UCPPS - Prostatitis, Interstitial Cystitis Forum

I am a 40 year old adult and have had chronic prostatitis for 12 years...started with mountain biking. I recently found out that I have adult adhd, and have been prescribed ritalin a central nervous system stimulant. It seems to cause quite a problem with the pain...perinum area, and causes my temperature to spike to 99.5. I do not have high blood pressure. I was wondering if anyone here is being treated for adhd with a stimulant medication without any problems.

How long have you been taking this stimulant? Do you feel as though it is improving the quality of your life in that you are more focused, etc.? I was prescribed Adderall (similar to Ritalin) for ADD, and I'll discuss my experience with it in my reply to your next post.

I have only taken it a couple of times, and just a small dose 5 milligrams Yes it makes a big difference, much less distractible, and able to stay on task. It quieted my mind down a lot almost felt like a sedative for my mind. Also not as easily frustrated, and in so much of a hurry. The problem is it causes my pain to become worse so I am holding off somewhat until the pain subsides. Believe it or not this flair up started as a result of finding out on my own that I have adhd. Have since had it confirmed by a good p dr. but I knew for certain anyway. I spent two weeks waiting for my appointment...a lot of sitting in front of the computer researching adhd, then a lot of emotional pain and grieving over my life, if only I could have found out 20 years ago. More stress than I have had in years, also the first bad flair up in 7-8 years, am on Cipro for 2 weeks but I do not expect that to help much. I have to learn how to relax and relieve the stress. I didn't know if another stimulant would cause less irritation such as dexedrine, adderall, etc.

Adderall (dextroamphetamine/amphetamine combo) is even stronger than Ritalin. I was taking Adderall for ADD at the time I noticed my first symptoms of CPPS. I believe that my use of stimulant medication was a MAJOR factor that contributed to the development of my CPPS. Ritalin increases the activity of your sympathetic nervous system and probably causes you to clench your pelvic muscles, which causes pain.

what is adult adhd? one thing I suffer from is bad consentration and memory problems and I'm wondering if what you suffer from is in some way related...thanks

Did you give up on treating the add altogether?

bad concentration and short term memory, not able to pay attention. I meet a person and hear their name two minutes later if you asked me the name I would not have a clue. There are a lot of other symptoms. Do a search for adhd and take a simple online test it will give you a good idea if you might have it, or if you should be tested by a professional.

this web site never fails to amaze me. its unelievable how peoples syptoms can mirror each other. its something I suffer very bad from and I honestly believe it has something to do with pros tention and pelvic floor problems. I thought it was my mind switching off after years of stess/ocd etc etc.

I've had to give up on medications, but I still take measures to limit distractions. For example, if I really need to get some work done, I find a place that is completely quiet and where nobody will disturb me.

Anxiety disorders mimic ADHD. Anxiety will definitely affect concentration. Titrate up to high doses of Lexapro (25-40mg) daily and see the inability to concentrate evaporate.

Sorry to bump this old thread but I'm thinking seriously about doing something about my ADD. I'm smart enought to get by on my job for the most part even though I can't concentrate worth a darn but it seems to be getting worse with internet, smartphone, etc...

I got a prescription for addrall but then remember reading something about it on this forum while my chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome was a problem (I'm most in remission for the last year or two). So would Lexapro a better alternative than Addrall?
