New genetic studies

Post by kevin »

I was just browsing on ClinicalTrials.gov, and saw that Dr. Dimitrakov has two new listings for genetic pelvic pain studies: "Linkage Analysis in Interstitial Cystitis" and "Diagnostic Challenges in IC (and Male CPPS)".

Dr. Dimitrakov, would it help if we posted about these studies on the "announcements" page? Also, are these recent studies open to people who have already participated in one of the below studies you are conducting?

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00499317
http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00389142

It seems all trials involve a saliva sample, so I am wondering if the studies are related.
Started: Spring 2003; high urinary frequency and pain associated with bladder filling; urinary hesitancy; pubic/prostate/perineal discomfort; Helped by: trigger point therapy, Afrin nasal spray, Cymbalta, hydrocodone (small doses), distraction. Makes worse: sex.

Hi, Kevin,

Thanks for the opportunity to clarify. The two new studies should be posted on the announcement page, i.e. "Linkage Analysis in Interstitial Cystitis" and "Diagnostic Challenges in IC (and Male CPPS)".

The first study is our genomics-based study which involves a saliva sample from which we extract DNA (no need for a blood sample any more). Participants do not need to travel to participate.

The "Diagnostic Challenges" study is the original biomarker study in which we use a different technology called "proteomics" to look for defective proteins. Sometimes, the genes might be perfectly fine but there might be a change at the protein level which would go undetected in a genomic scan. For this study, we collect blood, urine and also plan to collect prostatic fluid and serum.

Best,
JD
