Bike Seat - anyone use it?

Post by Orion »

I'd like to start biking again. Uro said I could - mentioned something about a bike seat that doesn't put pressure on the perinueum (I've had a couple surgeries there).

Has anyone used this seat:

Looks like it might be safe.

I still cycle. stangely enough it doesnt effect me over short distances. Nor in fact does sitting too much if I make sure I control my natural instinct to tense at the moment!

The only problem with a seat like that is a certain loss of stability compared to the normal design.

I have got good experience with my broad gel seat. It has a little deepening in the middle to depower the perineum zone. But more important is gel design to distribute weight equally.

Bike seats

Post by MC »

I also used to do a ton of biking. Mostly mountain biking. Just recently I fixed my old Canondale full suspension up. I looked at that seat and a bunch others that were called "hornless" bike seats. The problem I found is that you lose a lot of stability without having a horn to grip between your legs. I didn't realize just how much I used my legs to support the bike until I tipped the nose way down on my old seat and tried it. It was pretty scary especially standing while going down hills. So bassically if you are a just into it for recreation and stick mostly to roads and sitting down then maybe it would work for you. But if you like mountain biking through trails and standing up a lot it may be very difficult to control your bike and dangerous at high speeds while standing. I just couldn't ride without the horn. So I ended up swapping out my old seat and buying http://www.rei.com/product/736827 this seat from REI. I compared the feel of a lot of seats and this was the softest and had a really deep cutout. It is called a mens Serfas RX. I installed it with the nose angled slightly down so there is little to no perineum pressure. Of course it would be more stable if you left the nose level but it still slightly irritated me. So I made that compromise. So now I still have a horn to grip with my thighs, a cutout for my perineum and tail bone, and quite the cushy seat for my sitbones. It works great for me but everyone's butt is different, lol.

Hope this helps.

Here you can see my Selle Royal City saddle (click on the picture to enlarge). It is available in different sizes, which only differ in broadness. I've got the biggest. And I'm very happy with it.

I like the looks of this one. I am hesitant to get a seat without *any* crotch support (horn) as I'd be worried about support. From what it looks like this seat protects the perinuem completely - which is critically important for me, as I'd have had surgery there for bad strictures (ironically enough from falling on a bicycle bar as a kid) and do not want to damage the urethra at all. I'll probably show this one to my doc to get the OK.

i have worked making deliveries on a bike for a year and a half .. average, probably 3 hours a day on a bike, oftentimes more, 3-4 days a week.. The thing about this I never understood, is that how people dont realize that riding a bike standing up without a seat is just as comfortble as riding with a seat... well maybe not the high-speed bikes but regular bikes. I had my seat twisted to the side so sometimes I could lean on it and the steering handle raised a little bit ..

OK, too lazy to change my signature, but my sympoms have improved significantly, some went away competely. Old sig below.

Age: 27 | Onset Age: 23 | Symptoms: differ from year to year, anal/buttocks pain(especially when moving around/walking), burning when pee every once in a while, muscle tightness after peeing, sometimes but rarely burning after,, but no urgency , i pee about 4-5 times a day. Stomach bloating, hard to pass gas, occasional sharp pain in right side lower abs.

Helped By: alcohol(maybe i am wrong about this one,, helps some symtoms, possibly makes other symptoms worse), water, Beer always cures urethra pains/burning.
| Worsened By: showers, defecation, massage?, stress, winter, early spring, Snapple diet iced tea?.

Makes no difference: sitting(try putting something under back legs of your chair to tilt it slightly), masturbation(2-3 times a day usually),(update, now down to 1-2 times a day), used to ride bike without a seat on for 4 hours some days 3-4 days a week- no problem, spicy foods - no problem, 3-4 cups of black tea a day- no problem
