My progress (Calguy's Case)
Well guys been away from computer for a while but just checked in and catching up on the posts about this being progressive or going away or gradually getting better over a few years. I have been feeling really good and feel like I am getting better. My PT has been great and I think it is helping a lot. She says she has seen most men improve with trigger point therapy and feels I am on my way to recovery. I was a little depressed to hear people get worse but I think the majority of us with lifestyle changes and sticking to protocol improve. She felt my prostate and wasn't hardly any pain but when she pressed the tissue next to it probably about 10 o'clock position I was really sore. (Which makes me wonder if it is even anything to do with prostate) She feels that is where I need the most work. My question is do trigger points cause pain when being worked on and how do I know she is finding the right ones. I know I feel much better after treatment and pain is gone after she works on me. Have to admit last session was ruff but she said it is like peeling away layers gradually to treat area. She says it takes someone that knows what they are doing to find the right points but she feels she has it down. She has worked with latte from the board and he referred me to her. Good News is that she is thinking of expanding this kind of treatment in her offices but needs to train other therapists so she may need some volunteers for them to work on. Free Therapy! And you could help PT's get some experience. Finally she totally agrees with Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol but feels retraining the pelvic muscles through exercises will help recovery last and this is one thing dr. wise doesnt push. I do have bad posture and butt tucking when standing which she feels contributed to problem also slouching while sitting which presses on bottom of pelvic bone. So working on posture , sitting and strengthening core muscles to help recovery. She feels this will help support bladder which could be causing some of my frequency issues, which is as of now resolved. Well gottarun actually on way to see her. Will make donation for Xmas and you guys have happy holiday season and keep your fingers crossed for me because I feel like I am getting better.
Age 32, onset 32 Onset Aug 07- frequency was main problem in the beginning-really bad. Now 1 to 2x per night when frequency flairs up. Sore and tight lower abdominal muscles. Occasional burning after bowel movement and full feeling. What helps: Healthy diet(this is huge for me) Started drinking super greens supplament and almost going totally vegetarian to get body more alkaline, starting Prosta-Q, quercetin/zinc tablet in morning helped frequency problem I believe. Massaging abs and doing stretches helps calm down frequency when it is acting up. Wine or vodka after long day. Flexeral and melatonin at night. Swimming and light weights. .5 of Elavil every other day helps with frequency and healing process. Trying to stay positive and not stressing over this!

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

not the Xmas present I wanted
Well I was rolling along great but day before xmas frequency started to pick up again. Not as bad as when it first started as I can sleep(1-2 times) but every couple hrs in the day been having to go. This got me depressed about situation again and just need to vent. Seeing Pt tommorrow so will see what she can do. I did eat drink and made merry for the holidays last weekend so that could be it but a few drinks has not bothered me over the last month when everything was going well. The other thing is the muscles around bladder feel really tight and inner thighs too. My Pt has been having me do exercises to strengthen lower abdominal muscles and I feel I may have pushed it too much last week. Do you think this is good or bad Idea for recovery? Like I said everything was going really well and I know you guys have said this thing will come and go and some of you guys have had frequency go away for couple months and then come back so that couild be it too. Anyways just feeling depressed because I was doing really well. Hope you guys had good holiday!

Re: not the Xmas present I wanted
Sorry to hear that calguy. I would stay away from any kind of strengthening exercises. I would bet that your abs and groin are plenty strong and they need stretching and relaxation, not strengthening. So yes you probably pushed things a bit too far and you are in a minor flare up. Just concentrate on the things that have helped you improve and it'll pass.
Age: 32 | Symptoms: Twingy pain/muscle spasms in groin area (gone), tingling sensation at tip of penis (has resolved as of now), urinary frequency (resolved as of now), thicker/decreased amount of semen (resolved as of now). Makes better: Stretching, Relaxing pelvic muscles, moment to moment relaxation, not sitting with legs crossed, Elavil, quercetin. Makes worse: Sitting, stress, more than one orgasm/day, constipation, manual labour

Re: not the Xmas present I wanted
Agreed...Lay off the ab work.I bet those muscles are plenty strong. Try not to get to down, this will pass as you recover and it will come and go until it comes less and your recovery is longer.

