i was diagnosed with prostatitis about a month ago after a visit to the urologist. I noticed symptoms a couple weeks before that at night, after masturbation. right afterward, I noticed a tingling sensation and then a lot of pressure, with intese urge to ejaculate again. after the second time, it felt a bit weird coming out. the next morning I began to notice some dysuria...also some pain in the tip of my penis while erect.
first I went to a normal doc who tried antibiotics for urethritis, which didn't help, even with minimizing sexual activity to basically none. then I went the the urologist who gave me levaquin for 4 weeks for prostatitis. the first 2 weeks only helped a little, so I began taking saw palmetto in addition. that made things a lot better, and I was on my way back to normal, when I had a set back at the end of my levaquin treatment. I noticed dysuria again...sore bladder feeling, inability to pee much, leakage afterwards, dull pain feeling in my sac. after a follow up visit, he gave me uroxatral, which seemed to help as well after the set back.
so another week into uroxatral and saw palmetto, urination is OK, sexual function seems a lot better...i had limited sexual contact and then some masturbation, but more frequent than usual as I had abstained for a while due to my symptoms. during the last time I masturbated, I noticed a slight twinge of pain that I felt originally. later that night and the rest of this week, my dysuria has come back fairly hard. the last couple of days it has been really hard to urinate and my bladder feels full a lot. I am drinking cranberry juice a lot, and this afternoon seems to have been better on me.
i am just wondering if due to my history, it could be that somehow masturbation is bringing on these symptoms. that is when I noticed them the first time, and when they have come back it has been due to them. I am pretty much abstaining from all sexual contact for a while to see if I progress at all, I just dont want to think I may have harmed myself permanently. anyone ever hear of similar situations?
my history...prostatitis?

If you have trigger points and tense pelvic muscles, long periods of masturbation can exacerbate your pain. Whether it caused your condition is debatable, but in reality is not really relevant because however you got here, you are here. Many of us have developed chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome due to stress, anxiety, masturbation, injuries, etc... But the important thing to think about now is not HOW you got here, but how you are going to get better.
Your last month follows the typical waxing and waning pattern of CPPS. Flareups last for 2-4 weeks, sometimes more, sometimes less, and this waxing and waning can make anything you are doing at the time seem like the culprit OR the cure. Were you in a typical waning period when taking antibiotics? Who knows. Antibiotics sometimes have anti-inflammatory properties too.
One of the worst properties of painkillers early on is that they mask symptoms, allowing us to ignore the cause of our pain and continue to pack it on. Eventually, the pain killer can't keep up and the situation is now worsened. Pain killers are fine to get you by, but you want to be taking advantage of this less painful time and take steps to get better - i.e. massage, stretching, relaxation. Not doing any of these just allows your condition to get worse, even if you don't know it.

And read a lot of posts. Your symptoms are typical, and so you will find many helpful posts in the forums.

thanks for the reply. it is definitely good to know there are others out there to talk about this with...although I wish no one had to deal with it. I think I'm fairly similar to a lot of people i've read about in that I'm in my 20's, very healthy and active and didn't see anything like this coming. I don't feel like I should ever be concerned about whether or not I should have sex due to some "condition." i've also heard that alcohol can irritate these symptoms too, and I don't want to feel like I need to stay in and not enjoy the weekend because of this. although, there have been a couple times where I couldn't pee at all unless I had some beer to help get it through. I just want to be able to live normally like anyone else.
my condition has improved over the last couple of days. I did have some set backs while on antibiotics, which made me think they didn't help much...even though I did see a significant decrease of symptoms after being on them for a few weeks. my body also tends to react bad during the change of seasons/weather and it takes a few weeks to settle into dealing with change like that...so I'm hoping that some time, relaxation and just general awareness about it will help out some.

The best thing you can do for your state of mind is to start doing something to help yourself. I spent a long time letting this condition take hold of me, and I was depressed, angry, upset, lonely, you name it. I experienced a huge lift emotionally once I started stretching, getting therapy, doing self massage, and doing some relaxation. So that's what I'd focus on now. Hopefully you'll experience relief sooner than later.
