Newbie Time

Post by centralouchie »

Hey guys, I'm new to the board and the condition. Mine flared up shortly after my girlfriend dumped me and I was in the midst of intense triathlon training as well as pushing my limits at weightlifting.

At first, I thought she had given me an STD on the way out. But of course, all was negative and I'd be asymptomatic by now even if I were the Syphilis-Gonorrhoea-Chlamydia poster child by now, which I am not. Doxycycline and Cipro did little to nothing for me.

Anyway, my primary symptom is pain around the urethral opening, sometimes spreading down my frenulum. Quercetin, Valium, cold baths, warm baths, and relaxation all seem to help. It's better than when it started, but it's still around. Occasionally, one of my testicles or the base of my penis is sore, but those are not my usual symptoms. Thinking back on this, I think I've had this all my life to some extent. I spent a year with a horrendous backache during my teen years. I hated school at the time, and I guess that was my inner child's tantrum it threw to get me out of there.

Recently, I tried sitting on a tennis ball. That causes fast symptom relief so I'm looking forward to physical therapy. It worked wonders on my RSI a few years back, though the magic cure for that in my case was plunging my arms into ice water for 10 minutes at a time and working out the trigger points in my upper back, neck, and shoulders.

I suspect my symptoms might be the result of an injury. Days before this hit, I broke 7 miles in a hour at a 3.5% incline on a treadmill. My running friends have all scolded me for pushing myself like that, but the damage is done, and I just need to heal now.

I'm also a type A at work, but hey, I like what I do so I do a lot of it, especially since I'm currently sans romantic partner.

Anyway, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. I'll update as things change.

Hi,

I'm a newbie too. Had similar starting symptoms, during a reslationship which got much worse/noticeable after breakup.

Was a type A or at least B+ now I'm a type F. Have been trying to avoid this thing (except for going to shrinks, was initinally misdiagnosed as a pscyh problem) and am impressed by people making efforts to tackle it.

Yours,

Damien

Hi,

I just read the Best Life Magazine article in the most popular hits section, A really helpful starting point. I really had no idea it was so common, 5-10% of men.

Saw the article too. Lots of guys go through this apparently. You're not alone. My father and my brother went through this as well, but didn't see it as this. My father eventually got better, my brother still deals with it.

Central,

Welcome, your story is not uncommon to me. I was a competitive bodybuilder while trying to juggle the rigors of work and law school. Very driven, tons of physical activity, etc and so forth.

You are right you need to slow it down for a while. Work on yourself in regards to this issue.

Check out AHIP, learn the streches, seek out a PT as the tennis ball thing is a good indicator (I roll around on mine all the time, lol), and keep taking warm baths. I do one in the morning with a 20 min relaxation session to follow, then I'm off to work. In the evening I do some light workout stuff at the gym, followed by bath, streching, 40 min relaxation, then hang with the wifey. Keep it low key for a while.

Continuing along your same path will not help. Trust me, I tried that!

Regards,

Ss

I'm lucky - I live in the bay area. I'm trying to see Tim Sawyer directly and I've resumed my yoga practice. I'm definitely feeling incremental improvement. But yeah, I need to figure out where I'm injured and help it heal. There's a similar issue called a "Sportsman's Hernia" that might be relevant here, but it's just too early to know. I saw 3 urologists, 2 of whom called this correctly while the other assumed it was an infection.

The third in particular brought up A Headache in the Pelvis and he has offered referrals to The Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol so I'm not worried about getting a PT, but I'm not sure whether they'll cover the 6-day seminar.

Central,

Welcome and it really seems you are in the right direction. Keep the positive upbeat approach and do your stretching and hot baths to relax those muscles. Maybe take it easy on the lifting and vigorous workout. The PT work will bring everything to light and give you some right spots to work on.

The sitting on the ball is interesting, I find it helps also.

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

My insurance did not cover my trip to SP, to me that money is long gone, but the effects of what I learned Ill have for a life time. It sucks that I had to do it, but I really look at that experience as something cool and positive.

Dont know if you saw from another post, but my resting hearbeat is down to 58 which I attribute to my daily practice of relaxation. I have never been that low, a high 60, low 70s kind of guy. I was floored when the nurse reported that number recently. That has to be beneficial to a long life. She thought I was a runner, not really, unless chasing a ball. LOL!.

Hi,

Looks like I've got some reading to do. Hi Centralouchie hope I'm not hijacking your page but I wanted to talk a little (hehe) about myself.

I think my biggest problem is just dealing with and accepting the pain. If I can do that it generally becomes less of a big deal, I feel comfortable within myself and my quality of life improves. I've been generally avoiding, blocking, or limiting the physical sensations of pain/discomfort to manageable doses for a very long time and it didn't seem there was any reasonable alternative solution to this.

