I will deffinetly be continuing the fiber!!
Fibre is the way forward. Constipation just complicates matters. I'm on Senokot Hi-Fibre, twice daily

For constipation, try:

Benefiber tablets at night
Natural Calm powder (magnesium), also at night,
and VSL #3 (http://www.vsl3.com)

plus, if need be, also try Activa yogurt (found in the supermarket).

I had bad constipation for a long time -- even before CPPS. (I think they're related for me). But i've beaten the constipation with those things.

If you do all those things -- none of which is that unpleasant or at all time consuming or fattening -- I'm sure your constipation problems will go.

p.s.: One caveat. With fiber, one needs to drink enough water a day, or the fiber can actually make the constipation worse. ....

Have you tried magnesium supplements for constipation? It's the reason for Milk of Magnesia. My understanding is that you can up the dose until they work. Excess is just excreted. It's worked for me. The magnesium is good for muscles, too.
I am not a doctor too!
Age 64, sudden onset 5/06 during bout of flu, colitis, lung and liver problems. Pain in penis, then moved to rectum. No urinary symptoms. Use Lyrica, Elavil, paxil, Xanax, morphine, vicodin, relaxation, pads for sitting, 100+ PT sessions. Sensitive to gluten, milk protein, soy. I have CFS, anxiety, GERD, Barrett's, colitis, kidney stones, one of which referred pain to penis.

Urethral sphincter Spasms ?

Post by GARYS »

I have always complained about urethral burning after urinating, but I am wondering now if this is more of an irritation from using these muscles. Is it possible that after I urinate my urethral sphincter is spasming and giving me this burning/irritation feeling? The reason I ask is because for a long time now it feels like my urethra fills back up with urine and my bladder starts to feel full again. I wait a little while and go again and it always seems to be a large amount. Getting ready to start Atarax and was wondering if one of the meds that increase your stream (alpha blocker) would help. I do think I urinate a average amount with a good stream though. One other thing that has been bothering me lately is a lot of erections, mainly in the morning that have nothing to due with wanting to be sexual, or could it mean that I am not having sex enough (roughly every ten days) Thanks
Age:33 | Onset Age: 20 | Symptoms: burning urethra after urinating, followed by rush to urinate again, rectal pain after a bowel movement sometimes, frequency. | Helped By: Pyridium and Ativan | Worsened By: stress, sitting and unknown reasons.

I tried Milk of Magnesia -- it works, but you have to be very careful with it; too much and it gives you diarrhoea, and then it's hard to find the balance you need. It can throw you off for a while.

Again -- and I really have some experience with this problem -- I'd try:

Benefiber tablets at night
Natural Calm powder (which IS magnesium -- but not too much), also taken at night,
and VSL #3 (http://www.vsl3.com)

plus, if need be, also try Activa yogurt (found in the supermarket).

This WILL work with constipation, and not lead to diarrhoea.

The Nature's Calm powder is found in most vitamin stores and at http://www.petergillham.com/
It's also supposed to calm your muscles. (I don't know about that....)

I take 400mg of Solgar Magnesium Citrate, but I didn't realise it helped constipation.

It's worth a try. I find that whenever I've tried meds which seem to constrict my flow (e.g. Lyrica) I get burning at the tip.

That sounds like a good sign to me. Is it before you get up for your first urination?

I mostly agree, but if you're already using VSL#3, the Activa won't add much. It would be like putting a garden hose next to a fire hose.
Age: 32 | Symptoms: Twingy pain/muscle spasms in groin area (gone), tingling sensation at tip of penis (has resolved as of now), urinary frequency (resolved as of now), thicker/decreased amount of semen (resolved as of now). Makes worse: Sitting, stress, more than one orgasm/day, constipation, manual labour

Hi everyone: Just a couple of thoughts: I have been using Celexa for years and I don't recall any side effects with its use (maybe a little sleepiness, but that could have to do with the late nights). I'm supposed to take 40mgs. a day, but instead of getting the pharmacist to give me 40mg. tablets, I have him fill the Rx with 20mg. tabs. That way I can take 20mgs. a day most of the time, but if I'm getting a bit depressed over this thing (which is seldom these days), I can boost the dosage to 40mgs. It works well. And it has my MD's approval.
On the subject of laxatives, it is well understood that fibre is the way to go if at all possible. The bowels can get into the habit of receiving laxatives if they are used over the long term and then you have to wean yourself off them. I go to a health food store where it is possible to find cereals that are higher in fibre than you will find in the grocery stores. I also happen to like apples and eat three a day. You can't overdose on apples, so far as I know, and I do have perfect bowel movements (that's not a claim I would make anywhere other than this board).
Age: 71; age at onset: 65; symptoms: initially rectal spasms; currently anal pain, pereneal pain, buttock pain; all pain on the right side; early diagnosis: chronic non bacterial prostatitis; treatments 4 long courses of antibiotics, accupuncture, naturopathy; current treatments: gabapentin, terasozin, Celeza, PT.

I've never been able to tolerate antidepressants.... I've always felt like there's a cloud in my head and all I want to do is sleep... there are many natural alternatives that are also worth considering... my brother, who is a naturopath, has actually written a book on treating mental health via naturopathy... to combat constipation, I agree with Howden about eating lots of fruit.... also a dose a of greens 3x a day can get things moving quite nicely.....

Some people have more side effects than others with this stuff.

With Effexor, I definitely had constipation, a kind of 'light headed fealing' dry mouth, and constipation. This lasted about a month and a half until it faded to the point where I stopped noticing.

However, the constipation can be fairly persistent, so I would say guess that you should talk to your doctor about that if it is bothering you.

This is a Layperson's advise, as usual.

This is not medical advice, and I am NOT a doctor of medicine or a related field.
* Age:33 Onset: February 2004.
* 99.9% IMPROVEMENT in 2.5 Years with the first year being the really hard part
* Current Symptoms: Mild irritation of perineal muscles on occasion. Relieved for days at a time by a specific stretch (see below).
* Initial Symptoms: Terrible penile, urethral, rectal, and perineal burning/aching with addition afferent sensations.
* Current Treatments: Deep stretching of the legs and pelvis. Most effective: Deep psoas and levitar ani stretch using the first phase of the "pigeon pose" from Yoga. When a deep pulling is felt in the middle of the pelvis next to the upper rectum, symptoms are completely alleviated for several days.
* Past Treatments Hyperprotection of the perineum for 1.7 years, Walking, Rectal biofeedback, Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, Conditioned deep relaxation practice, Men's Multi-Vitamin and an Extra B-complex pill, all seemed to help.

How Long to get the full effect from Atarax?

Post by GARYS »

I started Atarax 2 weeks a go 25mgs and I'm pretty sure it was helping a little and I bumped it to 50 and had another good few days. Unfortunately I'm thinking its not helping that much anymore in this short amount of time. How long should it be in your system to see the benefits (if your going to have any? and I have no problems w/ side effects so is it possible that I need to be at least 75 to 100 mgs to get better results? I have read that section about people not reaching the recommended 50 to 75mgs. I'm very excited about taking this since things seemed better for a short time, but afraid of getting my hopes up. Is there anything else to take to compliment the Atarax? Thanks

Atarax (hydroxyzine, Vistaril) is an antihistamine with anti-anxiety effects. I would persist for a few months (4-5) before deciding it does not work. For example, alpha-blockers only help, if they are going to help, if used for 3+ months.
