prostatitis?? Symptoms?

Post by scott500 »

I have been having pain that seems to be in the urethra in the middle of the penis. Sometimes the pain is a feeling of having to urinate. This has been going on for two months now. Sometimes the urine stream is thin and sprays but other times if I wait long enough before I go it is ok.
I went to the doctor and he did a DRE and had a catscan that did not show anything. No blood in urine and no infections. He said the prostate may be just a little swolen.
So far they put me on Levaquin and now on Cipro. They also gave me Elavil 10mg a day.
The doctor says this is chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome but this is the only symptom I have. No pain anywhere else just in the penis which seems to be better in the mornings and then gets worse as the day goes on. When I urinate it makes it feel better just for a minute.
Is this CPPS? Should I have more tests done? The pain never really lets up at all over these past months.

I would appreciate any help on this.

Well, you need to have had symptoms a few months longer before it can be classed as chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome or PM (Pelvic Myoneuropathy), but it sounds like you are on the road there for sure. Pain in the penis does not actually originate in the penis but higher up, in the prostate/bladder area and surrounding muscles. It can be as a result of inflammation in the prostate caused usually by a neuromuscular pelvic condition that can be treated by a special kind of muscle manipulation (trigger point release), psychological measures (conscious, continuous relaxation of the pelvic muscles), attention to dietary triggers (for some men), avoidance of stress, treatment for anxiety (are you a sufferer of anxiety), and more.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

I am under some stress and have some anxiety which I told my Urologist but he did not prescribe anything for that. I guess they don't like to give out xanex or valium. He wants to do a Cystoscope but he does not believe he will find anything. I am not sure I want to do that if I don't have to.
When this first started I had some testical pain for a day or two then that went away and came on the other symptom in the penis having the feeling to urinate all the time. Now it is more a tingle in there. Sometimes a pain depending on the time of day.

Thanks for you input on this.

I agree with Webslave. You should do some reading on this site and see what chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome is all about. A lot of chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome symptoms are painful, and others, such as reduced urine stream and weak erection, are not. But perhaps you can catch it early and fend off the worst of the symptoms.

I was at the hospital today for some more tests. They really never heard of chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome but the emergency room doc looked it up real quick and told me to take some anti-inflamitories. He said I should really get a Cystoscope done even though all tests show negative.
Should I do this? I don't want to make things worse. The anti-inflamatories and the Tylonol with Codine seem to be helping.
Still the only pain or discomfort is in the penis. Today it is only the head of the penis.

Strange?

Gold standard of care in the nation's hospitals! :58_83:

The famous "covering of the backside" line.

I wouldn't, but I'm not a doctor, so don't listen to me.

This is just my humble opinion and not medical advice.....a cystoscope is not really needed in my opinion. You said you had a CT, I would assume they scanned your abdomen and pelvic area, and that is was with and without contrast. That will normally tell the tale as to what you have. I would see a urologist.....

I went to the Urologist today and he gave me Uroxatral (alpha-blocker). Has anyone had experience with this drug? I had Detropan XL before and did not like the side effects plus it did not help at all.

Uroxatral seems to be helping. I would say most of the pain is gone and urinary flow is much better.

You can still tell there is something not quite right though. How do I get rid of the rest of this? Does Uroxatral take awhile to work? Since Uroxatral is working I am guessing this is musculear then?

What it suggests to me is that you probably have an inflamed or enlarged prostate gland. Use the search function above to find out more about this drug. Also see: http://www.sanofi-synthelabo.us/product ... atral.html

The symptom that is bothering me now is this constant feeling of having to urinate. It is not real strong but it is there. After urination I feel better for maybe 5 minutes and then it comes back.
At the end of urination if I try to get more out I feel a little sting at the tip of the urethra.

Most of the pain in the penis is gone from the help of Uroxatrol.

anyone else have just this symptom? Could this still be CPPS?

I tend to think it is CPPS. Most of my symptoms have gone, except I still do get the occasional burning at the tip of the penis. It is annoying, and I can also feel the muscles moving, so to speak. This seems to be very common.

frequency

Post by darwin »

In my 1+ year of this, I had the frequency problem for about month 3 to 6. This syptom faded and has not reemerged in months.
I suggest that you pee more often, and whenever possible, sit down to do so. By sitting down as if I'm going #2, I can relax and more fully empty my bladder. This seemed to have helped a lot. A couple of years ago, I was in the car on a trip and had to pee, but waited to long, and it caused a lot of bladder pain. That pain, though milder is the feeling I would get. By peeing more often, and ensuring I am really empty, that lingering pain slowly disappeared. This may involve going again 15 minutes after you just went. Don't worry, that's not abnormal.

Also:
Make sure you are drinking plenty of water (pop does not count), it flushes your system.
Make sure you are empty before bed. Going to bed with a full bladder is the only thing that brings that feeling back for me.
