Many people find it irritating if purchased as a packeted powder. It's packaged with maltodextrin, a fungal product to which most mold-allergic people are sensitive. Those same people do not react to Splenda (sucralose) in products like commercial drinks. Splenda is supplied to manufacturers in the pure form without the maltodextrin.
Aspartame (Nutrasweet) is a far nastier product. See http://www.aspartamekills.com
