Is DL-Phenylalinine (DLPA) safe with these?

Post by LifeInTurmoil »

Does anyone know if DL-Phenylalanine (DLPA) is safe to take with Tramadol and Uroxatral? My doctors never heard of DLPA. One pharmacist told me that there should be no problem taking the three together, but I am still hesitant about adding DLPA to my Tramadol and Uroxatral especially since Tramadol acts on certain brain components like DLPA does and taking certain "over the counter" supplements like St. John's Wort with Uroxatral can seriously damage your liver. I would really like to try the DLPA since I have heard that it can help people with chronic pain like we have and also with depression. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated as 2 years of constant pelvic pain is driving me to insanity!!!! Thanks guys and God bless!

P.S. If anyone knows of a good general practioner or pain clinic/doctor in New York City or Westchester who sympathizes with our condition please let me know as I have been turned away by MANY when they hear I have chronic pelvic pain. I have already tried some physical therapy for 4 months, but it only helped slightly. The best PT places in New York City are not fully covered by my insurance and I cannot afford them so I am VERY desperate these days.

DL-Phenylalanine contains phenylalanine, which is part of the composition of aspartame (Nutrasweet), a common sweetener found in prepared foods (particularly soft drinks, and gum). I cannot eat Phenylalanine even though I do not have the genetic disorder phenylketonuria (inability to metabolize phenylalanine). I get nasty side-effects, vague but unmistakeable. So I'd be careful if I were you. See http://www.dorway.com/ and many other websites.

I don't see how it can help with depression, since Phenylalanine uses the same active transport channel as tryptophan to cross the blood-brain barrier, and in large quantities interferes with the production of serotonin.

Thanks Webslave. How long did you take the DLPA for before you started to notice side effects? Did it help at all with your pain?

I didn't take DLPA, simply noticed side-effects from Nutrasweet.

You should try other things for pain relief or depression relief before you try DLPA, in my opinion.

I live in White Plains and work in Nyc and I think I have delt with a practitioner in westchester who is sincere. As I am feeling well now if you have any questions just message or call. It would be helpful to all if you would fill out your banner info so people know what you are experiencing.
"Turmoil" is a rough way to describe life.

Be well Robert