Just to reiterate what's been said: Don't worry, flare ups are common but they become less severe and shorter lasting as time goes by.

pain in the inside of legs
Well frequency cooled down after flare last week and you guys were right just relax and get back to protocol. Now I have been experiencing some discomfort in the inside of my legs and what I think is the muscles around my bladder. Could be from the work outs I was doing. When I sit I can really feel the discomfort in the both these places, lay down or stand it goes away. At first I was worrying it could be something in my bladder(IC) but no burning and I can feel how tender muscles are when I press on them or rub them so doubt that. Hot bath helps and haven't seen PT in a couple weeks so hopefully there is a trigger point that will help relieve the discomfort. Anyone do experience this and do anything like stretches or have internal work help? Really seeing what my PT is made of this week. Take it easy and HAPP

antidepressants
I may have to break down and take something to take the edge of the frequency. Its not extremely bad but walking around on eggshells just hoping it won't start. I think most of you you have recommended Elavil but I am just scared to get hooked on it as I have a cousin who started taking prozac and has not been able to get off of it. Need to try something as I feel frequency will be my biggest challenge. Seems to wax and wane lately but tired of it and will probably try Elavil on your guys recommendation. It sounded like someone has had great success with some German drug posted early anyone else try that? Also I need to explain to doc how it will help so any advice will help?

Re: antidepressants
I had the same thoughts before taking Elavil. However 10 mg per day(I take 20 mg) is small. I just went off it with no side effects (and the pain increased) due to other medical problems. Am back on it now.

I was on fluoxitine (prozac) for over six months and had no problems coming off it. Very few people do.

Re: antidepressants
CalGuy - frequency was my biggest distressing symptom at the time. However, for the past, erm, 2 months now it has totally gone. In fact, I have completely forgotten I ever had it. Mine came and went for the best part of a year, when it first started it was awful, then it got less "imposing" and eventually it disappeared. I too worry it may come back, but I am not thinking about it daily anymore like I used to. You say you are hoping it won't start, which makes me wonder if you are suffering with it at the moment. If you are not, then personally I wouldn't take anything, but just try and forget about it and get on with things. If it comes back, it comes back, but it will go again, and I found that ignoring it for an hour or so after going, the feeling went until it was non-existent until the next toilet visit.
Age: 33 | Onset Age: 32 Initial Symptoms: Frequent urination Current Symptoms: The odd feeling of frequency but not much else Helped By: Not thinking about it, hot bath, red wine, light exercise, Bowen technique seems to help, getting on with my life Worsened By: catastrophic thinking, worrying things will get worse, feeling depressed, reading websites too often! Work! Sitting in work all day isn't good!! Current Progress : Since 1st Sept 08, no pain!!! :)

Re: antidepressants
I was doing good for about a 1.5 months Gary then my Pt did some abdominal work where she massaged my lower abdominal really hard and I have been sore there ever since. Did push it that same weekend do to holidays with food and drink so not sure what caused frequency to flare back up. It seems now when I sit I can feel pressure around bladder but when I lay down no pressure. So I think this may be muscle related for me. It flared for a couple days then went away now back again for the last 4 days. Seeing PT next week so maybe she can sort me out. I think If I could get my mind of frequency it would help me stop stressing and lead to better recovery. So I thought I would take your advice and give Elavil a try as I dont like bladder control meds and we have discussed them before. I still dont understand how antidepressant will help but trust you guys to give a try. I will keep you posted and let you know how it works. Any major side effects I should worry about?

Re: antidepressants
It's not the antidepressant effect, but the anticholinergic side effects that help with frequency:calguy wrote:I still don't understand how antidepressant will help but trust you guys to give a try. I will keep you posted and let you know how it works. Any major side effects I should worry about?

At the super-low doses that help, significant side effects may be dry mouth and constipation. YMMV.

Cold medicine advice/ helped by
I know this has been discussed before but cannot find posts. Just came down with bad cold and started taking Thera Flu, over the counter stuff. On the back of the bottle says dont take if you are being treated for "enlarged prostate". Is this safe for me to take?
The stuff has also seemed to help frequency a little as I didn't get up at all last night? Could this be Antihistamine??