I found the fact that the pain was transitory or would respond to states of mind the scariest thing, eg if I would describe the symptoms they would become worse or very noticeable, if I focused on problems or if I tried things to fix it then they would become very strong and I could get very depressed. If I ignored them or laughed them off they would be a distant irritant not painful, I'd seem ok but would get mood swings, be generally angry, not enjoy life, find it difficult to maintain focus and tire quickly. The idea that its mental not purely physical was a bitch so I kept going back to the shrinks and thought it was a psych problem though I didn't really believe it. Of course they are all interconnected to a degree but I don't really understand it.

One thing that I would like to talk about I guess, and maybe I should start my own post on it, is the effect that this has on work. In order to maintain a happy state of mind in return I often became quite immobile, risk and stress adverse. I had and have now busy work to do, (another law student haha) and found heavy challenges too daunting and still difficult. I was also frequently very apathetic, why should I bother/exert myself, nobody seems to care or help or be other than angry if they knew there was a problem, not sure this is fixable, what woman that I wanted would want me etc. It was a quality of life thing, doing work didn't really make me happy (although I was obviously happy when it was done and missed being able to enjoy work the way I used to) all I really wanted was sex with a nice girl, feeling normal, being able to enjoy things like exciting situations where you could just go with the flow and exercising again without feeling pain/discomfort or anxiety.

Anyway I kept delaying the finishing of my degree, I'm just finishing it now and the longer I did that the more demoralised I generally would feel. I put all my eggs into being able to deal with life in a non stressed manner to limit the feelings of discomfort/pain so I went to the shrinks a lot, but that probably wasn't a realistic approach. It wasn't directly helpful anyway as they felt uncomfortable talking about physical things. I'm not looking for strategic advise I guess, like the importance of finishing study, but how do you guys deal with the impositions of this on work? I'm a really bad compartmentalizer I like to approach something with full focus. The feeling that there is a problem, which seems more important (or is unresolved) than what I'm currently doing, is a very big distraction.

I guess its the lazy phenomenon which is difficult to work through, ie rest/non stress=healing, pain relief. Work=pain exacerbation and stress/danger. That isn't (prob isn't) accurate with this condition but its a hard one to break.

Aggh stress shouldn't be such a big deal but it makes me freak out now. Not sure I want to talk to some Indian guru though lol. Sex, exercise used to be a big stress relief in the past but I'm generally afraid to do that now. I also feel that my life style in the past was a bit excessive, ie too much sex, exercise and work and anything that takes me back to that way makes me feel out of control. The prost kicked in right when I was at my busiest and most intense. I also feel If I exercise I'll probably beat someone to death lol.

As for attempting to overcome this thing, ie reading doing the exercises, I find it demoralising for some reason and am slow to start. This had been going for a while so I don't have the same naive optimism, bugger! But I always found dealing with problems hard. I guess I want my old life back but I'm not sure if thats a good thing or if I can actually get it. My body let me down and I find it difficult to do physical things blah blah.

Enough whining for one day. If you've read this you're a better man than me Gungha Din. Central seems to be going well (better than me dammit haha)

Yours,

Damien

Thanks

Well, I had the fatalist outlook during my RSI outbreak where doctors were telling me to quit my programming job. That's when I got pissed at the doctors and took matters into my own hands. This time, I saw 6 doctors in the space of 2 months trying to get to the bottom of things as fast as possible.

So I know where I am now, I notice a difference already, and now the hard part is being patient about the remainder of the healing when all I really want to do is go back to being among the living. It's been 3 months since my breakup and I'd like to start dating again but right now, I feel awfully odd letting anyone near my anatomy until it heals up a bit.

If I can't fix this by seeing Tim and doing Yoga and relaxation, you can bet I'll be in on an SP session. But I've always been the DIY type so why stop now?

I can't recommend returning to a semblance of normality enough. Just exercising makes a difference for me. My challenge now is not to push myself like I used to but just let things happen.

Yeah I agree, semblance of normality is crucial. Everything that fucks with that is a hassle.

Dude, my grades did suffer my final year, went from top 10 to 18, which sucked because I graduated cum laude (actually walked that day), but when the final exams came in after we walked/graduated I was .10 away from it. So althoug I wore the purples the day we got our certificates, it was taken from me, pretty cool huh? No it sucked, but what can you do?

In life shit is thrown at all kinds of people, we arent the only ones with a cross to bear. Believe me I hate this shit as much as the rest of you, but you have to at some point grab this thing by the balls and get working on it, and how it will fit into the life you want.

I have had to change a few things, that I certainly dont like, but all in all I dont have a bad life.

Bottom line, its time to suck it up, devise a strategy and get to work on this thing.

Ss

I'm just giving thanks the past few days that I can now walk without having to hold the front of my pants and underwear away from my penis head. That alone has restored some normality to my life.

I'm a little more symptomatic today, but the incredible zinfandel I drank this weekend makes it all worth it.

Ya gotta keep on living or you'll start circling the drain.

Thanks Scooby,

I will. For me the hardest thing is not dealing with the symptoms but getting on with my life. Apparently my folks call me a hypocondriac. Ok that isn't sucking it up but it does suck.
