Re: Elavil=Miracle Pill
I have been taking this for a while now. I am up to 100mg a day. I still think it helps but it is not a miracle pill. I have not felt the same affect that I felt taking it early on. I sometimes wonder if it is becoming a monkey on my back. I am afraid to get off it, thinking my symptoms will worsen. I have not had hardly any bad experiences with it anymore. I have gained a little weight and have had to fight a serious sweet tooth.
Age: 26 | Onset Age: 20 | Symptoms: Used to be pain around the base of the penis, now I have golf ball in rectum feeling that can be very painful. | Helped By: kegal exercise/biofeedback (fixed ejaculation pain), antiinflamatory drugs, warm baths (intermediate term relief), hamstring stretching (very short term relief), the biggest being stress management | Worsened By: Stress, Standing for long periods, ejaculating used to make it worse, but not anymore

Re: Elavil=Miracle Pill
Hi there,
I don't believe in a miracle pill, but Elavil does help quite a few CPPSers. Weight gain and sweet tooth are common side-effects, with the latter often causing the former! This necessitates watching your diet, but you seem to be well aware of that.
The unfortunate thing about drugs is that tolerance can sometimes develop, and it sounds like you may be dealing with that. This is sometimes confronted by bumping the dose up, but that depends upon how high you can safely go. Another possibility is lowering the dosage or switching drugs for a while, in order to let the body's tolerance reduce. Of course, you absolutely must discuss these options with your doctor before trying them, as weaning off of a drug you've developed a dependency to can present serious challenges.
With regard to getting worse off of the Elavil, I'm afraid I can't offer much wisdom! It's one of those things you'd have to try and see (again, heeding your doctor's guidance). If you do feel noticeably worse, then that's certainly a good indicator that the drug was still helping.

I am not a physician. This is not medical advice. Consult your doctor!

I am thinking about trying out Elavil. What dose should I start with? This will be good because I have trouble sleeping anyway, which I hear it helps with insomnia too.

Re: Elavil=Miracle Pill
In general, don't ask pharmaceutical dosage questions here, because most of us are not doctors and there are liability questions, especially with Elavil (which is one of the world's most popular suicide drugs
).
Get dosages from your medical practitioner. And then start at an even lower dosage by using a pill cutter to section the tablet up. Build up from there (it's called "titrating") until you have a therapeutic response.

Does Elavil help with:
- Having to get up during the night to pee?
- Urge to pee in general, or just that tickling feeling in the penis?

Yes, it can, because it acts on the nerves (inter alia). Elavil (amitriptyline) is a mast cell protector and muscle relaxant, and subdues nerve pain.

Re: Elavil=Miracle Pill
Is it safe to just start taking it in a small dose of 10mg before going to bed, or should it still discuss this with a doctor?

Re: Elavil=Miracle Pill
How did you get some? I would start with a very small dose, say 2mg or 5mg, and build up (titrate) to 10mg over a few weeks.

Where I live, many medicine is freely available over the counter including antibiotics and (if I understand correctly) also Elavil.

Re: Elavil=Miracle Pill
A question for folks who have had success with Elavil, how long did it take until you start seeing results?
I found some user reviews on another website and some folks see improvement within 24 hours but I think that was for IC specifically.
