Chronic pain and flare ups

Post by gil_galad »

Hello!

I was wandering about the pain every one has and the flare ups.
In my case I have a 24h/7d pain about 6 out of 10 and what I call a flare is
the increase of pain to 9 out of 10

Can you share your experience?

That's how it was for me in the beginning (before starting the SP). Now, my normal pain level is a 2, and my flare-ups are a 5.
This is NOT medical advice. I am NOT a doctor.

Age: 43 CPPS: 10+ Yrs Recovery Status: 80-85% Symptoms: Pain in testicles, scrotum, rectum, prostate, perineum Makes Worse: Anxiety, Tension, too much Nookie Makes Better: Stretching, Abdominal Massage (Go Theracane!), Relaxation

I went through this stage of pain for several month last year until I found out about Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol.
At first I read AHIP book , learned and apply ( October 2005) SP from the book. It helped me a little therefore in January I attend the clinic.
Now my worst days are like my best during my worst time.
I do a lot of stretching , average 2 relaxation session per day and a lot of minute to minute muscle relaxation.
I have now more and more days with only discomfort and periods during good days with no symptoms. The only thing that is still with me is a little pain penis during urination !
The sooner you start the easier and faster you get out from this . It will be easier for you to recognize and control your muscle tension when you start quickly !
Go for SP !!!

good luck !!
I suffer from CPPS since end of 2004. Pubic bone pain, penis mainly its tip , perineum pain, urinate frequency, pain after urination and sometimes after defecate. I am on SP since October 2005 after reading AHIP book. Attend SP clinic in January 2005. Getting better every month!!!

How to understand the mentioned pain scale? It is very subjective. Are there any explanations available?
Say, what is 10? Does it fell like cutting off finger with a knife or something milder? What is 9 then?

I would say 10 is being burned alive.

Gil Galad, where would you put a typical headache on your scale?

This is not medical advice, and I am NOT a doctor of medicine or a related field.
* Age:33 Onset: February 2004.
* 99.9% IMPROVEMENT in 2.5 Years with the first year being the really hard part
* Current Symptoms: Mild irritation of perineal muscles on occasion. Relieved for days at a time by a specific stretch (see below).
* Initial Symptoms: Terrible penile, urethral, rectal, and perineal burning/aching with addition afferent sensations.
* Current Treatments: Deep stretching of the legs and pelvis. Most effective: Deep psoas and levitar ani stretch using the first phase of the "pigeon pose" from Yoga. When a deep pulling is felt in the middle of the pelvis next to the upper rectum, symptoms are completely alleviated for several days.
* Past Treatments Hyperprotection of the perineum for 1.7 years, Walking, Rectal biofeedback, Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, Conditioned deep relaxation practice, Men's Multi-Vitamin and an Extra B-complex pill, all seemed to help.

Pain is no longer a bit factor for me. But during the first year it was 24/7 anywhere between 6-9/10 (occasionally 10/10 which made me do suicidal stuff).
Nowadays when it flares up it is a 4/10. Urethral pain and fireball in perineum mostly. Urethral pain controlled by Pyridium, fireball controlled by internal trigger point therapy.

But what bothers me has been the discomfort (for example, urgency). During the first two years it had been 6-8/10. Nowadays a flare up make it 6/10. I usually have good medications ready to reduce the discomfort level right away when it started. Urgency and bladder irritation controlled by Valium.

It has been almost half a year since I had to resort to use painkillers, but then my pain tolerance had gone up since I have CPPS, so I no longer rely on painkillers as much.
Age:37 | Onset Age: 34 | Symptoms: Pain on Right Leg, Fireball, Urethral and Testicular Pain, Urgency, Bladder lost control, Lower and Upper abdominal Pain, Perineum Pain, Nausea, ED, Pain during arousal, Ejaculation Pain, Lower Back Pain , Fatigue, Short term memory loss, anxiety, bowel pseudo-obstruction/IBS, bloating, unable to pass gas, intestinal burning sensations. | Helped By: Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, Elavil, Valium, Stretching, Skin Rolls, Donut Cushion, External Trigger point | Worsened By: Sit for more than an hour, Caffiene, Sex, Bowel movement, Symptoms come without warning.

Say, what is 10?
This is different for each person. A "10", in my opinion, is the most pain you can tolerate, period. If you are in agonizing pain, and must take pain killers, than THAT is a 10 to you. To someone else, it may be a 6, but it doesn't matter. Agonizing pain is agonizing no matter whether you are a pain guru or have no pain tolerance at all. Whatever your max is, that's a 10.

I fortunately have 1 or 2 headaches a year (my believe for that is that I take out all my tension in the perineum), and when I have one is about 4 on the scale.

It is not a good idea to compare pelvis pain with occasionally headaches due to psychological reason. For example I can tolerate short period of pain ( when I'm sure that it will be gone within few hours or few days like a headache) much better than chronic pelvic pain which I do not know how long it will stay with me !!!

When I had 10 I had to go to the hospital for a shot , I could not sleep and pain pills didn't do the job, It was a night mare !!

Now I'm at level 1-2 or I have no symptoms at all for several hours per day.
Last flare I had in the first two weeks of February put me back to a level 3-4.
