Tensing the Belly = Don't do it!!!

Post by chath »

So here's the deal. I was talking with someone who has been doing the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol for 4 years now, and he mentioned teaching himself to NOT tense up the abdomen or suck in your gut. I had never heard this before. I realized that for years I have been a chronic belly sucker...not sure how else to describe it. I did this for 2 reasons, 1) I figured doing this would better tone the stomach and 2) I'm pretty skinny, a belly sticking out of a skinny frame looks ridiculous.

I've always been kind of weight obsessed, used to be a runner, like, crazy running, everyday, long long runs. I like being skinny. Little did I know, constantly sucking in my gut and tensing my stomach probably developed into CPPS, or at the very least contributed.

After talking with my SP mentor, I made sure to let that belly fly. Who gives a shit if you have a beer belly, as long as YOU feel good, and YOU are happy, right?? This has probably been a month now, and it has made a difference in my recovery. I'm not 100% better. I've been doing the SP since September and I've been up and down. But FO SHOW relaxing the belly is key.

SO........if you are one who has a history of sucking in the gut...STOP IT! My SP pal likened it to how a child’s belly is. Their bellies stick out, right? Because it's relaxed. Just how nature intended. Let those beer bellies fly gentlemen!

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

My Pt has me working lower abdomen around bladder with some light exercises. I believe this is to help support the bladder and help with frequency. She said no situps though. She has also been working with abdominal trigger points which tie into the muscles around bladder. I don't know if it is good for everyone to just let it all hang out. It has been working and cut frequency in half.
Age 32, onset 32 Onset Aug 07- frequency was main problem in the beginning-really bad. Now 1 to 2x per night when frequency flairs up. Sore and tight lower abdominal muscles. Occasional burning after bowel movement and full feeling. What helps: Healthy diet(this is huge for me) Started drinking super greens supplament and almost going totally vegetarian to get body more alkaline, starting Prosta-Q, quercetin/zinc tablet in morning helped frequency problem I believe. Massaging abs and doing stretches helps calm down frequency when it is acting up. Wine or vodka after long day. Flexeral and melatonin at night. Swimming and light weights. .5 of Elavil every other day helps with frequency and healing process. Trying to stay positive and not stressing over this!

Doing exercises to tone the abdomen and sitting with a perpetually (slightly) tense abdomen are two quite different things.

I was doing exactly the same thing. And for me, if I suck in the belly, the pelvic floor lifts as well. I definitely sucked in the belly because I wanted to look better. I am also skinny and a belly to me would be very sad. To help this, I have actually done some cardio workout followed by sit ups. I have shed some fat off the belly and tightened it up. This allows me to relax the abdomen without it looking like the Buddha type beer belly.
Age: 31 Previous symptoms: penile pain, pain in the rectum, occasional shooting pain in the perineum. Helped by: relaxing / meditation, internal massage, abdominal massage, stretching Makes worse: stress, being out of comfort zone. Current symptoms: Occasional mild soarness. www.kroniskprostatitt.com 95 % better

Yep, me here and I think this caused mine too. I used to really suck it in and hold the chest high. I thought I was improving my posture......I still catch myself doing it sometimes not on purpose, just like I still clench the pelvic floor not on purpose.

At least now I can feel the difference......

I was a suck the stomach in guy since I was eight years old. Letting my stomach just relax felt so unnatural to me. Now if feels normal to let it just relax.

Agreed, keeping your core strong is not the same as sucking in the stomach in a habitual way.

Well, SS, looking at your picture puts most of us to shame.

I almost had a "faint" outline of a six-pack going for the first time in my life then chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome struck... I went back to doing some lifting but then I had a few bad flares. Not sure if it's related but I do want to be careful.

yes be careful I quit training for 2 years and in that time I devoted all energy to figuring this thing out, I continue to progress each month. I now train abs 3 x per week with weights and I dont notice more symptoms from doing so. But, I also spent 6 mos or better massaging out trigger points througout my entire core and under my obliques.
