Healing v symptom control

Post by GP2 »

Hi guys,

I've been doing largely well with my condition over the last couple of months. That despite a very stressful training course and beginning my new job (big anxiety provokers once upon a time).

I do self administered trigger point work now bi-weekly on my abs, perineum and internally. I stretch twice daily and meditate (although not enough).

What I have to ask you opinions on is the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol in comparison to other treatment methods found on this board for example. I have seen lots of evidence of posters who have "cured" themselves without doing the official Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol. Men like TK, Twerges, Richie, Lighting Tree, chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome Dad did a version of the SP if you like. I just wonder what David Wise's view would be on this particularly as he so strongly advocates the paradoxical relaxation techniques learned at his clinic. I notice tha many men dont necessarliy practice daily meditation / relaxation and still recover!

So, unless we practice formal relaxation (the SP version) or even our own version of meditation can we not expect to heal as David Wise discusses. Symptom relief yes, healing no?

My own opinion is that pain relief is more important than full - scale healing and many men have managed this without even doing trigger point work. Others with a diet change, others with phytotherapy, some with psychotherapy. I also think that if a man can deal with stress and anxiety and change some negative lifestyle habits (if he catches this thing early) can reverse the "wind-up" and negate the need for the full SP. Again, there are examples on the SP.

I can see how long term, dedicated meditation / relaxation will hugely benefit us all but I have been here long enough to know that this area is the one that most of us aren't fully committed too  Can we recover well enough without it??

Would love to hear your views

Bottom line for me is if I can keep my anxiety under control and follow that with excersise, stretching, yoga which is a form of meditation and my over all protocol, then I'm on the right path. By doing this, I think I have found my version of SP. I think you have your version of the SP. David wise Himself told me it's what you do at the home with this thing by taking what you learn from SP and applying it to your daily life. That's why the book is there, because it's giving you the tools and resourses to learn more about your self and understand the underlying tension that we all have and how to deal with it and start healing.

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Thanks Carl. I just wonder what David Wise thinks of treatment that isn't exactly modelled on the SP?

I guess symptom relief is of paramount importance. I agree though my protocal is working for me & I'm glad yours is for you!

I dont know what David thinks, but I think you are wrong in your thought that your treatment isn't based on the SP. I think your treatment is, you say you meditate, stretch and do tp release, thats the SP. You just havent been schooled in it. But, in theory you are practicing it.

I know David says the relaxation is the biggest component, and for his recovery it may have been, so its easy to see why he feels that way. But, think about it, this thing is so different for all of us, right? We each have a similar thing (cause), but it manifests itself differently (for instance I dont have urge/frequency). Therefore, what may be the key for one isn't going to be for the other, but it may still play a role.

With that said, I believe for me tp release was the major key, then stretching and then relaxation. I can feel relatively good with just PT and stretching, but if I quit the first two and only did relaxation at this point I think my pelvic muscles would not stay loose given what I like to do; be active, screw my wife, lol, etc.

This is my view. Hollistically its all important, but your key may be different from the next guys.

Yes my treatment is based on the SP but is not the SP in its exact form. I know that my protocol is helping and I'm finding new things all the time.

I note that you yourself Scooby went to the clinic in California and Alprost did the same after improving somewhat through self treatment from the AHIP book alone. Did you feel that you needed to fine tune what you knew Scooby? This is kind of my concern you see!

Ahhhh, yes, definitely, I wasn't doing the relaxation properly, I was fighting the tension while relaxing, and I never was releasing things like my arms/shoulders/forehead.

Also, I was completely missing the boat with my PT because the PTs I saw simply treated the sphincter, so I wasn't getting to the root of the problem, which for me is in the levators running down to the prostate and all the way up to the tailbone.

Without it, Id still be spinning my wheels, but thats not to say you are missing like me, in some respects I was misguided by PTs who were eager to help, but just not knowledgeable enough. Thus, why some on this board have said those are the most dangerous kind to see...and I agree.

Regards,

Thanks Scoob,

Well I treat myself internally with the Theracane. It doesnt bother me! I have found a lot of sore areas / TPs and hope over time that I'll get there. Plus I've done really well at resolving my abdominal TPs (caused largely I believe from the tensing I do when my stomach is in pain from gluten digestion).

Plus I have practised meditation and know of all the pitfalls that David Wise talk of in AHIP3. I know that its not an easy thing to do and how committed and patient you have to be.

All I can do is give myself time and see where I am in perhaps a year

Had a tough week last week where a flair made my mental state completely slip. Alarming because I hadnt had such negative thoughts since last Year. I have read so many times on this forum how flair ups can send us temporarily loopy and I'm living proof!

I'm back off the floor again and back to my old self now. And I'm loving my new job guys although for now my pelvis finds it daunting!
