It sure is. Magnesium Citrate is a powerful laxative, but I think the affects are dose related.
I started mine back up last night after reading this post. I bought some a while back but only took it for a few days (think I was having frequent bowel movements back then). I didn't realize it was good for helping you go to the bathroom as well as muscle spasms. I thought I read somewhere its good to take calcium with magnesium.
Age:33 | Onset Age: 20 | Symptoms: burning urethra after urinating, followed by rush to urinate again, rectal pain after a bowel movement sometimes, frequency. | Helped By: Pyridium and Ativan | Worsened By: stress, sitting and unknown reasons.
First sorry for my lack of knowledge on this topic but I had a few questions and wonder if some of the people who are taking or have tried magnesium could help me. First I took magnesium oxide for about two weeks in march of 2006 on a tip from a health store because at the time I was having trouble with my bowl movements and she said it helps with that. The reason I stopped was just got out of the habit of taking it. The health store also said that taking magnesium glycinate was good for muscle spasms.
QUESTIONS
What type of magnesium are people taking on this forum that have tried it and how many mg's?
Any one taking magnesium oxide?
Any one taking magnesium glycinate?
Also can you combined magnesium oxide and glycinate together?
I've been taking magnesium oxide (500 mg per day) since this thread started. So far I feel a great improvement; normal in fact. That's a word I haven't dare used in a long time. I'm 7 years with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and I think I've burned out the placebo effect. I'm sticking with this.
well I'm going to try it too, since my symptoms are totally related to a spasm in the external sphincter muscle. I'm going to do some research though on dose and whether other supplements like someone else pointed out is necessary.
Ill update.
Age:29 | Onset Age: 25.5 | Symptoms: Initially burning in prostate/perineum, burning in urethra, uncontrollable muscle contraction before urinating, dual ache in groin, left testicle pain, feeling of golf ball in rectum, soarness in rectum, and muscle spasms, now mainly very mild urinary tract inflammation, burning mildly after ejaculation, some days after physical activity involuntary mild muscle contraction before urinating | Helped By: .5 mg of Ativan, Aleve (naproxen), quercetin, alcohol in large quantities (vodka and soda), stretching, walking, internal massage the perineum area and levators. | Worsened By: sitting, weightraining, jogging, coffee, caffeine in general, alcohol bothered me at first, overdoing sex
My chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome started right after six weeks of severe diarrhea and dehydration. My potassium tests were very low during that time and wouldn't come up. Two weeks after going to the emergency room for penis pain, I went back for muscle relaxants because my back seized up for hours. Reading this thread has been a real eye opener for me. I hadn't even connected those events before now. I've gone straight out and bought my magnesium oxide.

Age 64, sudden onset 5/06 during bout of flu, colitis, lung and liver problems. Pain in penis, then moved to rectum. No urinary symptoms. Use Lyrica, Elavil, paxil, Xanax, morphine, vicodin, relaxation, pads for sitting, 100+ PT sessions. Sensitive to gluten, milk protein, soy. I have CFS, anxiety, GERD, Barrett's, colitis, kidney stones, one of which referred pain to penis.
This is interesting, my prostatitis started a week or so after I got the flu in Feb 06 and I got dehydrated and had bad runs as well for a night. I can actually remember @ one point trying to pee and very little came out and it burned. I thought really nothing of it because I had no fluid to really pee out and thought this was part of my flu process. I wonder if this caused a pelvic tightening and irritation on my prostate and then the vicious cycle took over. I would like to know what a good safe start of magnesium would be?? Scooby let us know what you dig up brother... This could be a key missing link to our problem??? Or at least an addition to relaxation and stretching and supplements...

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.
I am still completely impressed by this treatment. It has done wonders for me. I take 500 mg of Mg in the AM and I and basically normal all day. This continues to be the case since I started it in October. I also strated talking one before bed and now have no need to go to the bathroom not even once during the night. If I forget to take my Mag in the AM, I feel it in a few hours. I'll then take one and the symptoms are gone within 20 minutes. Any similar experiences?
I've been on 250 a day for months and it hasn't made a difference in the CPPS. It did help with tremors and twitches from chronic fatigue.

I am new to this forum but have suffered with chronic prostatitis for over 30 years. Needless to say I've tried just about every treatment, some of which have worked pretty well thus far. But a series of unusually stressful siutations have resulted in my being in constant pain for the last 6 months.
I happened to stumble on this thread regarding magnesium today and just started Natural Calm (magnesium citrate--the first magnesium supplement mentioned on this thread). I have been through the placebo effect many times myself but the immediate effects which have been described here seem to be occuring with me, too. Then, as I read on, I noticed that others have been taking magnesium oxide with great success.
Can anyone tell me if there's a significant difference between the two?
Admin comment: I now recommend Magnesium Glycinate because the citrate causes diarrhea (in fact the citrate can be used as laxative).
I take Magnesium citrate from GNC. It's cheap and it works. I can't comment on magnesium oxide, but it may work as well. This continues to work for me and I know it's not the placebo affect. If I drink too much diet Pepsi I'll start hurting. The magnesium works within 20 minutes, but I still try to avoid diet drinks. Still, don't over due it. Just like with potasium, overdoses can cause cardiac arythmias.
Oops! I take magnesium oxide, not citrate. Sorry for the mistake. I can say that the oxide works great. I guess I've never taken the citrate. I don't think there's a big difference.
