UCPPS - Prostatitis, Interstitial Cystitis Forum

Please help with your expertise. Here is my history:

Had unprotected sex with wife who apparantly had a UTI. She was cured on Cipro in one week.

My pain became very intense roughly one week later. Pain was in Penis, testicles, pelvis. Highly exaccerabated by spicy food and beer. Took tetracyclene for thirty days and ran out. Pain became extremely intense within two days of ceasing antibiotic.

Took Cipro for 60 days. Seemed to have less effect as time went on.

Switched to Bactrim for 30 days.

On Levaquin for 45 days with prostatic massage.

All were great when I started but had less effect as time went on. Things were getting pretty good but recently had 6-7 beers and all returned with a vengence.

Symptoms are alternating kidney and pelvic pain, pain in penis to a lesser degree. Split urine streem. Post urination drip. Frequency of urination.

Condition is highly exacerbated by beer which I cannot drink. But Vodka and lemonade seems OK?

Within a very short time of stopping antibiotics, pain/symptoms increase dramatically.

Had PSA, Kidney ultrasound, urines tests negative (as they would be on the antibiotics I am on.)

Any suggestions for diagnosis and or a good SW Florida urologist would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Richie,

I'm not the expert around here, but sounds to me like you have classic chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome symptoms.

The UTI may have been the trigger, but the infection probably resolved around the same time that it did for your wife.

Try to lay off the alcohol completely, it's not helping you.

Please note, that I'm not diagnosing you,....that's for a doctor to do.

I too tried to continue to have my weekend benders while fighting this crap. After about 4 months of it, I finally stopped drinking 2 weeks ago...it has been the best 2 weeks I have had since this stuff came on. It is still there but it is better and more predictable.

Could be other things but I'd at least give it a few weeks without booze and see how it goes...it can't hurt.

Thinking about trying to stop antibiotics again. Any thoughts on if a bug could have survived such an onslaught or am I pretty safe stopping?

Also, why does beer set this thing off? Anything related to yeast, etc?

Any input appreciated since I am completely clueless here.

Have a read through the FAQ and the links from that page for some background and info on CPPS. Sounds like a classic case to me.

Certainly cut out the booze that makes the symptoms worse though.

I'd come off the antibiotics - I'd be stunned if you have any infection.

All this means that you are due. It could have been an UTI, a bee sting, or a little pelvic injury on a motorcycle. Welcome to the club.

The reason why antibiotic seemed to work is that they have anti-inflammatory effects.

If the pain is too intense, have a doctor prescribe you with a few narcotics...then when the narcotics is in effect, try to figure out exactly where it is hurting. Pay special attention to the different groups of pelvic floor and abdominal muscles to see if they are in pain or sore. Have your wife do strechtes of your legs or certain pelvic areas or abdomen to see if it changes any sensations. If it does, the cause is mechanical and you need to start thinking about working on it mechanically (physiologically)..such as the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol. An appointment with a doctor that understands this condition should be able to confirm it easily by checking your pudental nerve and pelvic floor muscles.

Actually that was how I realized that I did not have an infection, but that mine is abaterial.

Personally I started very slowly for almost 6 months with some signs or weird symptoms, until one day I had rigarous and unusual "tantric" sex with my gf and all hell broke loose afterwards... I could not blame it on the sex, because I think I was due...something else would also trigger it sooner or later.

Off the antibiotics since the initial posting with no negative effetcs. Of course the elbow/joint problems created by the Levaquin are another story. I hope this goes away after time.

I have noticed pain in certian deep muscle areas below the belly button extending from one hip accross to the other. Most likely the issue. Also alcohol certainly seems to be a trigger.

Thanks again to all. I am now saving over $600 month in Dr. Fees and antibiotics!

It should subside. I had knee problems for a while from levaquin. I think it took a full year before I had no more effects...but it got much better within a month or so.

I don't think there's anyone who's been on levaquin long-term who doesn't get these side effects, but they make like it's rare.
