Paradoxical Relaxation Strategies Anyone?

Post by timberdoodle »

It seems like many of our posts deal with physical therapy, and I know from my reading in AHIP that Wise believes paradoxical relaxation is a key component to full recovery. Assuming that not all of us have access to the Wise tapes, would anyone be willing to share what tapes or other strategies they employ for this component of the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol? Thanks...

sharp stabbing pain

Post by inflamed »

I have this book, which is advised at the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, it shows how to treat trigger points and also has a section on paradoxical relaxation.

I tend to vary my paradoxical relaxation I find this to be the most effective. example doing it the DWises way (tapes), or maybe doing it the way in the above workbook, or a combination of both. I would definitely encourage paradoxical breathing or simply following the feeling or even the sound of your breath at the start of a session for at least 10 mins.

One problem I tend to have is staying away from my pelvic floor during p relaxation but I guess this is a common problem.

Right now at the point were I completely let go of my pelvic floor I get a sharp stabbing like feeling in the prostate area and occasionally at the end of my urethra and then I am completely relaxed. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

This is also a good post to read

The idea is to focus on a muscle group in the body and discontinue any effort that easily lets go. After doing this you feel the tension that remains. And then again let go of any effort that easily lets go.

Sounds easy, but there are many pitfalls.

Typically, most people sit there stuck in the tension and get a sense of frustration that NOTHING lets go. And then they start efforting to get rid of the tension that they feel. Most can feel the tension. You can't force this tension to go away, you must accept it and not fight with it. Letting go of tension is not pushing it away, or running away from it. You must accept it's existence within you, and that it is not an enemy. Rest with it. You don't have to do anything. The less you do, the better.

Feel the tension, and feel yourself doing the tension.

Thanks for the replies so far; does anyone have experience using Dr. Wise's tapes, and if so, could you describe the general content? Are they meditation tapes with music? Do they contain verbal instructions to help you accept the tension? How do they differ from some of the CDs recommended in prior posts? Thanks again...

I have the dr.wise tapes, but does anyone have them on CD or mp3? Why does he use tapes!!?!!

to timberdoodle:
the wise tapes are about accepting tension, and relaxing different areas of your body, a sort of meditation. He has verbal instructions to help you focus on what you should be doing, so that you don't lose focus on relaxing and focusing. after a while this should help release your tension and help you notice how your body is reacting. it's a way of gaining control of your body, and learing to relax fully. Maybe my explenation is rubbish...don't know..?

To prevent people distributing them easily is my guess.
