Contradicting advice?

Post by Glenn »

Hi all, just a few thoughts here.I was reading elsewhere on the net that patients with Interstitial Cystitis are advised to drink as little as possible and to hold the urge to urinate until it subsides,in order to retrain the bladder to hold larger amounts and strengthen the muscle walls.Heres assuming that you know you have I/C and not Prostatitis. In which case if you don't , in the event of having prostatitis you are advised to drink a fair amount of water and not to hold on too long.I read on this forum of some people believing delaying urinating had led to their prostatitis. This may well be very true.Surely though having a full bladder for longer periods would help in that it is distended? I am not insinuating here, just summising.I'll leave it to the experts to answer these questions.I think I have symptoms of I/C more,so just wanted some clarification of the facts. Thanks for any replies,Glenn.

I'm no expert Glenn, and I don't know if I have IC or chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome (or whether they are the same thing), but I tend to go when my body tells me to. Holding it hurts and I've read that this can set up nerve pain.

I'm sure others with more knowledge will comment.

I try to hold it for just a short period. This way I'm relieving more fluid than just small amounts. It seems to help a bit.

I also make sure I fall asleep with an empty bladder.

One of my problems seems to be that I can detect even the smallest amount in the bladder (which is what makes sleeping so difficult). Before I started having the discomfort I experience now I actually had a much higher frequency because of this. As it stands now it's hard to tell if irritation or a genuine need to urinate is causing discomfort in the bladder area. Going to the bathroom only to discover nothing is going to happen gets annoying, so since I have no urgency or leakage I generally just go every 3 or 4 hours and ignore the discomfort inbetween.
