Could the flare up be from the sickness, the Effexor or all the stress (or maybe all)?
Difficult one to call so I can understand your anxiety. It does sound like you've been overdoing it a bit.

My own experience with Efexor was that it made me more frequent (I believe that frequency is one of the listed side-effects and I think that Dr. Dimitralov once commented that this was due to the drug affecting neurotransmitters which are active in the bladder, like noradrenaline).

Personally, I wouldn't start two new meds at the same time as I wouldn't be able to gauge their effects.

I really feel for you mate - I'm going through a similar flare up/trying new meds scenario myself.

It's impossible to determine what caused your flare, because you have so much going on at once (stress from the holidays, 6 beers in one night, new med started, etc.). I would wait for things to settle down before adding yet another new medication to the mix. BTW, everyone reacts differently to SNRIs, but I have no problems taking Effexor.

I called the doctor on Friday to ask if the sickness and dizziness was something going around or maybe the Effexor ( I have taken Effexor in the past but only after switching from a different antidepressant almost immediately) this time I had been off all for a few months. She advised me to start taking the starting dose every other day for the first week. My head still feels funny but not as bad. I really want to give the at Atarax a try since I have never tried an antihistamine and I am really hopeful it could help. The other day when I posted I was really having a terrible time, I was home alone with nothing to do but think about the pain and with the sickness I actually was trembling as I stood over the toilet to urinate which of course caused more pain along with the thoughts of its back the same as when it started and then comes the thought of not being able to work, losing everything and going insane. I called a psychiatrist because I'm pretty sure more than half my battle is nerves and anxiety. I even came across a pain clinic that said they treat pelvic pain but when I called I asked if they treated chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome she was confused so I mentioned prostatitis and urethritis and they said to see a urologist, that was the icing on the cake other than they dont see anyone w/ out insurance. Wish I was in California!!! One other thing I have been wondering lately is would an alpha blocker do anything for this spasming I get after urinating in what I believe is my urethral sphincter or is ther anything that would? Benzos dont do it. Afetr I urinate other than the burning I feel like the muscle that relaxes to let urine come out spasms afterwards and give me sudden rushes feeling like urine is entering the urethra like the feeling you get when you have to urinate? What about one of the meds for overactive bladder even though I feel it in my urethra.
Age:33 | Onset Age: 20 | Symptoms: burning urethra after urinating, followed by rush to urinate again, rectal pain after a bowel movement sometimes, frequency. | Helped By: Pyridium and Ativan | Worsened By: stress, sitting and unknown reasons.

We've all been there, mate. I completely freaked out on Thursday - thinking catastrophically about work and life in general.

I can't comment on your symptoms because I've never had them, but I find Xatral (Uroxatral in the US) very helpful for relaxing the relevant area to help me urinate. I've also been on Baclofen - which didn't really help - and more recently Urispas - which wasn't for me. I guess with this thing and meds it's trial and error.

I hope you get to relax a bit over the weekend :-D

Cheers,

Richard

Some people said it made things worse, could it be permanetly made worse by taking them?
I tried Hydroxizine a few years back and it constricted my flow a little, but only until it wore off. It's not my experience that antihistamines caused irreversible side effects. Plus my wife sometimes takes it for mild anxiety and she's fine.

Also I have been taking Mirtazapine for some time (which I believe has really helped as a more tolerable Elavil substitute) which has strong anti-histamine properties. So it's very much down to the individual.

Thanks for the response Richard, in your case do you think the antihistamine is helping? I havent been able to start mine yet on the advise of someonre else and my own instinct since I have just recently started Effexor and had been sick. Hope its one of those things that I havent tried yet that helps!!

I think you're right not to start the antihistamine at the same time as the Efexor. You need to be able to gauge which med has what effect.

I do think Mirtazapine (Remeron) has helped. Judging by others' experiences with antihistamines, I can only imagine that Mirtazipine's H1 blocking effect is a component in my success with it.

There is also evidence that mirtazapine can be used to treat panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and pruritus. Mirtazapine has been reported to be effective in the prophylactic treatment of chronic tension headache. More:

Good link. I've recently increased my dose from 15mg to 30mg, which appears to have stemmed my current flare.

Side effects from antidepressants?

Post by GARYS »

I have been taking Effexor for about 2 weeks and the side effects I'm having are making me consider stopping. (very tired all the time, dizzy, blurred vision, and constipation) Whats the normal lenght of time for side effects to ware off? I was pretty depressed when I got on it so I dont really want to stop, but I'm not sure if the side effects are worth staying on this one or if I should try a different one. I really want them to stop before I try a perscription I was given for Atarax. Thanks

To be honest I'm not sure how long you should give an SSRI a chance before you try something else. I do know that many people have to try a number of them before they find one that works best with the fewest side effects. There are many different ones out there, as you know.
Age: 32 | Symptoms: Twingy pain/muscle spasms in groin area (gone), tingling sensation at tip of penis (has resolved as of now), urinary frequency (resolved as of now), thicker/decreased amount of semen (resolved as of now). Makes better: Stretching, Relaxing pelvic muscles, moment to moment relaxation, not sitting with legs crossed, Elavil, quercetin. Makes worse: Sitting, stress, more than one orgasm/day, constipation, manual labour

Fluoxitine works fine for me. No noticeable side effects at all.
Age 56: Onset 2006 and bouts on and off since then. See posts for details.

You've started and stopped Effexor before. What has been the longest amount of time you've been on it? Do you notice an improvement in your depression/anxiety when you're taking it? Do you experience any sexual side effects from it?

The last time I was taking Effexor was about a year ago, but when I started taking it I switched from another one straight to Effexor with no time inbetween. In my doctors notes she has down that I felt I was doing well enough to and wanted to stop taking it. I do remember it was hard to come off of. I didn't have side effects like this but like I said I was already taking another one and just switched over. I think its helping with the depression a little but these side effects are pretty bad. I can deal with them if I know they will pass. I havent been up for any "sexual relations" since I started Effexor, hopefully everything still works. Its tough to get into the mood when you feel like your in outer space and to top that off I went five days w/ out a bowel movement. I had some fiber last night and was able to go today. I will deffinetly be continuing the fiber!!
Thanks
