Cigarette smoke is a common trigger for some. Even inhaling a lot of secondhand smoke can worsen my symptoms.

I've been wondering about tobacco in general. In sweden we have a form of tobacco called snuff which is widely used. Its a little bag filled with tobacco that you put under your lip.
I quit that about 4 months ago but havent felt the slightest relief so I'm thinking about starting again since I'm eating candy like crazy :-|
So in my case tobacco doesnt seem to trigger my pain, might be different with smoking though.

For me, very often smoking triggers episodes of IBS. Since many believe that there is a connection between IBS and CPPS, smoking may be causing flare-ups of the latter in my case as well. I really should just quit the bad habit and see what it does. The emotional stress chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome causes does not make it easy.

smoking and symptoms

Post by moonrock »

I think the main problem with smoking is that it weakens blood-flow, and it closes down the smallest blood-vanes (don't know what you call them). If you want tissue and muscles to have a good environment you need to give them enough blood/oxygen. This is especially important for the body to heal. That's why people often aren't allowed to smoke after operations.

However, I am a smoker, and when I have had periods without smoking, my symptoms have remained about the same. But a PT that once treated me refused if I didn't quit because of the terrible effect it had on blood-flow. He actually saw no point in treating me if I didn't quit. Needless to say, I started up again after the two months of treatment"¦

There is a chemical in cigarettes that make the bowel start moving. I have IBS, and many different doctors have told me this. I think most smokers notice this effect when taking the first smoke of the morning"¦

What about cannabis? It's well-known as a pain relieving drug.

Althrough smoking tobacco is not a trigger for me, cannabis was a MAJOR one. Since I completly stopped smoking pot, my symptoms have improved. I still have some problems, but most of my days are pain free. The only trouble left is pain during and after sex (along with PE), with the occasional flare-ups.
Avoid cannabis like plague, it's the single most clear and potent trigger for me.
Age: 31 Location: France Symptoms: right epididymis pain, testicular soreness and pain, pain after ejaculation, gulf ball in rectum (now gone), pain at tip of penis (now gone), bent penis when in pain (not Peyronie's), burning after ejaculation, weird right testicular positions, big and painful lymph nodes (now gone). Makes worse: sex, tiredness, anxiety, cold Makes better: hot climate, stretches.

There is actually an active cannabinoid receptor in the human prostate gland. Have a look at this interesting thread on the topic of chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and cannabis: viewtopic.php?t=316

I also am a smoker, but not heavy. I go through usually 2 packs, sometimes 3, a week. And I've smoked steadily since I was 17 and never had these problems during that period so I can't really see a connection personally.

Alcohol also seems to have no effect on me.
Age:23 | Onset Age:22 | Symptoms:Urinary hesitancy, moderate frequency, urgency and retention, slight perinneum, rectal and leg pain, frequent abdominal/bladder pain. Red/white spotty irritation on penis | Helped By:hot baths or showers, walking and moving around, pain medications | Worsened By: sitting for a long time, holding urine too long. I'd say I'm about 75% better naturally so far.

I had the same experience. cigarettes are OK, but hash gave me the worst flare-up ever... maybe this also has something to do with it's effect on anxciety or some kind of mental stuff? My IBS also flared up...

For me alcohol also is a trigger, but often I felt better the day after heavy drinking...strange...
