Torn discs?

Post by BG0013 »

I went to see a pm doctor in NYC last month. I brought copies of my MRI's with me, and he said I had a couple of torn discs (this is the first doctor who says he has seen anything). He said he can inject them, and it may help me. He says that they may be causing my lower back pain and pain in the testicles? Any thoughts on this? Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Age 21.. | Symptoms: Extreme discomfort in bladder, and lower abdomen.. To the point that I can't sit still, and sleep, can't do anything.. The only that will help is getting into the bath... Urinary frequency, Urinary hesitancy, sometimes taking a few minutes to get just a little bit out.. Sometimes lower back pain when I lay down at night.. Never have the golf ball feeling everybody talks about, and never have a problem sitting down.. Helps: Hot baths, Xanax (but makes me extremely tired), stretching (it seems like only sometimes), pain killers (ex: Percocet, but if I take them, they end up making me worse the next days following, probably due to the urinary retention they cause).. Makes worse: Stress is the main main thing, caffeine and spicy foods too, but not really a whole whole lot.. only a moderate amount..

Damaged discs can release inflammatory chemicals that may irritate the nerve roots as they exit the spinal column. Typically this causes back and leg pain. I'd try ice packs and back exercises before submitting to spinal injections or any disc coagulating procedure. Start conservatively, is my advice.

Watch out for surgeons. Many of them suggest the most lucrative path (for them) as a first choice.

It is actually the Pain Dr himself that does the injections, right there in his little office which scared me a little bit. It was only my 2nd visit ever seeing him, and brought my MRI with me (as he requested), and after looking at it, he was beleive it or not ready to do the injections right than and there. I than told him that I didn't have anyone to drive me home (because he said they put you under local anastesia), and that I wanted to post it on this board first.

Thanks for the help Webslave, BTW if the procedure doesn't help, can it hurt me?

Yes it can. I faced the same question myself a few years ago and was horrified to find that there are some big drawbacks (Google them separately, this is not the place for an in-depth discussion):

BG,

Have you looked into trigger point treatment for your back? Have you heard of the Trigger Point Manual by Clair Davies? He argues that discs are rarely the problem and that in fact many people have dics problems on examination who dont suffer any pain. Trigger points could very well be causing your pain & not the torn disks!

Please look into it. There loads of resources on the net, such as "Trigger points: diagnosis & management" David J. Alvarez
