Just to say I also really appreciated this post. After a pretty bad flair lately somewhat out of the blue I became a bit disheartened (surprised myself how I let my mental state slip so much). However, the success of the veterans always picks me up & wills me on to somehow gaining from al this in the future! :smile:

P.S. It's always weird how flairs can still affect you badly - you almost forget your own advice!
Age: 29 | Onset Age: 26 | Symptoms: initially severe burning throughout pelvis - much better; muscles spasms all over region, back pain, chronic IBS (much better) | Helped By: Psychotherapy, SP stretches, swimming, accepting the condition (understanding there is treatment); stress/anxiety management; possibly basic quercetin; valerian root, vit B & calc & magn supplements; gluten avoidance & especially dealing with chronic constipation. | Worsened By: stress / anxiety, too much sex; repressed emotions; personality goodist traits. 80% better

GP2,

I know exactly what you mean. Flare ups can really test you in a lot of ways. This is exactly where the Byron Katie work shows incredible promise. About 5 months ago I felt a flare up for a few days. At this time I had an incredible break through doing the Byron Katie work (called Enquiry). Through Enquiry, I was able to get a glimpse of who I would be and how life would feel if I did not have any stressful thoughts while going through the flare up. For me, this was a most incredible experience. The suffering was less than half it would have been with all my usual stressful thoughts -- it is so hard to explain this experience in words, but it was just incredible, so incredible that I could have a flare and not be stressed and still live life somewhat alright. I believe that the stress can create and sustain a flare up, so by taking the stress out we are taking the fuel out of the fire, so to speak.

I swear I have never found anything more powerful for stress reduction and peace than this Byron Katie work (which really just comes from the great Philosophers like Socrates etc..). And I have tried many many self help methods but none work like this stuff.

I agree wholeheartedly. I have practiced Byron Katie's work & found it very helpful too. Particularly for an issue with an ex-girlfriend.

I have come to realize that for men with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome the psycological aspect of a flair up & pain is far worse than the pain itself. Mike (CPPS Dad) said this once & I now know what he meant!

I have come so far in my spiritual development (call it what you may) & I now read so much on this subject I find it fascinating. And yes I do apply it gradaully to my everyday life & reep the rewards. I can now find enjoyment in the most basic of situations for example. I still get bad periods of mental anguish like the last few days (but less frequently) where I think;

"What if I'm not doing enough to stop it getting worse?"
"What if in years to come I have a stressful period it gets much worse?"

I always pull through though & am somewhat stronger after each down period. Its almost like the periods of mental anguish / doubt are part of the recovery process. Maybe even though it seems like we are putting our lives on hold to deal with this when we arrive at the end of the tunnel that is exactly where we should be in our lives. In other words once recovered and through the darkness we are closer to the person we really are. I hope so!

I may pick up the Byron Katie book tonight as I need to work on a few of these "what ifs?" :smile:

I forgot to say that this post was really inspiring to me (in case it wasn't obvious)!

Thans NoMOPain for giving the forum a boost!

Scooby,

I suggest starting with the "Loving What Is" audio version. This is what Dr Wise suggests in his AHIP book, as the audio version allows you to really feel how the process works as opposed to reading the book.

Incidentally, a guy at my work started doing the Enquiry work and has found he is able to get off of his blood pressure medication now !!
