Triggerpoints

Post by Pelican »

Hi

I thank you all for this forum. I've found new hope here!
Some of you seem to know a lot about triggerpoints and I just wanted to ask you some questions. I'm getting my Theracane by the end of this week so I just need some pointers.

1. When it comes to the sexual dysfunction are there any specific triggerpoints that usually causes these problems and if so what are their locations and how do I work on them?

2. I've ordered the triggerpoint therapy workbook along with the relaxation handbook and some relaxation cds. Is it from the triggerpoint workbook you find your triggerpoints or how do you find them. Do you work through the whole areas like inch by inch or do you just look for the typical ones.

3. Ok, last question. I dont get that streaming feeling downwards to my pelvis when the PTs I've visited put pressure on the triggerpoints, theyre really sore but the pain is local. Is this important? I mean if the triggerpoint doesnt stream down or reproduce symptoms can it still be related to the CPPS?

Thanks

I'm just going to tackle #3. The answer is yes, even low-pain spots can be related to CPPS. chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome isn't caused by just trigger points; it's also affected by tightened muscles (reducing blood flow but not necessarily causing pain). And some areas are ancillary to the real painful areas, and so working on them helps anyway. As I've said before, sometimes you have to break through outer muscle tissue to get to sore spots as well.

Today I got my Theracane!

I tried to find some triggerpoints in the abdomen and found lots of sore spots, not sure if those were triggerpoints?
I did find one spot deep in the lower left abdomen that sent pain to my left groin, it felt like the groin tightened when I pushed this little area.
Has anyone had the same experience?

Sore spots are sore spots. They are still worth working out. I suggest turning the lights off, doing some stretching and relaxation, and then slowly working on your abdomen. You might also have good luck working on it in the bath. But until you learn your way around, you just have to experiment.

I've been experimenting with the Theracane and believe that I'm getting somewhere.
I've found especially two points, one thats just above the bellybutton and little to the left and one on the side of my lower abdomen. When pressing these it shoots pain to my lower stomach/bladder. The pulse really gets going as well so the Theracane starts to move with the pulse and I feel blood pumping. The lower one also sends pain to my bladder region, where I feel most pain. I've also found two points on either side of my lower abdomen and when pressin these it really feels like the groin contracts and tenses, its a little painful but not really that bad.
The thing is although I hold the tp for 60-90 secs the pain doesnt go away. And if I rest a couple of minutes and start again its like it was right when I started. Is this really normal?
The pain is also worse than it was before I started and I dont feel relief from using my cane yet, I hope that will come with time.

when you describe being able to feel your pulse you are probably pressing on an artery, this, as far as I have been told by my PT, is not a good thing. When you feel the pulse strongely move a bit to one side or the other.

We've had a thread or two discussing the fact that many of us have abdominal trigger points that don't seem to go away. I don't think this is uncommon, and I can't say what it means. Some people have suggested getting acupuncture or dry needling the trigger points there; I haven't done this, but perhaps it would help.

Like you, I can recreate almost all of my pain symptoms by pressing on these various abdominal trigger points, yet I can't get rid of them. I can say, however, that my pain has gotten better since I've started working on them with my Theracane. It's just that I have to keep treating them endlessly. I don't really mind treating them, as long as the pain doesn't come back full force.

I also like to understand abdominal triggerpoints. I sure have them but I am a little afraid of pushing them since there is so much in there. Organs, Aorta etc. Maybe Scotsman or Webslave could get some information on this from either Bill Taylor or David Wise. This is important since we do not want people to hurt themselves while selftreating.

I started a similar thread recently on abdonimal trigger points that never seem to disappear. It might be helpful to you as well--

I'm seeing Bill next week (first time in 7 months) and will ask him.

Scotsman

I've actually contacted Bill and hope that he can see me sometime in August. Hopefully Ill have the time to stay for maybe 3-4 treatments.
Has it helped you much and have you learned to self-treat yor TPs?
Its a shame that so very few few people know about this condition, treatment should be available in more places than USA and Scotland. Thats the only ones I've heard of so far...

The worst part is that I havent even been diagnosed with anything yet, I've diagnosed myself with the help of the AHIP book which has helped me more than all the different urologist and PTs I've visited.

I've learnt to self-treat and my wife has also been shown. I probably do internal triggerpoint work twice a week and daily externally.

I've really only got one trouble spot left (whilst at the start my whole pelvic floor was full of triggerpoints) - but it's proving hard to shift. I'm really doing all that triggerpoint work with only a very small improvement every month - but I do feel it's an improvement. For me, the big part of my treatment I'm not really doing very well with is the relaxation. With a 16 week old baby finding the time is proving tricky. I really must get back into it though.

Bill really is very good and has exactly the right attitude for treating chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome sufferers.

I wouldn`t mind a trip to see Bill either. Afterall, it`s a bit cheaper than flying all the way to the states. Learning how to treat the muscles internally would be great, as I am quite flexible and have no problem sticking fingers up there.

I personally think it`s a matter of time before we get more qualified PTs out there. This treatment option is gaining acceptance and I would think a lot of therapists see this is as a great opportunity.

Hey Pelican, maybe we should get a hold of some good PTs, have them trained in internal myofascial TP release and set up a Scanidinavian clinic in Stockholm or Oslo ;) Working with this and helping others who suffer- I couldn`t think of a more satisfying job..

I have seen Bill. The guy is just amazing. I would go there as soon as possible. It is worth every "krona". In my view he is better than the people in the US. I have seen them too.

I heard the other day that at "Karolinska Sjukhuset" in Stockholm" they have started a PT (internal and external) treatment plan. Might be worth looking into. It is being administrated through "Uroterapienheten"

Sorry for the local information on this guys, just trying to help :)

Thanks for the feedback Paso. Interesting to hear about "Karolinska" as well. From what I know, this hospital has a great repuation and is at the forefront of many medical fields.

Please keep us informed if you hear anything more about the program. Being a Swede, I assume you will follow this with great interest.
