Muscle spasms/ fluttering?

Post by GARYS »

I have a new problem that I was hoping someone could shed some light on. Lately I have actually been able to feel something spasming (almost feels more like a fluttering) inside about where the prostate or one of the sphincters are located. It feels like the muscle that spasms when you have an orgasm. It doesn't hurt pain wise, but lying down at night or sitting still I can really feel this and its starting to drive me crazy. It feels the same as when you can feel a muscle start spasming in your arm and you try looking to see if you can actually see it moving. Does anyone know of a good stretch for this spot or how to stop it.
Thanks
Age:33 | Onset Age: 20 | Symptoms: burning urethra after urinating, followed by rush to urinate again, rectal pain after a bowel movement sometimes, frequency. | Helped By: Pyridium and Ativan | Worsened By: stress, sitting and unknown reasons.

I actually have the same thing sometimes, including today. Just try to relax and not let it bother you. A hot shower or bath may help. Some use Flexeril or a benzo.
Age: 32 | Symptoms: Twingy pain/muscle spasms in groin area (gone), tingling sensation at tip of penis (has resolved as of now), urinary frequency (resolved as of now), thicker/decreased amount of semen (resolved as of now). Makes better: Stretching, Relaxing pelvic muscles, moment to moment relaxation, not sitting with legs crossed, Elavil, quercetin. Makes worse: Sitting, stress, more than one orgasm/day, constipation, manual labour

Every time I had this symptom it was related to trigger points. When the relevant one was treated, the fluttering stopped.
This is not Medical advice - Consult your Doctor!

Age:39. Age at onset:31. Symptoms prior to treatment: Golf ball in rectum, severe urinary frequency (2-3x/hr; 5-10x/night); weak stream; painful ejaculation; coccygeal pain; tip of penis pain; general pelvic pain on left; testicular pain; supra-pubic pain. Current | Symptoms: Urinary frequency 1x every 2-3 hrs and 1-2 x a night; mild pelvic pain on left hand side (all symptoms still improving!)
Helped by: Trigger point release; avoiding exercise; pelvic floor relaxation; Neurontin decreased bladder sensitivity somewhat. Worsened by: Exercise; frequent ejaculation; ibuprofen irritates bladder. Made no difference: Diet; biofeedback; quercetin; Steroid anti-inflammatories; Elavil.

****UPDATE*** I am now able to sit again at work all day, and can perform moderate aerobic exersise again for the first time in 8 years!!!

Exactly as the posters above said.

Same symptom. It went away with time. It was mostly episodic. When it happened, it was a dancing show down there. When they were calm, they were calm.

You might be talking about your bulborethral muscle or one of thr transverse perieneals. I was quite dismayed when this first happened, as the pain that day was awful, and I had to stand in line for several hours at a post 9/11 post office in Brooklyn. (not a fun memory)

Anyways, this will improve when the muscles and nerves are less irritated. I no longer get this symptom there.

(Although, occasionally my gluteals still do this.)

This is not medical advice, and I am NOT a doctor of medicine or a related field.
* Age:33 Onset: February 2004.
* 99.9% IMPROVEMENT in 2.5 Years with the first year being the really hard part
* Current Symptoms: Mild irritation of perineal muscles on occasion. Relieved for days at a time by a specific stretch (see below).
* Initial Symptoms: Terrible penile, urethral, rectal, and perineal burning/aching with addition afferent sensations.
* Current Treatments: Deep stretching of the legs and pelvis. Most effective: Deep psoas and levitar ani stretch using the first phase of the "pigeon pose" from Yoga. When a deep pulling is felt in the middle of the pelvis next to the upper rectum, symptoms are completely alleviated for several days.
* Past Treatments Hyperprotection of the perineum for 1.7 years, Walking, Rectal biofeedback, Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, Conditioned deep relaxation practice, Men's Multi-Vitamin and an Extra B-complex pill, all seemed to help.

Valium, flexeril

Post by gifford »

I see from this site that neither valium or Flexeril is recommended for daily , long term use. (I have been on 5mg-10mg/day for 9 months now Also I have been taking a Flexeril for many months also every 2-3 days. If both of these are bad for long term daily use, what is an alternative?

