HPA Axis dysfunction

Post by Rufus »

Has anyone been tested for any type of dysfunction in the endocrine system?
I've read an article by J Curtis Nickel, a urologist who has suggested that the HPA-axis may not be releasing cortisol properly which regulates the "flight or fight" syndrome.

Aside from the normal hell I'm going through, at times I just don't feel right in the head.

This could be from depression as a result of being in pain for over a year or maybe something else is going on.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Age:37 | Onset Age: 35 | Symptoms: pain in testicles that comes and goes that also switches sides-trying to find a pattern as to "why" this happens/Rectal Burn at the 6 O'clock position at my anus which tends to flare around the periphery of my anus typically after defication but no perineum pain-no "golf ball" pain. Pain in testicles worsens as I sit but not always...Pain is not always present but depresses me. Pain used to be at a very high level but has subsided in time to a low level but has not gone away. Pain used to flare after sex but not as much as before although it still like playing russian roulette./
/Lack of SleepHelped By: I haven't found anything that has helped to my knowledge. Tried many many sessions of PT, accupuncture and chiropractic care but still have not found steady relief that takes me back to a pre CPPS state.

CFS is associated with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and HPA-axis dysfunction is linked to CFS. Join the dots.
Hypothalamic-Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) Axis

Multiple laboratory studies have suggested that the central nervous system may have an important role in CFS. Physical or emotional stress, which is commonly reported as a pre-onset condition in CFS patients, activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, or HPA axis, leading to increased release of cortisol and other hormones. Cortisol and corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), which are also produced during the activation of the HPA axis, influence the immune system and many other body systems. They may also affect several aspects of behavior.
Personally, I intuitively feel that a form of adrenal exhaustion occurs when you are stressed for too long. Eventually cortisol drops to abnormally low levels, and inflammation increases, since cortisol suppresses inflammation.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

"Aside from the normal hell I'm going through, at times I just don't feel right in the head." Rufus, I don't even know where to start. I think I'll tatoo that on my forehead.

I just had my cortisol tested last week and it was fine, but I'm pretty sure I've had CFS since a flu in April that hasn't ever gone away, and my doctors agree.

One of the worst aspects of CFS is the brain fog. When my mind isn't functioning well, I become much more emotional. My emotion of choice has always been anxiety in all it's forms, but I'm learning a bit about what depression feels like too.

I wish I could explain it all, but with the brain fog I don't retain enough of the research I'm doing on CFS. Of course, it would help if anyone really understood what is going on. My favorite theories run to neurology and immunology problems.
I am not a doctor too!
Age 64, sudden onset 5/06 during bout of flu, colitis, lung and liver problems. Pain in penis, then moved to rectum. No urinary symptoms. Use Lyrica, Elavil, paxil, Xanax, morphine, vicodin, relaxation, pads for sitting, 100+ PT sessions. Sensitive to gluten, milk protein, soy. I have CFS, anxiety, GERD, Barrett's, colitis, kidney stones, one of which referred pain to penis.
