PT Question

Post by treynor33 »

I've been to a PT twice now, who I think really has a good grasp on the pelvic floor problems. The first time she worked around my bladder and it never caused me any pain at the time or later. The second time she said she found something more in my right kidney area right below my lung. She said she was "mobilizing" it and that it could be a good reason why my pelvic floor is struggling. She also told me I could have some pain that area for a few days. I did have some minor pain the next day.

Two days later I felt heavy pressure under my ribcage/lungs when sitting. It wasn't really painful but very uncomfortable. That pressure remained for about 3 days. Yesterday afternoon the pressure became pain, and radiated to my back. It was nearly pass-out type pain for about an hour. After work, I laid down and it settled down after about 2 hours. Today the same thing is starting to happen.

I called her and she said that it is more than likely a good sign and that in our next appt on Monday, she was planning on addressing that issue that would provide me relief.

I guess my question is has anyone ever had anything similiar happen or has anyone ever been permanently made worse by anything the PT did? If this doesn't get better soon, I can't continue to work, it is very despressing since it is not improving but getting worse. Appreciate any insights....

It's not uncommon for PT to cause flare ups, especially if it's the first time you've had the therapy. With that said, that doesn't mean your pain is "normal" either. I doubt any massaging of the muscles could cause permanent pain, but you don't want to be in agony either. Perhaps she could go easier in that area the next time.

It's important to trust your PT. Recovery from chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome is as painful as the condition itself. If you don't trust your PT, find another one you DO trust. You'll need to rely on them to get you through the flare ups and tell you it's all normal.

Thanks for the input , I was just scared, it was a bad couple of days but has gotten a little better. I do trust her. I read this site and know flares can happen but until it happens to you, you just don't understand I guess. I had never had pain in the flanks or the back before she did that.

The most amazing thing about it is that below the waist it has gotten much better. Its like the pain has migrated north. I only pee about 8-12 times a day since my first visit, instead of 20-30 times a day (for 9 months). And my flow is better. I feel perenial pain only about twice a week. I used to always feel pain betwen the scrotum and the anus after 4:00 and some days all day. Now it is very minimal.

I also realized that some of the pressure I was feeling below the lungs when sittting and in the one spot left of the back I have felt for years at times, I just never thought it was associated.

I also started Wobezym and Serraptate 5X3 twice a day about a week ago, we'll see if the combinaton will get me somewhere.

Well, it sounds as though you've seen some improvements. That will hopefully be a good sign that you are on the right track. As far as the pain moving, I see it like this: Your muscles are composed of bands of muscle fibers, and you have layers of separate muscles on top of each other. I look at it like a carnival tent. You cut the tension from one line from the tent by releasing the trigger point, and then the tension in the muscles "moves" due to different stresses. Also, as you release trigger points, you uncover "deeper" ones that were hidden behind the first group of taut muscles. So PT will constantly be changing, and your pain may move around until you get "everything".

Well I went back to see her for my regular appt on Monday, to hopefully address that flank problem. However 48 hours later things are worse. My upper back is now fully involved. Now my lower back on the left side is in pain, my front flanks and lower sides constatnly hurt on both sides (much worse as the day of sitting goes on) and my upper back really gets going as the day progresses. It does settle down quite well at night so I can sleep. If I set way back in my chair I also get relief.

She said I should have felt relief in a day or so and possibly within hours. This is getting crazy. I don't even think about my chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome problem below my waist anymore (which ironically is better), cause this other pain has taken over my life. I know as she moves things around my body is changing but this is getting to the point where I can't work.

We haven't really even worked on my trigger points below my waist, she feels there are issues in the upper muscular structure that are affecting my pelvic muscles. She also does not want me stretching my flanks or back. Anyboyd else ever deal with such a situation or PT? She seems very knowledgeable and confident and I don't have the option of seeing another PT, freakin insurance issue.
