When you use your Theracane, are you following any pre-defined routines or just using it where it seems to work best? I'm thinking of picking one up and would like to be able to use it on the perineum but I would want to know I'm doing it correctly.
If any of the Theracane massages you find helpful are available as diagrams online, please do point them out.

Re: Question for Mike
I bought my Theracane via ebay and it came with an instructional DVD which was handy (very fast delivery as well to the UK. The vendor on ebay was isaiah54-2). Even with the postage the exchange rate is so good the whole thing works out around £32.Gabriel wrote:If any of the Theracane massages you find helpful are available as diagrams online, please do point them out.

I actually went over diagrams of the musculature with my PT so I would kind of know what to expect. You can find these types of diagrams online. This link has been posted here before, and is helpful: http://www.med.uottawa.ca/medweb/demo_s ... _lec02.htm.
I think the most important thing I learned from both the above link and from my PT was that there are very few ways to seriously harm yourself with your Theracane, as long as you aren't trying to puncture a hole in your bladder. For the most part, my self-treatment has been at my own pace. I also used my experiences in PT to guide the force and duration of my Theracane sessions, although I have modified and/or strengthened this over time as I felt appropriate.
For the abdominals, I just methodically move from one side to the next, one inch at a time, then lower, then back across (like a typewriter), press, hold, and move. Sometimes I hold longer, sometimes I move the Theracane around to get a really sore spot a little more accurately. But it isn't rocket science. The abdominal wall is covered by muscles, so it's pretty well protected. And even when I've overdone it, I've experienced soreness the next day, and that's about it.
For the perineum, I had to be more careful. There are more sensitive areas there. The one spot I start with is right above the anus (about 1/2" - 1"). At this point (see the diagrams in the link above), a handful of muscles all come together. This is a very common spot for pain during arousal and ejaculation. I press with the Theracane on this spot and hold it, and go in as hard as I can take it. A little further "north", you start running into pubic bones, so the pressure can't be nearly as hard. But it does allow you to dig into muscles better. I next go left or right of the spot mentioned above, and push and hold there. Then I work my way around the anus on both sides and really push hard into the muscles (you have to figure out how to hit the muscle without putting too much pressure on the bones). The muscles around the anus are connected to the muscles in the pelvic floor, so they are good targets.
So that's about it for my Theracane use (other than for back and shoulder work which is mostly unrelated to my CPPS). It's mostly self-guided (I never received a DVD), and a lot of common sense. The diagrams will give you some confidence. The best recommendation is to take it slow at first, and see how it goes.

For the perineum, I used the tip of the curved end. And I do this lying on my back, in bed, legs slightly apart, or in the bath, similar position.
