how do trigger points feel when you touch them?

Post by jj77 »

I apologize if I'll explain myself badly, but English is not my mother language.

Anyway, when I touch my anal sphincter I find many strange "things" over it. They feel like granulous spots of different shapes - some are longer, some are just little spots - and if I touch them I get a clear discomfort, even if it's not at all like the "jumps" I hear from people who have been at Dr. Wise's clinics. Obviously I may touch them in a wrong way, and I'd jump too if the "things" are touched energetically. Who knows. Oh, and another thing, the spots don't seem to be bounded to the muscle, they have to be chased by the finger otherwise they can move. Is it because they are over a superficial band of muscle? Sorry if my questions may seem pedestrian.

Any thoughts? If these things are suspected to be trigger points, I'll be in Sebastopol no later than September... :icon11:

The external sphincter has crenelations normally. These feel like lumps. Lumps that move around could also be veins. It all sounds normal.

My wife has described trigger points like "hard peas". I'm not sure if her description is good, or if she was hitting the right spots. Many of those spots, however, produced a lot of pain. So those are the areas we worked on.

Unfortunately the pain is not normal... :(
If I touch the internal sphincter I get a considerable amount of pain, especially in the presence of those lumps. It's really strange.

Sincerely, I truly hope to find some TPs, it would mean that there's hope.

trigger points in the anal sphincter can be excruciating...they can create all kinds of pain when palpated, like stinging and burning and throbbing; it can make you feel like you are doing something wrong, i.e., it can make you think that it is not trigger points you are pressing on.
in my own experience, I can tell you that you absolutely have trigger points in the sphincter if it is painful to press on and massage the sphincter. after many, many sessions of continuously treating the sphincter and the muscles just inside the pelvic floor, I no long can produce any pain when I conduct deep massage on the sphincter.
simply put, a normal sphincter without trigger points/restriction can be palpated and stretch without producing actual pain. as described in AHIP, I often will do a little stretching on the sphincter when I'm in a hot shower; I don't produce any pain anymore, it is free of trigger points, but I just stretch it like I would my hamstrings to maintain my recovery and allow the tissue to be free and open and supple. again, however, it took me a long time and a lot of repetitive treatment. for anyone working on the sphincter and internally on themselves, you have be patient and methodical about it, and know that it is okay to conduct deep but gentle pressure on painful areas. you may even get a little blood (sometimes you will come across a hemmoroid that will produce a little blood when you massage it; as D. Wise has written about on his website, I found that trigger point massage on my sphincter resolved both my trigger points and my hemmoroids) from time to time, but it's nothing to worry about. you have to remember that you have been contracting these muscles in a constant state for years and years - they are terribly tight, contracted, knotted up, and dysfunctional. you have to trust, and allow for the healing time, and continue to treat the tender areas, all combined with the relaxation.
of course I speak from my own experience only, following the teachings of AHIP and Clair Davies' book and my own intuitive sense. I am not a doctor.
i write to encourage you all to continue down the AHIP path, and to continue to learn how to treat yourself. You are on the right track and are going to get better and better......

Boudreaux, your post, along with a mail from David Wise in which explained me that my symptoms are quite common, is making my day :-D

yes common sounding to me. I have these, and have worked many out. My sphincter was terribly tight when I began. I am in the process of treating it almost daily. I do give it a rest though when it feels very soar, not tight, but soar like a muscle ache from lifting or running.

PM me if you have specific questions.
Age:29 | Onset Age: 25.5 | Symptoms: Initially burning in prostate/perineum, burning in urethra, uncontrollable muscle contraction before urinating, dual ache in groin, left testicle pain, feeling of golf ball in rectum, soarness in rectum, and muscle spasms, now mainly very mild urinary tract inflammation, burning mildly after ejaculation, some days after physical activity involuntary mild muscle contraction before urinating | Helped By: .5 mg of Ativan, Aleve (naproxen), quercetin, alcohol in large quantities (vodka and soda), stretching, walking, internal massage the perineum area and levators. | Worsened By: sitting, weightraining, jogging, coffee, caffeine in general, alcohol bothered me at first, overdoing sex
