Your lifestyle & discipline

Post by GP2 »

I have come to realize more and more lately that it is harder IMO beat chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome if you dont look beyond trigger points, diet modification, meditation and the standard treatment methods we have here.

Take the last week for example in my case;

I felt happy & good about life on Friday so I went for a drink in my local pub. I invited my brother along & we had a few more drinks. Later on my brother's friend came along & we got pretty drunk

The next day I went to my second job feeling recovered from the night before. I didn't know until I got there that we had a staff do that night. What happened? I got drunk until 5 in the morning!!

Now the cascade effect of all this is - I'm still tired today, I haven't worked as many hours as I would have liked to & I've felt pretty bad!

This kind of scenario has been common in my life for a decade now. And I've come to realize that I lack self-discipline. And what do you require to beat chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome - self-discipline. Without it you may as well not even meditate, go to a PT and certainly attempt the SP.

Suffice to say with my therapist & personally I am working on acquiring self-discipline. It is a valuable tool to have in life & essential in your armoury for beating CPPS!

I think two large ones on the trot would do for me these days regardless of any symptoms! :)

But it's true; if one wants to get better then one has to accept that burning the candle at both ends - particularly with a flamethrower :-D - is a bit of a no no. Which, of course, doesn't mean one can't enjoy oneself, it's just a case of knowing when to pull your head in.

How are your symptoms these days anyway GP?

Yeah foolish. I must say though that generally I drink less than I ever did & I think I just had a blow out for some reason!

I do a second job (bar work) purely to pay for psychotherapy / physio. It won't last long & it is really enjoyable at least

Symptoms are up & down. Good for 80% of the week & maybe a bad couple of days.

I am only getting to Scotland for therapy once a month (5th session due) but I have now purchased a Theracane so am hoping to go solo after clarifying a few issues with Bill Taylor (the physio for those who dont know). I stetch extensively on a daily basis and am really becoming more flexible. Helps with pain levels too!

Stress management / anxiety relief has helped immensely though. I am a much improved perosn in thst area. Psycotherapy has helped but it is only a tool. You must work at it yourself!

I have been off wheat/gluten largely since the New Year and I really believe that this may be a big factor for me

Thanks

Greg

Greg,

I find a binger every once in a while to be therapeutic to me at least. I do take prelief while drinking due to that fact the booze is acidic and can irritate already irritated tissue. However, the buzz is a relief and usually I see a considerable abatement of symptoms for the days to follow. However, I dont drink back to back anymore, really havent since my college days.

I try to stick to vodka/soda with a lime and prelief, mixed in with some water through the night to keep me flushed, usually doesnt aggravate symptoms at all.

Every once in a while these nights are good IMO.

Regards,

Ss

Ya my choice drink is grey goose vodka, with tonic and lime, but I have not had one in almost 1 year. Last March 2006 was the last time I had one when this thing hit me. I have had a few beers and sake but don't really like beer. I think it's time to have one soon, since my progress has much improved. That's for a different post. Regards, Carl...

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

pure vodka and soda is the best IMO. Vodka is less harsh than beer, beer really irritated me when this thing first strated.

Tonic contains a ton of sugar, soda is just carbonated water. High amounts of sugar bothered me at first, too.

Lime or lemon actually converts to a base within our bodies so I squirt generous amounts in my acidic alcoholic drink. Then I take 2 prelief whith each.

Doesnt bother me in the bit.

Lol. I like soda.

One thing you should keep in mind with your therapist is that the best self discipline comes from being true to yourself.

My point is that if you want to follow the SP, fighting against too many parts of yourself will only make things worse. Its better to get to the underlying reasons you'd rather be drinking, and then build up a new perspective on your goals to get them done.

In other ways, find a way to make your inner drinking buddy work with you, rather than fight it all the way to work, cause that, my friend, will cause massive butt pain ! :)

And hang in there, I went for a year with the 5 days good, 2 days bad wave. The goal is to make that wavelength get longer and longer....

* Age:33 Onset: February 2004.
* 99.9% IMPROVEMENT in 2.5 Years with the first year being the really hard part
* Current Symptoms: Mild irritation of perineal muscles on occasion. Relieved for days at a time by a specific stretch (see below).
* Initial Symptoms: Terrible penile, urethral, rectal, and perineal burning/aching with addition afferent sensations.
* Current Treatments: Deep stretching of the legs and pelvis. Most effective: Deep psoas and levitar ani stretch using the first phase of the "pigeon pose" from Yoga. When a deep pulling is felt in the middle of the pelvis next to the upper rectum, symptoms are completely alleviated for several days.
* Past Treatments Hyperprotection of the perineum for 1.7 years, Walking, Rectal biofeedback, Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, Conditioned deep relaxation practice, Men's Multi-Vitamin and an Extra B-complex pill, all seemed to help.

thanks for th ereplies guys

Lightning - You are talking about supression of parts of the self; the adult/parent/child balance right?

I believe like yourself that by denying and suppressing parts of ourselves (for example many of us are not designed for the cut-throat world of business & are in fact very sensitive men) we can exacerbate our pelvic pain to a large extent. In fact it has been a causal factor of chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome in myself - preventing a certain part of me from showing itself - a stubborn, more selfish, independent Greg as opposed to nice guy, play the game, stay calm Greg :-|

Does this scenario fit any of you guys?

It is slowly changing for me and as you say the Greg inside who needs to play should never be prevented from doing so. He had enough of that as a kid!!

I think that is part of it. The good thing is that part of what is holding you 'inside' is fear of who you are without self control. Its not that different from who you already are, most likely.

The other thing is, avoid lots of liquids at night. You don't want to be holding lots of pee in your bladder while you sleep/are passed out.

Thanks LT

You're right - I have noticed increased urethral burning pain when I wake up if my bladder is full. I'll be careful of that.

Do you mean that you believe I may be scared of "unleashing" this part of myself that I think is somehow dangerous if it isn't controlled? Maybe what I have to really say & do may upset others or I perceive it may upset / unsettle others so I tow the line & suppress it instead?