Gifford,

The alternative is embracing AHIP fully. You might want to talk to you doc about decreasing the doses and weaning off. Then get down to days where you are only taking every other, etc and so forth. Only after 3 mos of taking 1mg three times daily of Ativan I was hooked. Instinctively, I began breaking the tabs in half, then taking only two, then one etc and so forth. I didn't know it, but if you cease Ativan all at once it can cause seizures. Speak to your doc.

If you aren't doing AHIP I would start. Its taken me 7 mos to embrace it fully, meaning relaxation, stretching (though the ones in the book weren't enough, I do yoga), and internal and external massage of trouble areas. I do all together twice daily, once in morning, yes I have to get up an hour earlier and at night first thing upon returning from work. And it is tough work, but I'm determined to get over this.

I hope this helped a bit.

How did you know you were "hooked"? What were your symptoms?
Did you have seizures?
I have cut off valium completely for a day or so. Had no ill effects that I could tell.
No emotional or physical "need" that I was aware of.. Just more pain.

gary,

I had the same symptom but in a different spot (lower abdomen close to pelvic bone). This did not hurt for me either and the muscle could jump nearly a thousand times in a given day. I have mentioned this to doctors and they have sort of brushed it off and given me a standard protocol of exercises to do which didn't include the muscle spasming. Lately I have come to realize that this was my body telling me something. The muscle is jumping because it wants my attention obviously. It probably wants some sort of stretching and exercise and maybe a massage or two and a bed time story. Sorry I don't have a solution because I have only done the standard protocol the doctors gave me. This site seems to mention a lot about yoga which looks promising. My spasming did go away, came back and went away again. I have not had it in about a year or so, but I have not forgotten that this may be a important clue to my cure.

If you havent done it yet, try some kegels. I very much doubt these muscles will continue to spasm after you give them a workout, if you are able to target them.
Age: 26 | Onset Age: 20 | Symptoms: Used to be pain around the base of the penis, now I have golf ball in rectum feeling that can be very painful. | Helped By: kegal exercise/biofeedback (fixed ejaculation pain), antiinflamatory drugs, warm baths (intermediate term relief), hamstring stretching (very short term relief), the biggest being stress management | Worsened By: Stress, Standing for long periods, ejaculating used to make it worse, but not anymore

I think I'm having this very same problem. It only happens when I lay down to go to bed though. Although this is the worst cause you can't fall asleep when you keep having spasms disturbing you every minute.

I knew I was hooked for two reasons.

When I tried to sleep at night I had this weird feeling, like I was outside my body, or something, hard to explain, but it kept me WIDE awake. I would take a half dose, it would go away and I could sleep. Not good.

I also felt very anxious almost like on speed when I started dropping my doses, though this subsided relatively quickly.

Luckily I'm not an addictive personality, and I hate taking foreign medicines, so I weaned off fairly easy.

Those fasciculations can be a sign of something serious, so show them to your doctor if you can.

On the other hand, I had them, and they eventually went away. What is really important is that with CPPS, things down there get irritated, and many of us experience these muscle twitch storms.

This site discusses some of the benign and less benign causes of muscle twitching.

Notice that myopathy, that is, muscle pain and irritation, can cause these. But so can nerve damage or muscle and nerve diseases. That's why its important to see your doctor. But be aware that there are benign cases of this condition as well, and that this occurs with generalized CPPS. I had it.

In my experience, do the things that will reduce anxiety, physical muscle tension, and nerve irritation, and consult your doctor.

This is not medical advice, and I am NOT a doctor of medicine or a related field.

Mine just started this week, as I read A HEADACHE IN THE PELVIS, I have been trying moment to moment relaxion, keeping my pelvic muscles relaxed. My spasms are these muscles involuntarily clinching back up. I can't go to sleep unless I'm clinched. This doesn't seem normal...is it?

I actually had this, and you could probably find posts about it. At the very beginning if I tried to relax the floor, the muscles around the bladder would actually tighten or spasm. Then I would also get spasms at night as the anal sphincter relaxed where it would tighten again to where it "felt" normal. Of course normal had become the tightened phase. I have worked through much of it with internal massage and stretching.

I do agree get checked out, but this was the case for many of us at the very beginning of this conditions.

Good Luck!
