Suggestions for mind/brain trouble?
Suggestions for mind/brain trouble?
I think at this point I may be on the right track w/ stretching and supplements, but the major thing holding me back is my mind (in more ways than one) I'm not sure what it is, how to treat it or who to see. Problem one is I have this brain fog feeling almost all the time, I'm very tired and feel like I can't think straight, my eyes are even a little blurred when I look at this screen. I had this years ago every so often for a day or two but it seemed to have gone away. I am taking Effexor right now and I know this could be an effect of this medication but it started a couple days before I started. My dad says he has something very similar but Xanax takes his away, I take Ativan but it doesnt do the trick for me. We both suffer from anxiety in our own way. Does anyone know anything about this?
Number two is I have suffered from this condition for so long that my mind actually makes my problem worse than it actually is. The anxiety, fear and obsession over this problem is worse than the actual pain and discomfort. Even when I'm feeling good I cannot stop thinking about it getting worse, it never leaves my mind. Ever!!! If my mind was clear and not obsessed and fearful I think I could be living close to a normal life at this time. Can those of you who know what I am talking about give me some suggestions on both of these? I'm sure the 2 are related but have no idea what to do for whatever it is.
Thanks

High dose SSRIs are good Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) remedies. Titrate up. Lexapro (40mg/day, but start at 5mg a day) is a good choice. See your doctor.

Thanks Webslave!! Do you think that would help the wierd feelings in my head (feels like I turn my head but my brain turns slower) hard to explain. Or the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)? Would Lexapro be better in your opinion than Effexor? Thanks

I may be wrong but I think that the kind of symptoms you mention are common in the general population at large. brain fog to me is just a catch all for periods of confusion, muggy head, blurrred vision, even dizziness all of which I have suffered with on & off for years. My brother too. If you are a stressed / anxious individual these symptoms are extremely common I think largely due to the flight or fight nervous system response.
I bought a book years ago "Healing you nerves" or something similar by Dr Claire weekes. Her work at helping people recover from nervous exhaustion is very successful. It essentially hinges on accepting all symptoms over many months & not adding to them by stressing about the symptoms themselves hence a viscious cycle. Your nervous system like a broken leg takes a long time to recover. you cannot rush it. and if you have been stressing your nerves out for many years then this fact applies particularly to youreslf & all of us who have had a large amount of cumalative stress in their lives (CPPS obviously is a massive stress causer)!

I have been on Fluoxitine for about 8 months and find it a great help. I use the minimum dose (20mg) and find it helps me keep upbeat without turning me into a zombie.
Takes about three weeks to build up though but worth it once it does.

Could be. Effexor, a SNRI, is used for depression, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. But if it is not doing the job, move on to something else.GARYS wrote:Would Lexapro be better in your opinion than Effexor? Thanks
THE IMPORTANT THING ABOUT SNRIs AND SSRIs IS TO KEEP ROTATING DRUGS UNTIL YOU FIND ONE THAT WORKS. They are strange drugs in that while one will do nothing for you, another may do wonders.
The recommendation I gave you is identical to the prescription a psychiatrist recently prescribed for someone I know with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). SSRIs only combat anxiety at fairly high doses, and depression at lower doses.

Beta blockers are also good for treating Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

Gary... the symptoms you describe (especially regarding your brain not turning as fast as your head) are really interesting to me in that I've also felt similar things going on inside my head at various points in my life that I've described as feeling like my brain is "waffling".. what always made it worse was that I imagined something was horribly wrong with my mind and that in turn only increased the symptoms... I seemed to get the feeling when I was in motion, running or playing a sport and it used to scare the sh-t out of me.... needless to say there wasn't anything organically wrong with my head when I had things checked out, just the old anxiety, tension manifesting itself in yet another peculiar way... I haven't been successful with anti-depressants (I may keep trying because others have had great success finding one that works for them); the meds I've tried have made me feel very foggy, but I have found that meditation and relaxation and talking to a therapist every week have helped a great deal; so I think that the good news for you is that the more you treat your chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome with these methods the more you'll be teaching your head to relax also...
44 years old. Chronic Prostatitis (onset age 38) for 6 years. In the midst of worst flare-up of my life. Tried all conventional methods without success. | Symptoms: Severe burning on tip of penis, burning between rectum and scrotum. Meds: Hytrin, Atavan, percocet (all at night). Natural Meds: Quercitin, Vitamin C and E and B Complex, Niacinimide, Salmon Oil, Garlic supplement, cranberry extract, concentrated liquid chlorophyll. | Helped By: warm baths, stretching, running. | Worsened By: not sure but suspect unhealthy eating, stress, negative thoughts.
The brain fog that comes with my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is pretty intense. Add in pain meds and Xanax, and um I can't remember what I was saying here.
I'm amazed to find there are supplements that help. I always thought supplements were a little weird.
I'm on NADh, coq10, acetyl-l-carnitine, magnesium, b12 sublingual and I'm supposed to take D-ribose with it. It's called the Myhill protocol after Dr Sarah Myhill, a brit who treats CFS. It made a substantial difference right away in concentration, blurred vision, tremors.

For those with feelings of fatigue and brain fog: have you tried a gluten-free diet for a substantial amount of time? I would recommend that.
Started: Spring 2003; high urinary frequency and pain associated with bladder filling; urinary hesitancy; pubic/prostate/perineal discomfort; Helped by: trigger point therapy, Afrin nasal spray, Cymbalta, hydrocodone (small doses), distraction. Makes worse: sex.

Agreed Kevin.
In fact isn't coeliac disease / gluten intolerance directly? I'm on a gluten free diet.
Come of it think of it I'm so bloody tired a lot of the time - I dont like the thought of CFS as well as a component to my heath issues. Oh well such is life!

I stopped eating gluten, dairy, corn, legumes and nightshades and most sugar on 1/4. I haven't eaten out for 6 weeks, I shop at expensive organic stores. On 1/17, my colitis returned with a vengence. Go figure.
I can't say that I've had any other changes at all in this short time on the food plan. I think I actually envy those who see an immediate response of any kind. I'll probably stay off gluten because my wife is, but I'm slowly a few other things back in. I'm losing weight with the colitis already, unfortunately.

Re: Suggestions for mind/brain trouble?
GARYS,
I had the brain fog thing too, as part of some kind of CFS. It disappeared dramatically when I started on Elavil and then switched to Mirtazipine. It hasn't returned.
I can only echo what others have said about Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) treatments. If Efexor isn't doing the trick, then maybe you should speak to your doctor.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I went in Friday and spoke to my doctor. We switched to Lexapro. I took one yesterday after the appointment in the morning and I dont know if it was from working outside in the cold weather, but I had to run in and pee about 5 times in 2 hrs. I really hope this clears my mind up and also helps with the obsession over this problem!!!

I've had symptoms like this too. It was particularly bad a year ago. Most of it is anxiety, true, but the other component that I found helpful was myofascial trigger point release to the muscles of my neck and face. My sternocleidomastoids in particular were (and still are) really tight. I couldn't see straight for months and it felt as if my mind had slowed to a hault. It was almost like having a low-grade migraine for half a year. You might be interested in checking for trigger points that might be contributing to these problems. I know it sounds like kind of a long shot, but its something that might compliment what you're doing already quite well.
That and I stopped eating wheat and dairy.
