So I got a cytoscopy scheduled this Friday

Post by achamasi »

And I'm trying to decide if I should go through with it. I had initially gone to this Urologist because someone in the office had said that they knew about the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol but after having seen him and talked about the book (without naming it) he gave me the impression that he had absolutely no clue. I'm thinking I should just cancel my appointment and try another doctor, any suggestions?
Age: 24 | Onset Age: 22?? Always had frequency since I can remember I just mostly ignored it. | Symptoms: | Helped By: Relaxation, Internal PT | Worsened By: Frequent Masturbation, Stress

Go for the Cystoscopy

Post by elitynski »

I had a cystoscopy and although, not my most favorite experience, I thought my urologist was very knowledgeable and he was able to look inside the bladder and rule out more severe things that could have been going on.

I would recommend it only if you feel confident in your urologist's abilities. As a result of my cysto the URO diagnosed me with PFD and I am now heading towards some weeks of PT.
Age: 49 | Onset Age: 43 | Symptoms: Some overactive bladder symptoms | Helped By: Hot Baths, relaxation, a little valium, exercise / weight loss | Worsened By: stress, possibly diet, possibly...(fill in the blank)

I would have it done. It's a relatively safe procedure which can rule out a great deal of things.
Age 56: Onset 2006 and bouts on and off since then. See posts for details.

I had it done and as I have said before the peace of mind if it comes back normal is enough to understand you most likely have PFD. (Pelvic floor dysfunction). Like sleeper said it rules out strictures problems with the bladder structure wise. Function wise, that's where a PT comes in and the protocol after you get the good news all is normal.

After that, your done with uros. You have all the tools to get better and you just need a doctor for any scripts like Benzos, Elavil, hypnotics to help you sleep or if you need alpha blockers etc....

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Most urologists do not know about the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol. It doesn't mean he's a bad urologist, especially if you are just seeing him to get cystoscopy or urodynamics.
Started: Spring 2003; high urinary frequency and pain associated with bladder filling; urinary hesitancy; pubic/prostate/perineal discomfort; Helped by: trigger point therapy, Afrin nasal spray, Cymbalta, hydrocodone (small doses), distraction. Makes worse: sex.

Not medical advice. Consult your doctor.

I had one done early on. I went VERY quickly and ruled out any problems in the uretha and bladder. It left a burning sensation for about a day whenever I went to pee, but that's about it.

I've had about 8 or 9 of these done. Partly due to my strictures, and now as a yearly "check" to make sure I don't restricture.

As long as the doc isn't some ham fisted idiot and uses a "flexible" scope it should be fine. The lidocain shot up the penis is a bit uncomfortable, but not bad. The actual scoping is just uncomfortable. The doc might go up into the bladder, which can feel a bit...odd, but again, nothing that can't be done in under 20 minutes in the docs office.

I'd recommend some of the urinary relief pills (Pyridium?) - you can get them at any drug store - they turn your pee orange and really takes away the "peeing razor blade" feeling you get for a bit afterwards.
Age: 31; age at onset: 18; symptoms: perineum pain, joint pain, pain in back, pain on left or right testicle, very bad fatigue, malaise, frequent/urgent urination (good stream though), weak/muted orgasms with symptoms getting worse after orgasm, anxiety, depression, 3 surgeries to repair bad strictures (urethrotomy and urethroplasties).

I just got back from my cystoscopy this morning. I'd been toying with the idea of cancelling it, seeing as my remaining symptoms seem to be entirely muscular, but a few of the guys on here encouraged me to go, just to rule out any problems.

Anyway, it's not too painful... just a bit of discomfort when they squirt the anaesthetic in and a bit of pressure as the camera moves around. I also feel a little sore in the pipes, but it's not particularly painful... like your knee feels after you've scraped it.

Turns out there's nothing amiss down there... everything is perfectly normal. The best bit was having a look inside my own bladder!
Age: 38; Onset: 38; | Symptoms: the famous "golf ball" sensation, irrational feel of needing to urinate, feeling of "fatigue" in pelvic floor, general lack of energy... all symptoms fairly mild and isolated; | Helped By: relaxation, stretching exercises, (possibly) alcohol, hot baths, sleep; | Worsened By: over-exertion (suddenly running without warming up), possibly excessive sedentary work

That's what I thought also having the unside of my bladder looked at and when he shot water in it to stretch it out. I got a clear ok as well.

So now you can go full blown SP knowing this is a muscle/ stress functional issue that can be resolved over time and hard work....Way to go....
