVo Chicago
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the concern.
I've been careful with my words because I know you're not supposed to slag Doctors on this board - (so if I'm saying anything beyond the limit here - feel free to edit or erase my message Admin) - but - well - Rhonda was a very rude person.
I suspected something weird when I first spoke with her and she said that She is the one who trained Dr. Wise & the entire HITP is based on what she taught him.
She went on to say that her Therapist friend Helena Markos taught Dr. Wise Paradoxical Relaxation.
I decided not to get involved in "politics" and just let that exchange slip from my memory - I just want help - I don't care who invented what.
Anyhow - She said that what I am dealing with is all trigger point related and it is going to take time - but that I'll recover if I follow her recommendations.
She even took out the Travell & Simons book and showed my Wife how all of my problems are related and that my wife can sit in on all of my appointments so she can learn how to continue the therapy at home in between visits.
So - we were just ecstatic with happiness - I felt like - okay - I know this is going to be a long hard road - but I'll do whatever it takes do get better again.
So - I called her to make my appointment - and she said - what I said in the first Thread - I'm glad you called, I can't treat you because you're disabled - the conversation was short because I was stunned.
I did ask her what I should do now and she was very brief and cold to me - she said - well there is another PT closer to your house that I taught long ago but I don't know if she treats Men - and Loyola Hospital has a program for pelvic pain - but I'm not sure if it's directed towards Men.
And she said "okay goodbye".
I was pretty speechless.
My Wife was enraged though - wanted to sue her - scream at her - etc.
I said - let's focus our energy in a positive direction and just forget about her - but my Wife called her anyhow - and Rhonda - just read off some long insurance thing in a robotic tone at my Wife - and said goodbye - not even "I'm sorry - I wish you luck" or anything polite or human like that.
I've been to PT's for my Feet, Knees & Whiplash in the past - (since I've been disabled) - and all kinds of Alternative Medicine practitioners - and never had a problem...and they all knew I was disabled.
But Rhonda had some insurance or legal problem with it.
I called the PT she mentioned - but thus far have gotten no call back from Her.
So - I guess I'll keep calling around to different PT's and hope to find one who specializes in CPPS.
I really don't know what else I can do.
I'm trying to not let this get me too far down.
I'm trying to look at this as - OK - if there is one person out there who claims that all of these mystery problems I've been suffering from for all of these years are Trigger Point related and that they can help me - there must be another one out there too.
If I lose hope - I'm done for.
Wish me luck Guys.
Joseph

Hi Joseph,
I'm very sorry about what happened to you with Kotarinos. She is one of the "big names" in PFD treatment, which is why she's often recommended, but this incident will certainly give me pause in the future. Nevertheless, you are certainly entitled to be upset after going through the process of consultation for nothing.
My suggestion would be to contact Doctor Wise and talk to him about what happened. Perhaps he'd have another resource in mind for you, as he tends to be pretty well connected.
Best,
Jay

It's just the build up and let down on top of the rude insensitivity that was difficult to deal with.
That was just plain strange.
Tomorrow I will just take a deep breath & start to make phonecalls, send more emails - etc.
There has to be someone helpful out there that I can get to.
A minor setback!
thanks...

A minor setback!
thanks...

Kotarinos is good at what she does, but I've heard from several sources that she can be very discourteous and has delusions of grandeur.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

Don't you just wish that you could press a button, and that person would have the identical symptoms as you for a few days, just so they understand what you are going through! Mind you, its whether or not for some people you would press the off button again afterwards
JoVo just something I thought I would mention, but your symptoms say you get shooting pains in the rectum, I used to have this on occasion and sometimes still do, for a fraction of a second, but my PT said dont let this worry you and dont always see it as a negative thing. As things heal and adjust you are bound to get some nerve/muscle pain. Like he said to me, imagine holding your fist tightly clenched for a month, it would hurt, but it would probably hurt more when you unclench it afterwards...

Re: Introduction:Mon. Dec.15th JoVo Chicago
I made contact with the - MYO Pain Relief Center Chicago - http://www.myopain.com/index.html - I'm hoping they get back to me soon.
I emailed them yesterday and someone got back to me right away - asking for more details - so I sent them info and now am waiting.
My Wife said she'll go to classes for this if that is what it takes.
I've had little luck finding trigger points on my own.
I'm in so much pain in so many spots - it just seems like everything hurts.
But I just try to follow the charts in the Workbook and hope I'll get something out of it.
Also : Back when I first read HITP I spoke to Dr. Wise and he said he couldn't think of anyone to refer me to in my area.
He advised me to re-read HITP and try to follow what I can from the book - he said "My book is my best advice".
Because I'm so limited with money - I never really started a search for a PT.
I think because I have multiple health problems - people who specialize in one area are hesitant to take me on.
Symptoms have been worse today - likely because of the Kotarinos experience.
It's very difficult to get a little hope - finally - and then have the rug yanked out from under you.
Yeah Gary - it's hard to not get very negative towards people.
I have done so much charity work in Chicago.
I can't even understand where someones head is at who has the power to help someone and refuses, due to some policy or law.
Even in the state I'm in - I'm the kinda' guy who would run into a burning building to save a person without a second thought.
I really don't know how someone like Rhonda can sleep at night knowing there is this guy out there in pain - who came to her for help - she lit us up like a christmas tree after she said she could help - I mean my wife even broke down and cried and hugged her - and then she denies treatment - and just chalks it off to another day at work.
It borders on cruel sadism.
But, i can't allow it to get me down too low.
I've gotta' save my energy to find help.
Thanks guys...
Joseph
